This work is inscribed in the climate of transition between the last Roman Mannerism and the postulates of clarity, decorum and emotional control promoted by the Catholic Reformation after the Council of Trent. The painting reflects the principles that characterize the school of Scipione Pulzone: a restrained religiosity, of intense idealized beauty, where emotion is expressed through measured gestures, serene faces and a legible composition, intended for devotion and meditation rather than dramatic impact. The neat treatment of the drawing, the elegance of the proportions and the chromatic richness, especially in the contrast between the red of the dress and the greenish blues of the Virgin's mantle, refer to a pictorial language that seeks to reconcile the classicist tradition with the spiritual demands of the new sacred art. In this sense, the work is situated at a key moment in Roman painting, immediately prior to the irruption of Caravaggist naturalism, offering an image of the Virgin marked by grace, introspection and formal nobility. Scipione Pulzone (Gaeta, 1544 - Rome, 1598), known as Il Gaetano, was one of the central figures of Roman painting in the second half of the 16th century. Trained in the milieu of Jacopino del Conte, Pulzone developed a personal style characterized by refined drawing, enameled chromaticism and meticulous attention to finish, which made him one of the most appreciated portraitists of the Roman aristocracy and curia. In his religious production, he rigorously adopted the Tridentine ideals of decorum, narrative clarity and theological correctness, decisively influencing later generations of painters active in Rome. His work represents one of the last great moments of the classicist ideal prior to the naturalistic turn of the Seicento, and his school prolonged these aesthetic values in a sober, elegant and deeply spiritual devotional language, of which this painting is an eloquent testimony.

In einem angedeuteten Innenraum, der durch Bücher und andere, sich nur wenig vom dunklen Hintergrund abhebende Gegenstände spezifiziert wird, zeigt sich die sitzende Mutter Gottes, in der ihr zukommenden Farbtrias gekleidet, auf ihrem Schoß das Christuskind haltend. Neben den sakralen Werken und Altargemälden, wie etwa der „Himmelfahrt Mariens“ in der Kirche San Silvestro al Quirinale in Rom oder einer Kreuzigungsdarstellung in der Santa Maria in Vallicella, trat der Maler hauptsächlich als Portraitist hervor. Bekannt wurde dabei sein Selbstportrait um 1574, vor allem aber auch das Portrait der Maria de Medici oder das Bildnis von Papst Julius III. La sua pittura, caratterizzata da un realismo controllato e da una precisione quasi miniaturistica nei dettagli, riflette l’influenza della ritrattistica fiorentina (e in particolare modo di Bronzino), reinterpretata però in chiave più intimista e spirituale. Pulzone eccelleva nel conferire ai suoi modelli una presenza psicologica intensa ma composta, in perfetta sintonia con l’ideale controriformista di misura e decoro. In questo ritratto, la luce tagliente che accarezza il volto e le mani isola la figura nello spazio, trasformandola in un’immagine di dignità e introspezione morale. Un gentiluomo barbuto, sobriamente abbigliato secondo la moda tardo-cinquecentesca con abito nero e ampio colletto bianco inamidato, è rappresentato a mezza figura, con lo sguardo diretto verso l’osservatore. Tiene un piccolo volume nella mano destra, probabile allusione alla sua cultura o alla devozione religiosa personale. Lo sfondo scuro e neutro esalta la figura e conferisce al ritratto un tono di severa nobiltà. This Dolorosa accompanied by St. John the Evangelist, by Scipione Pulzone, is a masterpiece of devotional painting, an outstanding example of the devotional painting of the Counter-Reformation. Through a sober composition, a masterful use of light and a deep emotional and symbolic content, the artist succeeds in creating an image of immense spiritual power. It is not just a representation of a biblical event, but a visual meditation on pain, faith and sacrifice, designed to move and inspire the viewer to pious contemplation, perfectly fulfilling the artistic and religious ideals of his time. The composition is intimate and concentrated, eliminating any narrative distraction to focus all attention on the emotion of the characters. The figures, depicted half-length, emerge from a dark, neutral background, a feature Pulzone employs to intensify the spiritual connection with the viewer. The Madonna Dolorosa is of an idealized, classical beauty, bathed in a soft light that delicately models her features. Her gaze is low and melancholy, an expression of restrained sadness, dignified and profound. There are no exaggerated tears or uncontrolled gestures; his pain is internalized, inviting pious meditation. His hands, elegantly intertwined, are a focus of attention that reinforces his attitude of resignation and prayer. The expression of anguish of St. John the Evangelist, located to the right of the Virgin, is more explicit. His brow is furrowed and his mouth half-open, looking upward as if in silent lament or supplication. She holds a white cloth, probably to wipe away tears, a gesture that underscores the humanity of her suffering. His presence serves as a counterpoint to Mary's sorrowful serenity. A powerful light source, coming from the left, selectively illuminates the most significant parts of the scene: faces and hands, red tunic and ochre veil, as well as the Instruments of the Passion, in the foreground. Indeed, in the lower right corner, on a stone block or altar, are the Instruments of the Passion: the crown of thorns and the three nails. On the stone block, one can read an inscription in Latin, which the Catholic liturgy applies to the Sorrowful Virgin. Scipione Pulzone was one of the most important painters in Rome at the end of the 16th century, at the height of the Counter-Reformation. His precise and defined drawing is heir to the tradition of Raphael. This is revealed in an extremely polished and enameled pictorial surface finish, where the brushstroke is almost invisible. This gives the figures a sculptural and timeless quality. Also noteworthy is the meticulous attention to detail, visible in the texture of the fabrics, the softness of the skin and the hardness of the thorns. Sicipione Pulzone began his artistic training as a pupil of Jacopino del Conte, although he soon preferred to take personalities such as Girolamo Muziano or Siciolante as references for his art. His taste for descriptive effects led him to study Flemish and Venetian models, from which he extracted a rich palette of colors. However, it was in Raphael where he found his greatest influence reflected in the use of defined contours and schematic clarity. His art recalls above all the earliest Raphael, the one that refers us to the style of a Perugino or a Domenico Ghirlandaio. That is why his art is largely revisionist, since his sources are not to be found in his immediate predecessors, but in the great masters of the late Quattrocento. In 1584 Pulzone traveled to Naples and Florence. In the latter city he came into contact with local artists of a similar sensibility to his own. Pulzone is the archetype of counter-mannerist art. He was primarily a portrait painter and his works submissively followed the dictates of the Roman Church: he tried to transmit simple emotions, within the reach of the simplest of spectators, with a didactic intention and sometimes, with an almost artisanal air, which prioritizes art as a vehicle to transmit an idea, in this case of a religious type, rather than seeking beauty, the artist's showcasing or the assumption of artistic challenges.

I parametri estetici dell'artista scaturirono da una precisa temperie culturale, basti cogliere l'analogia della Madonna in esame con quella di Marcello Venusti (Mazzo di Valtellina, 1510 ; Roma, 1579) custodita al Wellington Museum di Londra (olio su rame, cm 49,5X34,5) che, databile agli anni 1567 ; 1570, era stata assegnata sia pur con prudenza a Lavinia Fontana. Si deve poi evidenziare come il volto della Vergine in esame, sia altresÃ¬ confrontabile con quello della Collezione Borghese e con la Madonna presente nell'Adorazione dei Pastori della Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria, databile alla fine dell'ottavo decennio (Parrilla, p. 70, n. 14). (Gaeta, 1544 circa - Roma, 1598) Ritratto d'uomo Olio su tela, cm 45X39 Scipione Pulzone fu uno dei pittori più importanti della seconda metà del XVI secolo e Raffaele Borghini commentò che fu 'molto eccellente nel fare i ritratti di naturale, e così sono da lui condotti che paion vivi' (cfr. R. Borghini, Il Riposo, Firenze 1584, a cura di M. Rosci, Milano, 1967, p. 578). Durante l'ultima decade del Cinquecento, infatti, Scipione produsse innumerevoli effigi mostrando una tenuta qualitativa assai alta, in modo particolare nella resa dei volti e degli abiti, pur se con esiti convenzionali. La critica recente ha ben colto che le sue opere riflettono l'emergere di una nuova concezione sociale e un'analisi della condizione umana più complessa e consapevole, tanto da suggestionare lo stesso Caravaggio (cfr. A. Zuccari, in Caravaggio e il suo tempo. Museo Nazionale di Capodimonte, catalogo della mostra, Milano, 1985, pp. 170-171).

DER KREUZTRAGENDE CHRISTUS AUF DEM WEG ZUM KALVARIENBERG Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 118,5 x 181,5 cm. Ungerahmt. In Nahsicht der das schwere Kreuz tragende Christus in braunem Gewand, einen Strick um den Hals sowie Dornenkrone auf dem Haupt, die bereits deutliche Blutspuren auf seinem fahlen Gesicht hinterlassen hat. Christus wendet sich mit seinen traurigen dunklen Augen an einen Schergen, der in Rückansicht mit weißem hochgekrempelten Hemd und beiger Weste zu sehen ist und der mit seiner linken Hand das Seil um Christi Hals festhält. Zur Linken Christi, hinter dem Kreuz, ein weiterer Scherge, der soeben mit einem Stock in seiner Hand ausholt, um Christus zu knüppeln. Auf der rechten Bildseite die in Schwarz gekleidete Maria mit nach oben gerichteten gefalteten Händen, die ihre dunklen Augen auf den Schergen und Christus gerichtet hat. Hinter ihr, mit weißem Tuch über dem Haupt, Magdalena und rechts daneben, in rotem Gewand, Johannes. Malerei in überwiegend beige-brauner Farbgebung, wobei die Gesichter besonders erhellt sind und die unterschiedliche Gestik der Hände der Dargestellten betont wird. Scipione Pulzone il Gaetano, ein italienischer Maler des Manierismus, hat das vorliegende Motiv in unterschiedlichen Größen auf seinen Gemälden wiederholt. SCIPIONE PULZONE Il Gaetano 1544 Gaeta - 1598 Roma Cristo camino del Calvario Réplica, posiblemente autógrafa, con variantes del cuadro presentado en la exposición A su imagen como original de Scipione Pulzone (GUTIÉRREZ PASTOR, Ismael (2014): “60- Jesús con la cruz a cuestas camino del Calvario” en el catálogo de la exposición A su imagen. Madrid, Centro Cultural de la Villa Fernán Gómez, 216-217). Asimismo, existe una tercera versión en el comercio italiano (VANNUGLI, Antonio (2012): “La subida al calvario de Scipione Pulzone para Marcantonio Colonna”, Archivo Español de Arte, tomo LXXXV, nº 340, 303-328). Ninguna de las tres versiones es igual entre sí. Bien es verdad que las dos versiones de la exposición A su imagen y ésta que presentamos se parecen pero hay algunas diferencias notables. La primera y más importante es que mientras que en la versión de la exposición detrás de la Verónica y de San Juan hay un soldado más, en la del presente catálogo no existe dicho personaje. Tampoco son iguales los mismos personajes de la Verónica y de San Juan, es decir, el pintor ha utilizado modelos distintos, diferencia que se ve también en el personaje que ayuda a Cristo, Simón el Cirineo. Un cuadro igual o semejante a éste fue encargado a Pulzone hacia 1581-83 por el Cardenal Ascanio Colonna para a su vez regalárselo al secretario de Felipe II, Mateo Vázquez de Leca. Vannugli confirma que existió una segunda réplica para el Cardenal Fernando de’ Medici que también se pensaba enviar a España. El hecho es que si se enviaron finalmente dos versiones a España bien pudiéramos estar ante los dos cuadros que se encontraban en nuestro país: el de la exposición y el que presentamos. Es difícil tener la seguridad de cuántas veces repitió el tema. Lo que sí podemos ver en nuestro lienzo es la calidad que presenta a pesar de los vaivenes del tiempo. Esa calidad se ve en los rostros de los personajes principales: Cristo y la Virgen, o los discípulos y seguidores de Jesús. Pulzone, sin embargo, muestra unos sayones y soldados de rostros grotescos en línea con algunos artistas flamencos como Quentin Metsys o El Bosco. Scipione Pulzone fue uno de los últimos representantes del Tardomanierismo en la ciudad de Roma, arrinconado en las últimas etapas de su vida artística por la revolución del Naturalismo de Caravaggio y la “vuelta la orden” que suponía el Clasicismo de los Carracci. Por tanto, con él se cierra una etapa de la pintura italiana volcada en mostrar de manera precisa las consignas iconográficas de la Contrarreforma, un arte inspirado en las normas emanadas del Concilio de Trento con imágenes sencillas y que sirviesen de inspiración moral a todos los estamentos sociales del mundo católico. 144 x 188 cm Óleo sobre lienzo
