    Florence Putterman (1927-2021) American, "Messenger" Monoprint. Shows an abstract landscape with rolling fields and yellow clouds in the sky. The one-of-a-kind piece is signed in pencil bottom right and titled in pencil bottom left. Held in an ornate frame.  Condition: Frame shows signs of distress.  Overall Size: 17 x 15 in.  Sight Size: 7 1/2 x 6 in.  Florence Putterman was born in Brooklyn, New York on April 14th, 1927 and was drawn to art at an early age, obtaining her Masters of Fine Arts from Pennsylvania State University and becoming an early proponent of allusory and Symbolist abstract art at a time when the field was dominated by men. Settling in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, she constantly reinvented her work throughout her career, working in many mediums including photography, found object collages, acrylics on canvas, and woodcuts,  and received numerous accolades including the Distinguished Alumni Award from Pennsylvania State University and a National Endowment Grant in 1979. Her paintings and prints are included in countless collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Chicago Art Institute, and the Gulf Coast Museum of Florida, and she held hundreds of individual and group exhibitions throughout the country. After moving to Sarasota, Florida in the 1990s she became active in the arts colony there, and taught at various universities, schools, and community organizations right up until her death on August 5th, 2021.

She used inspirational imagery and creates a language of fantasy, emotion and wonder.  After receiving an NEA grant to explore and study the prehistoric symbolism of ancient civilizations, Florence began to develop her own symbolism. Her fanciful creatures of frolicking elephants, playful dogs and cats, colorful serpents and tropical birds combine with abstract marks, lines and curves and levitating figures, dancing magically across her canvases and paper. Her collages are composed of found objects, handmade papers and Putterman’s great interest in giving discarded items a new life and meaning. Her colors are earthy, pungent and bold; and her use of sand and crushed shells on canvas creates an intriguing crackled texture surface to receive her paint. She was not limited to any one particular media, but rather produced paintings in acrylic and oil; works on paper, including etchings, lithographs, woodcuts, silkscreens, woodcuts and monotypes; sculpture; and photography. Florence received a Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) from Pennsylvania State University, followed by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. She used inspirational imagery and creates a language of fantasy, emotion and wonder.  After receiving an NEA grant to explore and study the prehistoric symbolism of ancient civilizations, Florence began to develop her own symbolism. Her fanciful creatures of frolicking elephants, playful dogs and cats, colorful serpents and tropical birds combine with abstract marks, lines and curves and levitating figures, dancing magically across her canvases and paper. Her collages are composed of found objects, handmade papers and Putterman’s great interest in giving discarded items a new life and meaning. Her colors are earthy, pungent and bold; and her use of sand and crushed shells on canvas creates an intriguing crackled texture surface to receive her paint. She was not limited to any one particular media, but rather produced paintings in acrylic and oil; works on paper, including etchings, lithographs, woodcuts, silkscreens, woodcuts and monotypes; sculpture; and photography.
