Pyne' (lower left), the first inscribed 'Florence from San Miniato May 1854' (lower left), the second inscribed 'Foreground to the Piano di Sorento[sic.] from the Convent of S. Antonino' (lower left), the third inscribed 'Civitella from the Serpentaria[sic.] Nr Subiaco, Papal States / Outline of a subject of a rough painting in Water Colour, sold to Ms White. 1862. No. 560. / Copy right secured ...[?] 10. 1862. delivered[?] ...[?] 11.62.' and 'Presented to C Payne 1866' verso, the fourth inscribed 'BACHARACH on the Rhine' (lower right), each 37 x 53.5 cm., four (4), (unframed). Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: In his early years, Pyne was a member of the Bristol School of artists and a close follower of Francis Danby (1793-1861). From 1835 onwards, he travelled extensively on the Continent, gathering material to work up into finished pictures. In 1851, Thomas Agnew & Sons commissioned him to make a three year painting tour of Italy, in which he was accompanied by the Bristol watercolourist William Evans (1809-1858), and it is presumably on this trip that he made several of the present drawings. Pyne's grand compositions also gesture towards the artist's admiration of J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851), who himself produced a number of atmospheric watercolours and drawings inspired by his European travels.

The Bristol Riots of October 1831 were the most violent disturbances to take place in England during the Nineteenth Century. General unrest preceding the great Reform Bill of 1832 sparked off demonstrations when the Recorder of the City, Sir Charles Wetherall arrived on the morning of 29th October. He had asserted in Parliament that the people of Bristol were largely unconcerned by the need for reform. During the following two days, the riots led to the burning of many buildings including the Bishops Palace, half of Queen's Square, the Mansion House, the Toll Houses at Prince Street Bridge and the New Gaol near Bathurst Basin.

James Baker Pyne, RBA, British 1800-1870- Two Coastal landscapes in Le Tréport, Normandy; oils on canvas, each signed and dated 'J.B. PYNE / 1856' (one lower right, the other lower left), one inscribed 'Inscribed on old stretcher: No 6?? 'Environs Du Treport Normandie'' on the upper horizontal stretcher bar, each 27 x 40 cm., two (2). Provenance: Private Collection, UK (by descent). Note: In his early years, Pyne was a member of the Bristol School of artists and a close follower of Francis Danby (1793-1861). From 1835 onwards, he travelled extensively on the Continent, gathering material to work up into finished pictures. Le Tréport is a small fishing port and light industrial town situated in the Pays de Caux, some 21 miles northeast of Dieppe. The mouth of the river Bresle meets the English Channel here, in between the high (110 metres) chalk cliffs and the pebbly beach. These charming coastal scenes exhibit Pyne's technical proficiency, particularly in his masterful depiction of light and shade, and his ability to effectively evoke the movement of the water, particularly as it crashes onto the shore.

United Kingdom,1800-1870 Impressionist depiction of a bridge covered canal with white buildings to one side and trees to the other. Pyne was a member of the Bristol School of artists and widely self taught. Fellow artist William James Müller was apprenticed to him for a time before Pyne became the Vice President of the Society of British Artists.
