        Jan. 27, 2024

        MYLO QUAM (AMERICAN 1941-1996)

        Est: $800 - $1,200

MYLO QUAM (AMERICAN 1941-1996) Los Descaminados (Poor Boys), 1980 oil on canvas 79 x 64 cm (31 1/8 x 25 1/4 in.); unframed signed upper right; dated, titled, inscribed and monogrammed on verso LOT NOTES Mylo Quam was a self-taught artist interested in Greek and Classical studies. Quam attended Brandeis University at the age of sixteen. Throughout his college career he designed sets and costumes for local theatre companies including the Actors Playhouse in New York City and later for the Lucas Hoving Ballet Company, The Opera Municipal de Marseilles, France and created illustrations for The Story of O published by Grove Press in 1970. In 1975 Quam created a series of lithographs based on the poem of Rimbaud, Une Saison En Enfer. In his late twenties Quam preformed on and off-Broadway, becoming the leading role in Royal Hunt of the Sun, working next to actors Jessica Tandy, Katherine Hepburn and Christopher Plummer. However, in his late sixties, he left the stage to focus on his painting. Quam's paintings often derived from the mannerist style of painting drawing on ideas from mythology, Shakespeare and Eastern and Western religion and classics. Often visually dense with disturbing and erotically charged figures and scenes. CONDITION The painting is in good condition. Scattered surface scuffing. Very fine craquelure. Rubbing to the corners. Inspection under UV light shows no sign of restoration. N.B. All lots are sold in as-is condition at the time of sale.
