(Venice 1828–1887) Regatta on the Grand Canal, Venice, oil on canvas, 131 x 189 cm, framed The present magnificent painting by Luigi Querena depicts the vibrant pageantry of Venice’s Regata Storica, held on the Grand Canal. The spectacle, set against the monumental backdrop of the city’s palaces, commemorates the arrival of Caterina Cornaro, Queen of Cyprus, in 1489. This composition depicts the grandeur of the ceremony. Querena’s masterful pictorial attention to detail brings to life the richly decorated bissone, the elaborately decorated boats, some carved and gilded, that form the procession. The crews are dressed in ornate, exotic costumes, and the bustling crowds lining the banks of the Grand Canal lend theatricality to the scene, encapsulating the pomp and splendor of the traditional Venetian festival. The present canvas is closely related to another signed and dated work by Querena, sold at Dorotheum on the 9 November 2021 as lot 520. Given the almost identical dimensions and the close correspondence in subject matter, it is highly probable that the two paintings were conceived as pendants. Together, they form a monumental pair of festive Venetian scenes in the tradition of Canaletto’s pendant views. Their scale and balanced compositions suggest that they were intended to be displayed side by side, offering a panoramic celebration of Venice’s civic splendour. Luigi Querena was the son of Lattanzio Querena, a painter of history and religious subjects. He enrolled at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice at the age of twelve, where he studied with the veduta and architectural painter Federico Moja (1802–1885). Strongly influenced by the Venetian view-painting tradition of the eighteenth century, Querena earned a reputation for reviving the subjects made popular by Canaletto, while adapting them to contemporary taste. His artistic career was shaped not only by his training but also by his political engagement. Querena took an active part in the Venetian uprisings of 1848, producing a celebrated series of eleven tempera paintings now housed in the Museo Correr, Venice. In 1857 he was elected an honorary member of the Accademia di Belle Arti, and he regularly participated in exhibitions organised by artistic societies throughout Italy. His view paintings, such as the present work, reveal both a topographical precision and a lively narrative sense that ensured his enduring success with collectors in his own time and beyond.

(Venice 1824–1887) Venice, Riva degli Schiavoni, signed Luigi Querena, oil on canvas, 46 x 95 cm, framed Provenance: Private Collection, France; Sale, Dorotheum, Vienna, 11 November 2021, lot 405; Private Collection, Italy. Already in 1843 Luigi Querena was among the prize-winners in the competition for Invention and Drawing from Life at the Scuola di Belle Arti in Venice. The painter here depicts a sweeping panoramic view taken from the Riva degli Schiavoni on the side of the Castello district, showing the expanse of water immediately in front, and in the distance the basin before Piazza San Marco. Clearly discernible are the Ducal Palace and the Campanile of San Marco, together with the dome of the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute, a stretch of the Grand Canal, then the Giudecca Canal, and finally the island of San Giorgio. The lagoon is dotted with vessels typical of the period, ranging from gondolas with their felze canopies to sailing ships. The work portrays men and women who meet or pause in contemplation, either in shadow or touched by sunlight on the steps: figures at once part of the current of everyday life and yet seemingly suspended in time—such as the fish seller poised at the top of the bridge, or the violinist descending the stairs.

Ceccheto, Venezia in Chiaro, Dialoghi e Silenzi nella pittura tra Ottocento e Novecento, Venice 2019, pp. 106 and 211, no. 31. A romantic view of the Grand Canal in Venice, presenting a diagonal, almost photographic perspective of the Fondaco dei Turchi, a Venetian-Byzantine palace whose origins date to around 1225. Reconstructed on several occasions, it now houses the Museum of Natural History. In 1621 the Cinque Savi alla Mercanzia leased the building as a funduq—that is, as warehouse and trading post—for Turkish merchants, who maintained it until 1838. Within it were a bazaar, a small mosque and bathing facilities; access was prohibited to “Christian women and beardless youths.” In a state of advanced decay, the palace was rebuilt between 1857 and 1869. The present painting bears the date 1860, when the building had already been acquired by the Municipality of Venice for 80,000 Austrian florins, and captures its appearance prior to the radical restoration, still lacking the reconstructed crenellations. In the foreground, a large barge with men on board has just moored at the landing stage, while in the distance, closing the perspective, rises the church of San Geremia, housing the relics of Saint Lucy the Martyr, together with its Romanesque campanile. Marked realism and an evocative atmospheric treatment characterise this painting by Querena, who animates the scene with figures in contemporary dress beneath a blue sky streaked with grey and pink-tinged clouds that weigh with a “heavy lightness” upon the palaces of the Grand Canal. The painting was exhibited at the 1861 exhibition of the Imperial Royal Venetian Academy of Fine Arts under the title Fondaco de’ Mori.

(Venice 1824–1887) Venice, a View of the Church of San Rocco, signed, dated, Luigi Querena Venezia, 1856, oil on canvas, 65 x 50 cm, framed Provenance: Sale, Sotheby’s, New York, 23 May 1996; acquired from the above - Private Collection, Italy. Luigi Querena attended courses in architecture, perspective, and landscape from 1836. Skilled in using perspective means and variations of light, the artist joined Ippolito Caffi, Federico Moja and Carlo Grubas in translating and updating the best Venetian landscape tradition, whether dealing with views of popular life or monumental perspectives, interiors, or historical episodes. The present lot was painted when the artist was in his early, the space is largely occupied by the imposing bulk of the Frari apse and bell tower, illuminated by the sun and delved into colouristically in the counterpoint of the wall; the animated scene of the small squares and streets in the background is blocked by the colonnade and the tall pediment of San Rocco, which dramatically divides the canvas and seems to gather all the shadows of the small field into itself.

A characteristic view; looking towards the quay, the florid Gothic style of the southern façade of the imposing Doge’s Palace is minutely described, allowing a glimpse of the pyramidal top of St. Mark’s bell tower. These two landmarks are joined by Jacopo Sansovino’s Libreria Marciana with the adjacent Zecca in the piazzetta in the background, alongside the two massive red and grey granite columns known as the Columns of Mark and Todaro, topped by the winged lion and the Greek warrior saint Theodore, the first patron saint of Venice, respectively. This picture is part of the artist’s traditional repertoire.

PANORAMABLICK VON DER RIVA DEGLI SCHIAVONI AUF VENEDIG Öl auf Leinwand. 46 x 94 cm. Signiert unten links „L. Querena“. Gerahmt.
