ALPHONSE LEON QUIZET (1885-1955) Landscape with The Canal Saint-Martin Oil on panel signed lower right - measures 7.25" x 9.5" Hammer Galleries Stamp Verso A Painter born in Paris, self-taught by copying old masters in the Louvre, Alphonse Quizet first exhibited at the Salons de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, des Indépendants and d'Automne in in 1903. He adored the picturesque and sentimental idea of the rustic Parisian suburbs, and painted the Canal Saint-Martin, the Pré-Saint-Gervais, Belleville and the banks of the Marne. Maurice Utrillo, a close childhood friend credits Quizet for helping him begin to paint, and was drawn to the same quiet and solitary places to paint that Quizet preferred. Utrillo considered Quizet his mentor and advisor, and they both shared a tenacious existential passion and dedication to painting.

Private Collection, UK. Note: Quizet was a firmly Parisian painter, with his oeuvre consisting almost entirely of views of the city, and particularly the district of Montmartre, of which the present work is a particularly charming example. He studied painting at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and was closely associated with Marcel Leprin (1891-1933) and Louis Valtat (1869-1952). He was heavily influenced by the work of Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890), as is evident in the loose and unblended brushstrokes of the present work, and in turn shaped the approach of his contemporary Maurice Utrillo (1883-1955), whose compositions exhibit a striking similarity to Quizet's paintings.

ALPHONSE LEON QUIZET (1885-1955) Le Canal Saint-Martin Huile sur panneau signé en bas à droite. Dimensions : 27 x 33 cm Peintre français né à Paris, essentiellement autodidacte en copiant des maîtres anciens au Louvre, Alphonse Quizet débute sa carrière en 1903 et expose aux Salons de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, des Indépendants et d'Automne. Attaché à traduire encore le pittoresque sentimental de ce qui peut demeurer de rusticité aux faubourgs parisiens, il peint avec bonheur le Canal Saint-Martin, le Pré-Saint-Gervais, Belleville ou les bords de la Marne. Ami d'enfance et intime, c'est grâce à Quizet que Maurice Utrillo se met réellement à peindre, cherchant comme lui des endroits solitaires et silencieux. Leur style se rapprochent et Utrillo considère Quizet comme son guide, son maître et son conseiller et Edmond Heuzé dira des deux artistes "Ils formaient un couple pour qui peindre était une raison d'exister".
