    FRANZ RADZIWILL (1895–1983), A PROMINENT G

    Est: -

Franz Radziwill (1895–1983), a prominent German painter of New Objectivity and magical realism, pre-printed postcard designed by the artist featuring a bust portrait of a woman, presumably the addressee Rosa Schapire, mixed media with pen, colored pencil, and watercolor on paper, monogrammed FR lower right, on the reverse bearing a brief handwritten note with signature addressed to the Hamburg art historian, patron, and collector Dr. Rosa Schapire (1874–1954) (“Warm regards, Fr. Radziwill”), never mailed, 15.7 x 10.5 cm, upper right corner with paper loss, mounted and framed under a mat, 46 x 41.5 cm, unopened, with a photocopy of the postcard’s reverse side on the backing board on the reverse.—The drawing likely dates from the artist’s Expressionist period; he turned to New Objectivity beginning in 1925. Schapire supported the artist group “Die Brücke” and, in particular, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, through whom Schapire also came into contact with Franz Radziwill, with whom she had been friends since the 1920s. In 1921, Schapire wrote the first major article on Radziwill’s art.

    Franz Radziwill Evening

    Est: €6,000 - €8,000

Franz Radziwill 1895 Strohausen bei Rodenkirchen - 1983 Wilhelmshaven Evening Signed "Fr. Radziwill" lower right. Titled lower left. Gouache over ink drawing on brownish paper. Approx. 30 x 38 cm. Sheet size: Sheet size: 32.5 x 42 cm. Slightly browned overall and on the edges of the sheet. Upper edges of the sheet attached to the backing cardboard, remnants of old mounting visible. Framed (52 x 62 cm).

    Est: €30,000 - €40,000

Signed 'Franz Radziwill' in green lower left in the image. Inscribed with the work number '409' verso in brown. Along with his striking landscapes featuring surrealistically magical elements, still lifes form a second focal point in Franz Radziwill’s oeuvre. He often combined the beauty of smooth, well-proportioned vessels made of porcelain, stoneware or glass with the organic forms of fruits and flowers. “Stillleben mit gelber Kanne und rosa Krug mit Blumen” brings together and forms a harmonious whole out of a number of objects that are very different in terms of form and texture. On a table in front of a window, we find two shimmering, well-formed vessels combined with a heavy leather-bound book, a rectangular case and an apple. The draped fabrics of the curtain and tablecloth complement the ensemble with the haptic element of their gentle folds. A little bouquet of wild flowers crowns the pink jug. A low viewpoint has been selected, placing the objects at viewers’ eye level. In addition to its diverse forms and textures, which invest each of the objects with its own independent character, the arrangement is animated by the deliberate use of complementary colour contrasts.

Franz Radziwill, Der Winter ist schön, 1963

    Est: €50,000 - €70,000

Signed 'Franz Radziwill' in red lower right. Inscribed with work number '557' in red-brown verso. There can scarcely be another artist who had Franz Radziwill’s ability to imbue a naturalistic landscape with unearthly and mysterious elements, combining the beautiful with the unfathomable. Here, he has composed a nocturnal winter landscape in a richly detailed manner of painting. The snow-covered plain is divided up through a stand of bare deciduous trees and a row of evergreens with three buildings nestled up against them. But this rural idyll is filled with elements that do not seem to be of this world. Menacing, amorphously fissured boulders grow up out of the earth in the foreground, and the gigantic celestial disc floating above it all is reminiscent of a machine component. The palette of colours breaking through the natural brown, grey and white of a winter night is also surreal. The sky, which features a pink crescent moon, glows in broad strips of cobalt blue and green while the celestial disc shines in yellow and red like an artificial sun. The colours radiate down on to the landscape and streaks of them spread through the snow. A mysterious apparition between the two groups of trees leads a chromatic life of its own, and its gently curving arabesques call to mind a bodiless dancing dervish. “Der Winter ist schön” formerly belonged to the collection of Georg Düser (1888-1982). This neurologist and writer from Oldenburg was interested in art and, after he met Franz Radziwill in Dangast in 1923, a close friendship bound the two men for the rest of their lives. Extremely fascinated by the artist’s work, Düser very methodically built up a significant collection of paintings over the decades, playing an essential part in Franz Radziwill’s increasing popularity.

Franz Radziwill, Bauerndorf. Verso: Stehender Akt mit Hühnern, 1923 (recto) resp. 1920-1921 (verso)

    Est: €70,000 - €90,000

Monogrammed 'F R.' in dark blue lower right. Verso inscribed 'Erinnerung an Dangast' on stretcher. This important, double-sided painting comes from Franz Radziwill’s expressive early work. It is defined by open, broadly flowing bands of colour and symbol-like, abbreviated forms but already anticipates something of the enigmatic components from his later magical realist oeuvre. On the front side of the canvas, created in 1923, the painter has used luminous colours and energetic lineation to capture a view of the house he had just purchased in Dangast, a former fisherman's cottage, nestled among the fields and trees and resting snugly alongside the curving country lane. The optical emphasis placed on this central motif through the dense, boldly colourful manner of painting is striking. Conversely, the trees and the houses of his neighbours alongside and behind his property are recorded in black-and-white contrasts with just a few modest accents of colour, causing them to clearly recede behind the centre of the picture. The painting is dedicated to the art historian and writer Wilhelm Niemeyer (1874-1960), who had been decisively supporting the artist since 1922 and visited him in Dangast the year this work was created. He owned it from 1924 and, for a long time, it was exhibited as a loan at the Schleswig-Holstein state museum in Gottorf Castle. The image on what is now the reverse side was created somewhat earlier and depicts a standing female nude holding a bird in her hand and placed within the setting of a village. The agitated hens and villagers in the background underscore the humorously absurd character of the scene, whose additive juxtaposition of people and animals in a rural context recalls motifs by Marc Chagall.

    Radziwill, Franz: Allein vorn

    Est: €12,000 - €18,000

Allein vorn Öl auf Leinwand, auf Holz kaschiert. 1969. 49 x 61 cm.

    Est: €10,000 - €15,000

Bildnis des Schauspielers Aubin (Alain Toubas) Öl auf Leinwand, kaschiert auf Malpappe. 1969. 62 x 53 cm. Unten links mit Pinsel in Rotbraun signiert „Franz Radziwill“, verso mit Pinsel in Rotbraun bezeichnet "603". Schulze 807. Aquarell u. Gouache/Papier. R. u. monogr. "Fr. R.". Verso mit Werk-Nr. 201 versehen u. "1924" [sic.] dat., Stempel "Franz Radziwill (/) Nordseebad Dangast b. Varel i. Franz Radziwill (1895 Strohausen b. Rodenkirchen - Wilhelmshaven 1983) – Schlengen

    Est: €3,000 - €5,000

Aquarell auf leichtem Aquarellpapier. (1952). Ca. 34 x 44,4 cm. Signiert unten rechts. Insgesamt in guter Erhaltung. Taxation: differenzbesteuert (VAT: Margin Scheme)

Monogrammed and dated 'F.R. 24' in white lower right. We would like to thank Gerd Presler, Weingarten, for confirmatory and continuative information. "An early painting with a remarkable history: painted in 1924, exhibited in Berlin and Oldenburg in 1925, sold immediately, it remained in private ownership for the following one hundred years. Everything happened so quickly at that time that this ‘interior’ - Radziwill spoke of ‘still life’ - could only be provided with fragmentary information in the authoritative lists of his paintings (1924; 1995). Today, the provenance is certain: a label on the stretcher refers to the exhibition at Galerie Alfred Heller, Berlin 1925, and a note in the catalogue of the 'Vereinigung für junge Kunst', Oldenburg, October 1925, gives the title under number 38: 'Stillleben mit gelbem Topf'. During all these long years, it was in the estate of Marie Scharf (1905 - 1999), the niece of the art historian and Radziwill collector Dr. Wilhelm Niemeyer, Hamburg. A carefully guarded treasure - and a document of upheaval: this painting stands at the beginning of the path that would lead the painter to the center of the 'New Objectivity'. He realised this; he knew it: “Life has plunged me into the greatest thing to come (...)”, he wrote to the Hamburg lecturer on 8th March 1924." Gerd Presler

In the Christmas greeting to Marie Scharf, Emden, the painter appears as if he had stepped out of a work by Rembrandt, an artist he had always sought to be close to when he absorbed the works of classical Dutch painting and drawing on his trips to Holland." Est: €30,000 - €40,000

Signed 'Franz Radziwill' in grey lower left. Inscribed with the work number '580' in brown verso. The eye of the viewer is presented with an initially classic-looking still life in the style of the New Objectivity. Containers with various materials and functions are placed together on a dark ground: two beautifully shaped ceramic pots, a mug with a lid, a shimmering glass carafe, a corked bottle of wine. As announced by the title of the picture, the painter is celebrating the pure, simple beauty of the arrangement. The objects added alongside the containers – a brush, tube of paint and sponge – are insignias of painting and set the still life inside the artist’s studio. But the scene opens up into an enigmatic, unworldly dimension along the left edge of the painting. A surreal dream world appears in the form of a picture within a picture: immersed in a pale, silvery shimmer, a pair of cherries float within a cosmic space in front of clouds and a spherical object. Still lifes with a deeper level of significance and a magical component inscribed in the arranged objects were a key element in Radziwill’s oeuvre from the very beginning. From the 1940s, explicit fissures and cracks open up in these images, as well as his landscapes, integrating fantastic or menacing settings into his still lifes. The profound and surreal element is no longer just intimated, instead, it forges a path into the real world of things.

Franz Radziwill, Die grüne Planke mit Hut, 1969

    Est: €50,000 - €60,000

Signed 'Franz Radziwill' in brown lower left. Inscribed with the work number '614' in yellow verso. Franz Radziwill circles round unnamed mysteries and dramas in his always enigmatic paintings. In “Die grüne Planke” the artist lays down a trail of clues consisting of seemingly disconnected objects found hanging from or lying in front of the fence from the picture’s title: cigarette butts, a half-burnt candle, a towel, a black hat – it almost seems as if we were looking at the materials left behind after a surveillance operation, the site of an act of espionage. But perhaps what is enigmatic and menacing here is not these human remnants at all but what lies above the scene? Instead of shrubbery, giant individual leaves rise up behind the fence, and the decoratively painted, spherical form of one of Radziwill’s mysterious celestial apparitions hovers in the blood-red sky. From the early 1940s these indecipherable celestial objects become a defining element of his works. The riddle posed here cannot be solved – not even by the artist himself: “My pictures do have a theme. It will have guided me during my work, but I myself don’t know anything about this process. Recently I was standing with my wife in front of a finished picture, gauging whether the painting could withstand my critique […] finally I said: I can’t comprehend the fact that all this passed through me, and I’m equally unable to say why the picture turned out like this and not differently. But the way I feel in this case is how I feel with every picture: the creative process remains obscure,” wrote Franz Radziwill in 1963 (cited in: Brigitte Reinhardt, in: Andrea Firmenich/Rainer W. Schulze, Franz Radziwill 1895 bis 1983. Monographie und Werkverzeichnis, Cologne 1995, p. 42).

Firmenich/Schulze 815. - Provenienz: Ehemals R. This event, which took place one hundred years ago, is now commemorated by two exhibitions: in Vienna (Leopold Museum) and Mannheim (Kunsthalle). Franz Radziwill is at the centre of both exhibitions – and at the same time, as a ‘magical realist’, he stands alone. The background can be found in this extraordinarily intense painting: ‘The Wadden Sea’. Dangast When Franz Radziwill, just twenty-five years old, was chasing through noisy days and nights in Berlin in 1920, he met Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. Schmidt-Rottluff sensed what was going on in his young colleague's mind: ‘Franz Radziwill, I used to be in Dangast a lot. This is something for you!’ And indeed he did. The aspiring ‘representative of a new generation of creators’ travelled to the remote fishing village on the Jadebusen, south of Wilhelmshaven, and stayed. For the next sixty years until his death on 12 August 1983, he lived and worked between calm and storm under a constantly changing sky, in the eternal rhythm of the tides and that expanse that extends to the horizon – and beyond. Finally, he was able to summarise: ‘No picture of mine is possible without Dangast.’ The painting ‘The Wadden Sea’ was created in 1930 from the abundance of what he had seen and experienced. A lonely sailing boat glides through the waves of the rising tide towards the west, the setting sun – and infinity. At the helm: the painter. Franz Radziwill Evening

    Est: €7,000 - €9,000

Franz Radziwill 1895 Strohausen bei Rodenkirchen - 1983 Wilhelmshaven Evening Signed "Fr. Radziwill" lower right. Titled lower left. Gouache over ink drawing auf brownish paper. Approx. 30 x 38 cm. Blattgröße: Sheet size: 32.5 x 42 cm. Slightly browned overall and on the edges of the sheet. Upper edges of the sheet attached to the backing cardboard, remnants of old mounting visible. Framed (52 x 62 cm).

    Est: €120,000 - €140,000

Signed 'Franz Radziwill' in white lower left. Work number 'XI' verso. In 1923 Franz Radziwill painted a colourful and cheerful painting: “Dorflandschaft”. Coming from Berlin, he had just married, bought a house and settled in Dangast. For the next six decades, his work as an artist would centre around this village on the edge of the Jade Bight. “No picture by me is possible without Dangast.” This contented sense of having arrived is also reflected in the etching “Dorflandschaft” (Wv 27 1923, cf. comparative ill.), which was created at the same time and features the same motif and title. Here, as in the case of the painting, his house at 3 Sielstraße is surrounded by flowers and protected by a tree. He was doing well – and things were going well. His career was on an upward trajectory: “Passive Members of the BRÜCKE” from Hamburg purchased 27 pictures. In Berlin he was able to exhibit his works with those of Giorgio de Chirico, Paul Klee, Oskar Schlemmer, Otto Dix and Wassily Kandinsky. In Amsterdam they were shown with those of the leading German expressionists in the Stedelijk Museum. However, ill-fated and infinitely fraught years soon followed: his paintings were considered “degenerate”. 274 works, including 59 paintings, were confiscated from museums, denounced, burned. Appalled and humiliated, the painter retreated to his house at the edge of the horizon. And then: the painting “Dorflandschaft” – created under the fortunate circumstances of 1923 – suddenly and unexpectedly stood on his easel again in 1963. Was it a testament to that other, long-gone time, a pleasant memory of better days? No, not for Franz Radziwill! He thought differently, he “continued painting”, brought it up to date. In his hands, this canvas was transformed into a testament spanning four decades. He inscribed the progressed time into this and almost 60 other paintings. Radziwill did not understand himself in terms of a witness of a moment in the past. Quite the contrary: in 1963 the painting “Dorflandschaft” – now retitled “Rindvieh führt Rindvieh” – concentrated together a larger span of time spanning four decades. The painter has recognised and preserved the flowers of peace – and inserted the instruments of war, which repeatedly flew over his house. He has recognised and preserved those years of happiness – and the bitter traces of the unhappiness that man brings upon man. A wise image, in which the artist has brought more together than o n e moment. Gerd Presler
