A la edad de 27 años, Alice Rahon se mudó a París, donde conoció a su primer esposo Wolfgang Paalen, unión que le permitió relacionarse con artistas surrealistas, entablando amistad con André Bretón, Max Ernst y Antonin Artaud. Con ellos compartió ideas y posturas artísticas que la influenciaron de forma directa para que se expresara de otra manera, definiendo así su estilo pictórico. Los viajes que realizó con su marido, incluyendo su visita a la India, a Alaska y a las cuevas rupestres de Altamira en España, ejercieron también un fuerte impacto en su producción de estilo surrealista. En 1947 se divorció de Wolfgang Paalen, ocasionándole un aislamiento social pero un incremento en su obra; no obstante, tiempo después contrajo segundas nupcias con el cineasta canadiense Edward Fitzgerald, con quien realizó proyectos teatrales y cinematográficos. Su carrera artística fue vasta y productiva, formó parte del grupo de intelectuales mexicanos, entre ellos Rufino Tamayo, Carlos Mérida y Octavio Paz. Expuso en las galerías e instituciones más importantes del país, realizando muestras individuales en la Galería Pecanins, Galería Oscar Román, el Museo de Arte Moderno y el Palacio de Bellas Artes de la Ciudad de México, además de haber participado en la Exposición Internacional del Surrealismo en la Galería de Arte Mexicano en 1940. Alice comenzó a dibujar desde temprana edad, un pasatiempo que le sirvió de terapia cuando estuvo en reposo en dos ocasiones por diferentes accidentes, un hecho que le marcó de por vida y se reflejó en su producción artística. A principios de la década de 1930 contrajo matrimonio con Wolfgang Paalen, esta unión le permitió relacionarse con el grupo Surrealista, principalmente con Antonin Artaud y André Bretón. Con ellos compartía ideas y posturas artísticas, influyeron de manera directa y decisiva en la sensibilidad de Rahon y en su necesidad de expresarse de una forma nueva. A partir de su llegada a México en 1939, por invitación de Frida Kahlo, Rahon se dedicó a la pintura explorando diversas técnicas que enriqueció con arenas y esgrafiados. Al año de su estancia en nuestro país, participó en la "Exposición internacional del Surrealismo" organizada por César Moro y Paalen en la Galería de Arte Mexicano; parte aguas que le permitió posteriormente exponer de manera regular en México, Nueva York, París y Líbano. Rahon wrote Surrealist poetry while living in France, and began painting after moving to Mexico in 1934 with her first husband. Rahon was good friends with Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, and was part of the emergence of abstract art in Mexico. Her painted work is a reflection of her written work in its use of Surrealist imagery and abstraction. Alice se involucró con la pintura con la pasión que la caracterizaba. Tomó muy en serio este nuevo medio de expresión, y algunos años más tarde reunió una serie de obras que fueron presentadas en su primera exposición individual en la Galería de Arte Mexicano en 1944. Su fuerza expresiva se impuso a su técnica y estilo, donde la fantasía plasmada, proveniente de su particular manera de concebir el mundo, era vívida y experimentada por ella misma. En 1940 exhibió por primera vez sus pinturas en la Exposición Internacional del Surrealismo organizada por Paalen y César Moro en la Galería de Arte Mexicano. En 1946 adquirió la nacionalidad mexicana. La fascinación por el arte primitivo fue constante en la obra de Alice Rahon. Lo consideraba estrechamente vinculado a la magia, a los reinos de lo invisible. El tema aparece una y otra vez en sus poemas y en su obra plástica. Alice Rahon (Mexican, 1914-1987) Daphnis y Chloe, alternatively titled Encuentro Breve Signed and dated "Alice Rahon 63" in pen l.r., partially titled "Daphnis y Chl... /Encuentro Bre..." on the reverse, identified on a label from the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes, Museo Nacional de Arte Moderno Mexico, affixed to the paper backing. Oil and sand on paper/board, 11 3/4 x 16 in. (29.8 x 40.6 cm), framed. Condition: Partially reinforced signature in graphite, mounted to Masonite, abrasions to u.l. and u.r. quadrants, surface grime. Provenance: Through the collection of the artist; private Manchester, New Hampshire, collection. N.B. ALICE RAHON Montañas azules Firmado y fechado 1968. Óleo sobre cartón. Agradecemos a Oscar Román por la verificación de autenticidad de esta obra, marzo de 2013. Presenta ligeras craqueladuras. Alice se involucró con la pintura con la pasión que la caracterizaba. Tomó muy en serio este nuevo medio de expresión, y algunos años más tarde reunió una serie de obras que fueron presentadas en su primera exposición individual en la Galería de Arte Mexicano en 1944. Su fuerza expresiva se impuso a su técnica y estilo, donde la fantasía plasmada, proveniente de su particular manera de concebir el mundo, era vívida y experimentada por ella misma. Unía el cosmos, la naturaleza y los objetos con una narrativa de juegos y afinidades, con vitalidad, ternura y afecto.
