Marcantonio Raimondi - Hercules en Antaeus

    Est: €300 - €600

Printmaker: Marcantonio Raimondi (c. 1480–1534) Designer: Giulio Romano (Giulio Pippi, c. 1499–1546)Italy, c. 1520–1525. Copper engraving depicting a mythological representation of Hercules vanquishing the giant Antaeus by lifting him off the ground and strangling him. The composition was designed by Giulio Romano, one of Raphael's most important pupils, and engraved by Marcantonio Raimondi, the most influential printmaker of the Italian High Renaissance. Raimondi's engraving played a key role in the spread of the Raphaelesque and Giulio-Romano styles throughout Europe. The print was often attributed to Raphael in older literature, but in the modern art-historical view it is considered a design by Giulio Romano.

Raimondi (Marcantonio, circa 1480-1527/34). The Life of the Virgin, after Durer, early 16th-century * Raimondi (Marcantonio, circa 1480-1527/34). The Life of the Virgin, after Durer, 1505-1515, the set of 17 engravings on laid paper (12 bearing indistinct circle watermark, including 2 with the letter 'P', another with letter 'G' within the circle), each with printed number from the series to lower edge, Durer monogram to each, each trimmed to plate mark, 285 x 210 mm (11 1/4 x 8 1/4 ins) QTY: (17) NOTE: Bartsch 621-637. According to the 16th-century biographer Giorgio Vasari, Raimondi’s copies were so successful that they were sold as authentic Dürers. Vasari relates that Dürer became so enraged that he travelled to Venice to appeal to the city council. The ruling, however, stated that Raimondi could continue publishing his copies provided that he remove Dürer’s monogram. Although Vasari’s account is probably heavily embellished, Dürer was in fact an early pioneer for the notion of intellectual property, and similar legal contests between Dürer and his copyists are documented in other cities.
