  • Basil Rákóczi,  British/French 1908-1979 -  Fishermen, 1975
    Sep. 08, 2026

    Basil Rákóczi,  British/French 1908-1979 -  Fishermen, 1975

    Est: £600 - £800

Basil Rákóczi,  British/French 1908-1979 -  Fishermen, 1975;  watercolour and pastel on paper, signed lower left 'Rákóczi', further signed, titled and dated on the reverse 'Rákóczi The Catch 1975', 51 x 62 cm (unframed) (ARR)  Provenance:  the Estate of the Artist  Note:  Rákóczi (1908-1979) and his partner, Kenneth Hall (1913-1946), founded The White Stag Group of modernist artists in 1935. Influenced by Surrealism and founded in London, they moved to Ireland in late 1939, following the start of the Second World War. There the Group flourished, gaining both local and continental members, including Nano Reid and Patrick Scott. Rakoczi and Halls work brought a modernism to Dublin and they gained a sizeable and positive reputation for their work, which focused on psychological states and esoteric myth and symbols.  Instrumental to both artists careers, was the influential dealer Lucy Wertheim, who ran a celebrated gallery in Mayfair during the 1930s, one of the spaces focused on young artists working in a Modern idiom. Wertheim promoted major figures such as Barbara Hepworth, Christopher Wood, Frances Hodgkins and Henry Moore at an early age, but she is perhaps most known for her support of a diverse group of lesser known artists, many of whom worked in either expressionistic or faux-naïve styles. An exhibition of Wertheims legacy 'A Life in Art & Reuniting the Twenties Group' has recently been on display at Towner Eastbourne, UK, including works by both Hall and Rákóczi.

    Est: £300 - £400

▲ Basil Rakoczi (British, 1908-1979) The Three Graces mixed media on paper (54 x 39cm; framed 70 x 56cm) Condition Report: The medium has the appearance of oil based printing ink, the surface of which is lightly textured, possibly due to some shrinkage or contraction over time in places. Under raking light the finish is somewhat patchy and uneven with a matt appearance in some areas and glossy appearance in others. The ink is slightly thin in places, however this appears to be the intention of the artist rather than a later condition issue. Not examined under UV light or viewed out of glazed frame. Basil Rákóczi,  Troll Skating, 1961

    Est: £400 - £600

Basil Rákóczi,  British/French 1908-1979 -  Troll Skating, 1961;  oil on paper, signed lower left 'Rákóczi' and bears inscription in pencil with artist's name, title, date and number on the reverse 'No 2877 / Troll Skating / B. Rákóczi '61', 32.6 x 50 cm (unframed) (ARR)  Provenance:  the Estate of the Artist  Note:  this was a pure example of Rakoczi's Subjective Expressionism. This style of painting he began experimenting with from the early 1950's and returned to over many years. He would stand in front of his easel and allow whatever came into his mind to be placed onto the paper or canvas. When he felt he had finished he would then stand back and imagine what he had painted and only then give it its title. The work is highly indicitive of Surrealist automatism and in particular the work of his contemporary Ithell Colquhoun.  Rákóczi (1908-1979) and his partner, Kenneth Hall (1913-1946), founded The White Stag Group of modernist artists in 1935. Rákóczi 48', 50.5 x 35.3 cm (unframed) (ARR) Provenance:  the Estate of the Artist  Note: in this early work, Rákóczi creates a Surrealist image based on a classic Corinthian vase from around 500BC called a cenochoe, meaning a wine pitcher or jug.  Rákóczi (1908-1979) and his partner, Kenneth Hall (1913-1946), founded The White Stag Group of modernist artists in 1935. Est: €1,500 - €2,000

Basil Ivan Rákóczi (1908-1979) FISHERMEN oil on canvas signed lower right; signed again on reverse h:12  w:16 in. Basil Ivan Rákóczi was born in Chelsea, London in 1908 to a Hungarian father and Irish mother. He studied at the Brighton School of Art before enrolling in the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, Paris. Rákóczi was proud of his Celtic and gypsy heritage which influenced his bohemian lifestyle and more particularly his practice. In 1933, he established the Society of Creative Psychology in London. There, Rákóczi would meet his life-long friend, artist Kenneth Hall, during one of the society's meetings in 1935. That same year they set up The White Stag Group whose philosophy, which they called Subjectivist Art, was not associated with any particular style or set belief but rather encouraged an exploration of psychology and of modernist ideas. Advocating for peace at the dawn of World War II, the White Stag Group relocated to Ireland in 1939 to avoid Hall's conscription. The group's first exhibition was held in Rákóczi's flat in 1940. Among the artists associated with the group were Patrick Scott, Gerard Dillon, Evie Hone, Mainie Jellett and Louis le Brocquy among others. Rákóczi and Hall organised their soon-to-be most successful exhibition, the 'Exhibition of Subjective Art' in 1944. The exhibition was praised by the Irish Times for its freshness and opened a new door for modern art in Dublin. Leaving Dublin for Paris in 1946, Rákóczi continued exhibiting with the Royal Hibernian Academy and the Irish Exhibition of Living Art. A retrospective of Rákóczi's work with the White Stag Group was held in the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin in 2005.
