In 1970, he became a policy advisor to the Office of the Taiwan leader. In 1971, he moved to the United States, where he later settled. He authored a book titled A Brief Account of a Floating Life. He passed away in Los Angeles in 1995 at the age of 97. ARTIST BIO:Jao Tsung-I (1917–2018) was a towering figure in modern Chinese scholarship and a distinguished calligrapher, painter, and seal carver. Born in Chaozhou, Guangdong province, he was widely regarded as one of the most erudite and versatile scholars of the 20th and early 21st centuries. His academic work spanned an extraordinary range of disciplines, including Dunhuang studies, oracle bone inscriptions, philology, history, literature, and religious studies. Renowned for his profound learning, Jao was often mentioned alongside Ji Xianlin as one of the two great masters of contemporary Chinese scholarship. Parallel to his scholarly achievements, Jao Tsung-I cultivated a highly refined artistic practice rooted in classical literati traditions. His calligraphy integrates elements of seal, clerical, running, and cursive scripts, distinguished by its archaic elegance and scholarly depth. His paintings, often depicting landscapes and scholarly themes, are imbued with a quiet, contemplative spirit and a strong sense of cultural continuity. Jao’s art is inseparable from his scholarship, exemplifying the ideal of the literati artist in which learning and artistic expression are fully integrated. His works are highly esteemed by collectors for their intellectual richness, cultural significance, and refined aesthetic.
