Raphael Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1483 - d. 1520

Few artistic works carry the same name recognition of Raphael paintings, and for good reason. He was born as Raffaello Sanzio in 1483, and Raphael's drawings and paintings can be found all over the world, including in the Louvre in Paris, the Vatican Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. He was one of the most influential artists of the Renaissance era and is still celebrated for his portraits, frescoes, Madonnas, and ornate architectural style.

The death of Rafael’s father forced him to take over the family painting business at age 11, but he soon surpassed his father’s artistic talents and accomplishments. Influenced by the likes of Michelangelo and Leonardo de Vinci, he quickly became one of Italy's most sought-after artists. Raphael's artwork includes The Three Graces, The Sistine Madonna, and The School of Athens. Collectors can find antique original paintings for sale at auctions and galleries worldwide.

  • Raffaello Sanzio, called Raphael

    Raffaello Sanzio, called Raphael

    Est: €120,000 - €180,000

(Urbino 1483–1520 Rome) Head of a young man, ink, black and red chalk on paper, 70 x 56 mm, framed Inscribed on the reverse ‘P 444’ Provenance: Collection of Giovanni Battista Clarici (1542–1602); Biblioteca Ambrosiana, Milan (before 1661 – until the early 20th Century); Private Collection, Florence (according to Oberhuber); sale, Galerie Bassenge, Berlin 30 May 2008, lot 6608 (as School of Raphael); where acquired by the present owner Literature: E. Knab, E. Mitsch, K. Oberhuber, S. Ferino-Pagden, Raphael. Die Zeichnungen, Stuttgart 1983, p. 607, no. 518 (as Raphael?); S. Mara, Il collezionismo di disegni nel tardo Cinquecento a Milano e le origini della della raccolta grafica dell'Ambrosiana: il caso di Giovanni Battista Clarici, in: La donazione della raccolta d'arte di Federico Borromeo all'Ambrosiana 1618–2018, Confronti e prospettive, ed. by A. Rocca, A. Rovetta, A. Squizzato, Milan 2019, mentioned on p. 372, fig. 14, illustrated (as formerly part of Giovanni Battista Clarici’s ‘Libro di disegni’) We are grateful to Paul Joannides for endorsing the attribution after examination of the present drawing in the original. The work is accompanied by a letter from Jürg Meyer zur Capellen, dated 2016, independently endorsing the attribution. The present sheet shows a sketch in ink of a young man’s head turned to the right, almost in profile. It has been trimmed and the edges are somewhat irregular on all sides. On the verso there is the inscription ‘P 444’, which relates to Passavant II, 1839, p. 581, no. 444. Passavant mentions the sheet, which was once in the collection of Sir Thomas Lawrence, as follows: ‘A head, very small format, by Rafael’s hand. It is attached to a larger sheet, on which there are four other drawings’. The sheet’s later provenance is unclear - Passavant does not mention it in the French edition of his Raphael work in 1860 and presumably the sheet was in an unknown location and inaccessible to scholars for a time Oberhuber included it, albeit with reservation, in Raphael’s oeuvre of drawings (see literature 1983, no. 518). His cursory text lacks any measurements, which raises the question of whether he was able to study this work in the original, or whether he merely based his opinion on a photograph. In the present sketch Raphael concentrated solely on the head and around the pen and ink sketch there is a red chalk drawing with broad strokes in the right third of the sheet, which cannot be read in a figurative sense. It is rather unlikely that the sketch originally contained any more of the figure, as the downward pen strokes diminish. This is the type of individual sketch that emerges at an early stage in the development of a pictorial composition. Sketches of this kind are used to outline a figure’s larger compositional context or to capture a fleeting pictorial idea. In the present sheet, the artist’s main interest is in capturing the head; the clothing, presumably a wide cloak, is only indicated with a few loose pen strokes. The profile is emphasised with a strong, only slightly offset line, the curls framing the head are given in tight sweeps that become longer towards the neck. A large part of the face is covered by hatching to indicate shading, the strokes of which end in little hooks. The ear is drawn with a few searching sweeps, the last line of which indicates the earlobe. Despite the sparing use of artistic means here, the young person’s posture is indicated: clad in a wide cloak, he is characterised as leaning forward, bowing his head slightly, expressing interest but also reverence. Loose sketches appear early on in Raphael’s oeuvre, but the artist appears to have only developed the present, succinctly accentuated sketching style during his Florentine years following his engagement with Leonardo da Vinci. Joannides dates this work to circa 1507 and compares it to a Nude man advancing to the right, British Museum (see P. Joannides, The Drawings of Raphael, 1983, p. 153, no. 85v). Oberhuber related the present sheet to Raphael’s modello for the tapestry of the Calling of Peter, of 1514, and specifically to the disciple John. The present sketch has similarities with the head of John, both in terms of the type and the specific shading with light illuminating the head from the top left. It is a similar lighting situation to that found in the surviving examples of studies for head of John (see op. cit. Oberhuber, 1983, nos. 513, 515, 517). One difference between the present sheet and these lies in the slightly different position of the young man’s head: here the head is turned slightly downwards and does not show the upward gaze characteristic of the figure in the drawings. However, it could be possible that this sheet shows an early pictorial idea for the head of John. Meyer zur Capellen suggested that the present small head study possesses a soulfulness that is particularly characteristic of Raphael’s drawings of this form.

Rafael Santi (Raffaello Santi) from Urbino (1483-1520) - Italian painter and architect, one of the greatest artists in all of world history. Oh, love... You are the mother of joy, the mother of peace! - Rafael exclaims. - Cleanse our eyes with your rays so that they can see the invisible... Raphael was called the master of Madonnas. His images of Madonnas are a paean to motherhood; to earthly, kind and happy mothers, filled with natural solemnity and uplifting significance. We know that he drew one of the Madonnas from a peasant woman he met on the street; the other - with his beloved. Raphaels Florentine Madonnas are beautiful, pretty, touching and enchanting young mothers. The Madonnas he created in Rome, i.e., during the period of full artistic maturity, acquire different features. These are already mistresses, goddesses of goodness and beauty, powerful with their femininity, ennobling the world, softening human Width: 11.5cm, Height: 11.5cm, Depth: 5cm, Weight: 0.12kg, Condition: Excellent, Material: Porcelain, ID: ID-ANTQ-2424

    Jul. 26, 2024

Raffael (Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino) - Nachfolge, Madonna mit der Nelke

    Est: €45,000 - €90,000

Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino) - Successor of: Madonna with the Carnation. Italy, fr. 17th cent. Seated in an interior, Mary is handing red carnations to her son, who is sitting on a cushion on her lap; the colour and shape of the carnations allude to his impending passion. On the right is a window with a view of a wide landscape with a castle. Oil/copper. 29.3 x 23.8 cm. - Cleaned. - The painting mentioned in the older art literature was long known in specialist circles only through numerous copies and was considered lost until the early 1990s, when the version in the Duke of Northumberland's collection, previously also considered a copy, was recognised as an original. Following the purchase of the painting by London's National Gallery in 2004, there were numerous art historical and public discussions about the authenticity of the painting. As a result, the National Gallery published extensive expert reports to confirm the authenticity of the painting. - For the numerous variants and copies of the painting and the discussion about the authenticity of the work at the National Gallery, see the dissertation by Dr Ingrid Schade-Schlieder ''Die Kopien der Madonna mit der Nelke von Raffael'', Würzburg 2009. // Raffael (Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino) - Nachfolge: Madonna mit der Nelke. Italien, fr. 17. Jh.
