WILLIAM RAPHAEL, R.C.A.AWAITING MOTHER’S RETURN ON A SNOWY DAYoil on canvassigned and dated 1891 28 ins x 17.25 ins; 71.8 cms x 43.8 cms Provenance:Private Collection, TorontoLiterature:Sharon Goelman, William Raphael, R.C.A.: Retrospective Exhibition (1833-1914), (catalogue) Walter Klinkhoff Gallery, Montreal, September 7-21, 1996, page 1.Note:Sharon Goelman writes that “Raphael was best known for his exemplary portraits and lively Canadian genre scenes.” This work incorporates both of the artist’s fortés. Effectively, an informal triple portrait, it is evidence of William Raphael at capacity, expertly rendering the particular essence of each of the characters: infant, child and elder. This painting serves as a kind of figurative “sampler”.Furthermore, with paint and brush the artist conjures stone and snow, fur, flesh, and fabric, the coarseness of one balancing the softness of another. As a new immigrant to Canada, Raphael had an interest bordering on obsession with accurately depicting the details of habitant life. Here he provides himself with an opportunity to riff on the quotidien details of the new world: the people, their clothing and the settings, all of which he closely observes and renders.

Russell Harper, Painting in Canada: A History, University of Toronto Press, Toronto, 1977 pages 145-146.Dennis Reid, A Concise History of Canadian Painting, Oxford University Press, Toronto, 1973, page 79.Note:Both Raphael and Krieghoff are renowned for their Canadian sleigh scenes and character portraits of habitants. While similar at first glance, they are significantly different in their handling of these subjects. Here, for example, Raphael demonstrates a freer execution of his subject than could be expected from his younger compatriot who expressed a virtual obsession with detail.Describing him as the "Pioneer Jewish Painter in Canada", Russell Harper credits Prussian-born Raphael together with his contemporaries Adolphe Vogt and Otto Jacobi as contributing significantly to advancing landscape painting in Canada.  Together, these three artists, writes Dennis Reid "set a new direction".English landscape painting had exerted its influence over early Canadian landscape artists, particularly those in Ontario. French painting at this time held little sway; this would come later. Unlike their American contemporaries prior to the turn of the century, few Canadians had studied art in Germany despite the fact that, according to Harper, "the Berlin approach symbolized all that was most effective in contemporary painting." It was the result of the immigration to Canada of artists like Vogt, Jacobi and Raphael - who was trained at the Berlin Academy- that German influences were introduced to Canadian painting.

[ CANADIAN ART ] WILLIAM RAPHAEL (1933-1914) HABITANT, HORSE AND SLEIGH signed; titled in both English and French on a label on the reverse oil on canvas, laid down on board laid down on masonite 47 by 77.5 cm. 18.5 by 30.5 in. Raphael was the first professional Jewish artist in Canada. Although he did portraits and still lifes, he was known primarily as a painter of habitant and First Nations genre scenes. Habitant, Horse and Sleigh reflects both the legacy of his European training and his roots in the German Romantic tradition. Raphael was a founder of the Royal Canadian Academy and an important exhibitor in the 1880s and 1890s. Many of his works were reproduced in Lucius O'Brien's magnum opus Picturesque Canada.
