Charles (1907-1978) & Ray Eames (1912-1988) Charles Eames (1907-1978) studied at the Washington University in St. Louis and opened his first architecture office in 1930. In 1940, he won the ‘Organic Design in Home Furnishings’-Competition of the MOMA in New York and was named head of the Industrial Design Department of the Cranbrook Academy of Art the same year. He married his second wife Ray (1912-1988) in 1941, and they became one of the most known and popular design couples of the 20th century. Their designs for Hermann Miller, for whom they designed complete product lines, were new, unusual and most of them are design milestones. Vitra (est. 1950) The success story of the 1950 founded company started with the acquisition of production licenses for the furniture of Charles and Ray Eames. In 1953, the founders Willi and Erika Fehlbaum came across with their designs during a trip to the United States. The production rights for other well-known designers such as George Nelson and Isamu Noguchi could be acquired in the course of the negotiations. 1963 was followed by the close cooperation with Verner Panton, which resulted in the legendary ‘Panton Chair’. With the realization of innovative designs, Vitra panned out the production of numerous design classics. Those can be seen also on the Vitra campus, in the company’s museum completed in 1989.
