Still life with fish, cuttlefish and sea urchins oil on canvas, cm. 73x99; in a fine period gilt and carved wood frame On a rocky surface in front of a coastal landscape at sunset appears a rich composition of fish of various species (some collected in a basket), cuttlefish and sea urchins. The light is concentrated on the foreground, isolating the elements in a highly selective, grazing light. The rendering of the humid surfaces, the shiny scales and the soft flesh of the cuttlefish, as well as the minute description of the sea urchins, consistently refers to Giuseppe Recco's specialization in the genre of marine still life, in particular in compositions with fish and crustaceans. The most stringent comparison is with the "Still life with cuttlefish, fish, lobster and basket of oysters" of the Municipal Art Gallery of Faenza, dated between 1680 and 1695: we find similar typologies of subjects (fish, cuttlefish, seafood), similar setting on a lowered plane with a dark background and above all a pictorial writing characterized by short and vibrating touches that riddle the fish with tiny lights creating a very dense luminous texture on the surfaces, one of the most recognizable features of Recco. The quality of the drafting, the coherence with the language of the painter, trained in a family specialized in still lifes with fish and kitchens and already recognized in the eighteenth century as one of the greatest exponents of Neapolitan still life alongside Giovanni Battista Ruoppolo, and the close affinity with the Faenza canvas, unanimously accepted as autograph, significantly support the attribution of the present work to Giuseppe Recco and suggest a dating in full maturity, between the Seventies and Eighties of the seventeenth century.

Formatosi nella bottega familiare, il pittore si dedicò prevalentemente alla produzione di genere ma i documenti parlano altresì di scene figurate anche a fresco, fermo restando che celebri e richieste erano le nature morte che descrivevano con straordinaria verosimiglianza pesci, molluschi e interni di cucina. A tal proposito, fu nella piena maturità che creò eleganti composizioni dedicate alla fauna ittica, comunemente presentate su ripiani o scogli marini con straordinaria intensità visiva. Sono anni in cui l'artista giunge a soluzioni di notevole eleganza formale, emancipandosi dal vigoroso naturalismo desunto dal padre guardando agli esempi di Paolo Porpora, della cultura romana e spingendosi ad influenze di carattere nordico. A questi anni, intorno al 1660, si colloca la tela in esame, che esprime al meglio le qualità espressive del pittore che poté fregiarsi nel 1671 del titolo di cavaliere. A confronto si ricorda la Natura morta con pesci e tartaruga su uno scoglio anch'essa custodita a Capodimonte, Pesci e crostacei e Pesci e conchiglie del Museo di Besançon, opere accomunate dalla visione ravvicinata e da una raffinata padronanza nell'esprimere la piena comunione tra il naturalismo di primo Seicento e l'esuberanza dell'estetica barocca. Per quanto riguarda il supporto, l'impiego della carta non era inusuale per l'esecuzione di bozzetti o opere in piccolo destinate ai collezionisti, come si evince altresì dalla piccola natura morta attribuita a Giovanni Battista Recco (cfr. Measurements: 46 x 73 cm; 66.5 x 94 cm (frame). This painting belongs to the Neapolitan environment of the seventeenth century, and can be placed within the circle of Giuseppe Recco, one of the most eminent representatives of the Italian Baroque still life. In this still life, the treatment of light, which falls on the organic surfaces of the fruit and the sausage, as well as on the fur of the ram's head, generates a tenebrist atmosphere of notable contrast, characteristic of the late Caravaggism that so influenced Neapolitan painting. Giuseppe Recco's training was linked to his family, who were also engaged in painting. It is believed that his artistic education began in Lombardy. His work is characterized by a naturalistic language, linked to tenebrism and hallmarks of color, especially focused on the theme of still life, in which he explored a great multiplicity of elements. Throughout his artistic career, he worked for numerous Spanish nobles and vierres who were in Naples; this work led him to be requested by Charles II, however, he died on the trip to Spain. ighly appreciated within the antiquarian market, as well as among collectors and art historians, the Neapolitan still life school of the Baroque enjoyed a spectacular development, leaving behind the splendors of the sixteenth century and progressing within a fully Baroque and clearly identifiable style. Artists such as Tommaso Realfonso, Nicola Casissa, Gaspare Lopez, Giacomo Nani and Baldassare de Caro continued the local tradition by specializing in the painting of flowers, fruits, fish and game, thus satisfying the demand of a vast clientele characterized by a new taste typical of the 17th century. To these authors must also be added the minor figures, who are slowly emerging from an unjust oblivion, and some artists who worked between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, such as Francesco della Questa, Aniello Ascione, Nicola Malinconico, Gaetano Cusati, Onofrio Loth, Elena and Nicola Maria Recco, Giuseppe Ruoppolo and Andrea Belvedere. These Neapolitan still life painters, who worked during the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, are called "i generisti", and were important not only within their own environment but also, and especially, in Spain, where the development of the genre was clearly marked by Italian influence, specifically by the contribution of the Neapolitan school.

This striking still life presents a carefully arranged assortment of marine fish, laid upon a rough stone surface, dramatically lit against a dark background. The composition is both restrained and powerful, emphasizing the tactile qualities of the subject: metallic scales, glassy eyes, and the moist texture of the flesh are rendered with exquisite realism. A vivid red fish in the foreground draws the viewer’s eye, its vibrant hue standing out against the cooler tones and somber background. The lighting, cast laterally across the composition, carves out the forms with a refined Baroque sensibility, demonstrating masterful command of chiaroscuro. This work shares strong stylistic affinities with confirmed paintings by Giuseppe Recco, such as the Still Life with Fish and Crustaceans (Capodimonte Museum, Naples) and the Still Life with Fish (Faenza Pinacoteca). The paternity of the flower frames, as well as in the signature, is confirmed in the typical style of the most famous of the Reccos, here evident in the very realistic and still life-like rendering of the different species of flowers of various colors translated into infinite shades, in the tactile evocation of the petals with a silky consistency, on which the drops of water sprinkled to revive the fresh flowers, just picked and woven into a sumptuous garland, shine. The elegance and truth of the faces with their red cheeks, the thin and luminous line, the lively and vibrant brush stroke especially in the brightly colored draperies that light up the scene in the foreground, entrusting the depth of the backgrounds to the shaded shadow, recall the intimate compositions of Domenico Gargiulo, who had often frequented these subjects in his canvases such as the Adoration of the Shepherds preserved at the National Museum and Certosa di San Martino or the two versions of the Adoration of the Magi in a private collection (see exhibition cat. Ritorno al Barocco, 2009, vol. II, nos. 1.109, 1.110, pp. 216-219), all works dated between the end of the 1650s and the beginning of the 1660s).The presence of references to Luca Giordano's style in the figures attributed to Spadaro here leads one to believe that the canvases under discussion here can also be placed in the 1660s, therefore in a mature phase of Gargiulo's activity, in the years in which contacts with Giordano were more frequent (the collaboration between the two for the church of Santa Maria Regina Coeli dates back to 1664, see G. Sestieri - B. Daprà, Domenico Gargiulo detto Micco Spadaro, Milan-Rome 1994, p. 46). The dating also coincides well with the artistic path of Giuseppe Recco, who in the 1660s had by now achieved a certain notoriety and was well established in the Neapolitan artistic panorama, managing to obtain the first prestigious commissions.The signature 'Gios. Recco' is statistically more frequent in the works of his early maturity, between the 1860s and the early 1870s.Giuseppe Recco's collaboration with Micco Spadaro, so far not identified in other compositions, could have been favored by Giordano himself, with whom Giuseppe Recco had established an artistic and commercial partnership since he was young, being able to obtain through him the contacts of clients, merchants, agents and other artists.The presence of Giuseppe Recco's signature and the absence of that of the author of figures raises two considerations: it could be an indication of a desire for accreditation on the market by the younger painter of still lifes who had been able to avail himself of the collaboration of one of the most illustrious Neapolitan painters of the first half of the seventeenth century; however, it could also be a sign of the substantial equality of the genres of painting in which the author of still lifes was in this case even prevalent.

Natura in posa, Napoli 2011, pp. 288-289, n. 334 La data 1686 attesta che il dipinto è una delle ultime creazioni napoletane dell'artista prima del trasferimento in Spagna, dettato dall'invito di Carlo II d'Asburgo. La scena presenta una sontuosa presenza di elementi floreali e frutti, testimoniando la piena adesione alla moderna enfasi barocca intrapresa dall'artista a partire dal settimo decennio. Questa nuova spazialità offre l'occasione di creare contesti narrativi più complessi e ariosi dove inserire brani figurativi di grande formato. A questo proposito sono infatti note le collaborazioni con Luca Giordano e Francesco Solimena, ma in questo caso, come suggerisce Nicola Spinosa, il pittore sembra avvalersi della mano di Angelo Solimena, cosicché l'opera testimonia un nuovo e importantissimo tassello alla conoscenza dei frequenti ma ancor nebulosi rapporti tra i pittori di figura e di natura morta durante il tardo Seicento. È comunque significativo che questa apertura nei confronti di nuove scenografie preceda una produzione di opere figurative realizzate in Spagna intorno al 1695, come la Morte di San Giuseppe e l'Assunzione di Maria, appartenenti alla collezione Arenaza di Malaga, ma provenienti dalla Nunziatura Apostolica dove secondo Pérez Sánchez (1965, p. 426) si conserverebbero altri suoi dipinti a tema religioso. Tuttavia questa apertura barocca si deve certamente all'influenza del Giordano, anche se l'artista pare respingere l'addolcimento del tonalismo, lo sgranarsi dorato delle superfici, il giuoco della vibrazione cromatica dell'insieme, così distante dagli eroici modelli di tanti illustri predecessori (Causa), ma lo vediamo comunque cedere alle vistose innovazioni, come se consapevole della carriera e del mutare dei tempi, richiedesse un ulteriore passo avanti e la necessità di misurarsi con se stesso e con la modernità. In this canvas the author offers us a still life rooted in the baroque tradition of the genre, as much for its composition as for the chromatic and light treatment, the care of the qualities and the precise and detailed brushstroke reveal the mastery of the author. As was the case with many of the Baroque painters, especially the Dutch, here we see the elements that make up the still life arranged in a disorganized, although clear, on a flat surface that runs parallel to the lower margin of the painting. Moreover, following this same tradition, the still life is placed in the foreground, on a neutral and dark background that delimits the space, focusing our gaze on what the painter considers most important. While during the first half of the century the still life is orderly and clear, with a classicist aesthetic, the works of the second half of the century present very different characteristics, the result of the stylistic evolution towards the full baroque, leaving behind the dominant classicism of the beginning of the century. In works such as the one presented here, the taste for naturalism is maintained, which leads the author to meticulously describe not only the details, but also to transmit their different tactile qualities. The style of the work belongs to an aesthetic defined within the artistic circle of the painter Giuseppe Recco, who was one of the most influential still life painters in Naples. His training was linked to his family, who were also dedicated to painting, it is believed that his artistic education began in Lombardy. Nella sua vasta produzione si occupò in particolare di nature morte con pesci e crostacei, sulla scia di Giacomo e Paolo Porpora. Sia pur di carattere arcaico, la rappresentazione esibisce una vitalità descrittiva di sapore barocco ed esiti quanto mai prossimi alle nature in posa del pittore napoletano. La composizione tradisce altresì un'intensa sensibilità spagnoleggiante, in analogia con le bodegones di Alejandro de Loarte e di Juan Sánchez Cotán. La regia luministica tenebrosa indaga i diversi oggetti evidenziando e sagomando le forme, evocando sapientemente le superfici con una mimesi singolare. La luce che scorre e modella, misura lo spazio scenico e prospettico, creando un fortissimo senso realistico avvalorato dal fondale scuro che accentua la concretezza tangibile.

\“Inspiegabilmente pubblicato per la prima volta da Vincenzo Pacelli (in Pittura del 600 nelle collezioni napoletane, Grimaldi & C. School of GIUSEPPE RECCO (Naples, 1634 - Alicante, 1695). "Spider crab". Oil on canvas. It has a 19th century frame. Measurements: 30 x 50 cm; 39 x 57 cm (frame). In spite of the few elements that are portrayed in the work, all of them are treated with mastery reflecting the special qualities. Normally, images of crustaceans are presented in the form of still lifes. However, in this work the spider crab is the absolute protagonist, not as a still life that forms part of a larger whole, but still alive in the sea that lightly covers its legs. Both the subject matter and the aesthetic are highly reminiscent of the painting of Giacomo Recco, who was born in Naples and was probably apprenticed to his family, his father Giacomo Recco and his uncle Giovan Battista Recco. He later perfected his technique with Paolo Porpora, who had been his father's pupil. During a stay in Lombardy from 1644 to 1654 with his uncle, he was influenced by the works of Evaristo Baschenis. As his fame spread, King Charles II invited him to travel to Spain. His style is often compared to that of Giovan Battista Ruoppolo, who was also a pupil of Porpora. Early in his career he moved from painting flowers to more varied assemblages and was one of the first Italian painters to do so. Recco may have died in Alicante, Spain, before arriving in Madrid, although contemporary sources indicate that he lived there for seven years and became a Knight of the Order of Calatrava.

Recco Still life painting in 17th century Naples had a very particular style and was a visible expression of the culture of southern Italy, which, due to contemporary political circumstances, combined Italian and Spanish traditions. Alongside the venerable and more renowned genre of narrative painting, a preference for still life painting developed among artists born shortly after 1600. Some of the main driving forces behind this trend were Luca Forte, Paolo Porpora, the Flanders-born Abraham Brueghel, and the brothers Giovanni Battista and Giuseppe Recco. Their favourite motifs were fish and seafood, fruits and vegetables, and to a lesser extent, flowers. These paintings came into the possession of noble families and served as coveted collectibles and furnishings for their urban palaces and rural villas. Neapolitan still life painting is characterized primarily by striking chiaroscuro effects and thus often has an almost nocturnal character. The two paintings presented here – conspicuously signed and monogrammed respectively by Giuseppe Recco in the lower centre - come from the property of the Lazzari D'Aloisio family (as shown by a label and varnish seal on the reverse). The works share the same dimensions and are both housed in the original identical carved giltwood frames. Nevertheless, it is uncertain whether they were actually created as counterparts. The differing placement of the vases would speak against this assumption. Striking again for both pictures is the simple, almost Spanish archaism of the compositions, which may have been requested specifically by the patron according to their personal taste.
