Edward Willis Redfield Sold at Auction Prices

Landscape painter, b. 1869 - d. 1965

(b Bridgeville, DE, 1869; d 1965) American Painter.Like many of his contemporaries in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Redfield studied extensively at some of the finest art schools in the world. After his early training at The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts under Thomas Anschutz, Redfield went to Paris to receive further training at the Académie Julian in the late 1880s or early 1890s. Accompanied by Robert Henri, an old friend from his days at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Redfield traveled from Paris to the French countryside and the forest of Fountainbleau where he painted en plein air in the cold of winter. Redfield's impressive experiences in the French country provided him with a new interest in landscape painting, as well as a new approach to painting that would last a lifetime. It was during these early years that he established his niche as a "one go" artist, saying, "I go into the field with my 50 pounds of equipment and a 50 x 56 canvas, and do not leave until I have completed my work." Fletcher, Edward Willis Redfield, An American Impressionist 1869-1965: The Redfield Letters, Vol. I, Lahaska, Pennsylvania, 2002, p. 206, no. 162 (illustrated).  Lot Essay This painting will be included in the forthcoming Catalogue Raisonné of Edward Redfield's work being compiled by Dr. Thomas Folk. In 1903, Edward Redfield was advised by one of his leading patrons, Dr. Samuel Woodward, to travel to Maine for the summer. While the first trip was generously financed by his friend, Redfield and his wife would return on their own to the charming village of Boothbay Harbor, where they eventually bought a house for their family. The appeal for Maine was not new, as many artists had visited the wild region since the mid-1800s, some even establishing an artist colony on the picturesque and remote Monhegan Island. For Redfield, Maine offered a drastic change of scenery. Miles away from Centre Bridge, Pennsylvania, the artist would explore the rugged hills, shallow beaches, and picturesque fishing villages. Maine provided Redfield with the liberating opportunity to capture untouched, raw forms of life unique to the northern seacoast. Executed en plein air, Snug Harbor exudes the simple and peaceful way of life in Maine, and features many local aspects that Redfield has already introduced in earlier, similar subjects such as Peaceful Harbor and Monhegan Home, namely the typical and austere cedar shake fisherman house by the beach, the docked boat and fishing equipment in the foreground, the grassy and rugged hills in the distance, and most importantly, the vast expanse of the sea, here captured on a sunny day in shimmering hues of yellow, green, blue and purple on which the colorful boats rock. The painting, jolly and peaceful, conveys a sense of anonymity as no human figure is in sight, and overall tranquility: summer, at last, is here.

Literature Dorothy Redfield, "Paintings Distributed to Heirs, After the Bucks County Conservancy Exhibition," in The Edward Willis Redfield Estate Journal, June 19-July 6, 1975. Lot Essay After graduating from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1889, Redfield traveled to Paris to continue his studies, both at the École des Beaux-Arts and the Académie Julian. Redfield's time in France deepened his appreciation for Impressionism, and inspired him to paint en plein air, which he would continue to do, and inspire others to do, after his return to America.  Coast of France possibly depicts the rocky shore of Boulogne, which had been painted earlier by Édouard Manet, one of Redfield's artistic heroes. The craggy hillside rises away from the surf and anchors the scene. A solitary woman disrupts the landscape as she is walking along a narrow, curving path–the dark folds of her skirt are repeated in the shadows and crevices of the rocks clustered in the foreground. Redfield's signature thick, broad brushstrokes spread across the hazy sky and wild, overgrown grass blanketing the hills. It is a cloudy day. The horizon has disappeared, the calm water of the English channel rises to meet the expanse of sky and form an overall muted, grey atmosphere. The scene is tinted with an almost melancholic air, a dramatic departure from the artist's usually light-infused landscapes set in Bucks County. From 1898 and into the early years of the 20th century, Redfield visited France often, with his French wife Élise Deligant. These trips are undocumented after 1898. According to Dr. Thomas Folk, the signature, with capital letters is a 20th-century Redfield signature, rather than a late-19th-century one. This painting must have been a favorite of the artist, as he exhibited it several times, especially in his early career. It may have had some sentimental value to him, as he never sold it, and it later became part of his Estate at the time of his death in 1965. This painting will be included in the forthcoming Catalogue Raisonné of Edward Redfield's work being compiled by Dr. Thomas Folk.

Acquired directly from the above.  By descent in the family, c. 1970. Private Collection, Pennsylvania.  Exhibition “Exhibition of Paintings and Crafts by Edward W. Redfield,” The Woodmere Art Gallery (now Museum), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, November 1-22, 1959.  Literature J.M.W. Fletcher, Edward Willis Redfield, 1869-1965: An American Impressionist, His Paintings and the Man Behind the Palette, Lahaska, Pennsylvania, 1996, p. 195, no. 1038 (listed as ‘Winter Holidays’, not illustrated). Lot Essay This painting will be included in the forthcoming Catalogue Raisonné of Edward Redfield's work being compiled by Dr. Thomas Folk. Winter Holiday offers a view of the Centre Bridge region of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, just north of New Hope, where Redfield moved with his wife, Elise, in 1898. A narrow path—a compositional device employed regularly by the artist—leads viewers’ eyes from foreground to middle ground; beyond, the Delaware River flows diagonally to the picture plane. Bare trees flank the path on either side, their leafless branches granting a near unobstructed view of the river valley. True to fashion, Redfield renders the scene in thick, muscular brushstrokes. Icy blues, earthy browns, and a backdrop of mauve-colored hills suggest an appreciation for both site and season. Redfield's mastery lies in his ability to translate the harshness of winter into a celebration of nature's beauty and resilience, transforming what could be a desolate scene into a lively vision of outdoor recreation. A pair of figures, sleds in tow, take advantage of the region’s undulating topography and a mantle of freshly fallen snow. One of the figures, further downhill, offers a cheery greeting to a group of fellow revelers. Redfield imbues the scene with a palpable energy, as if to confirm the potential for life and movement in otherwise still winter landscapes. The effects of sunlight on snow affords the painting a luminous quality, while adding both depth and dimension. As was Redfield’s custom, Winter Holiday was likely executed en plein air. This technique allowed him to engage closely with the landscapes and locations he loved, and to cultivate a sense of narrative within his works. The human presence within the present painting adds an element of storytelling to the scene, inviting viewers to engage not only with the visual beauty of the landscape but also with the activities unfolding within it. Redfield's winter views capture the essence of the season and demonstrate his commitment to conveying the emotional and narrative complexities of the rural American experience in the early years of the 20th century.

In 1898, Edward Redfield and his wife moved from Glenside, Pennsylvania to the Belle Island Farm in Centre Bridge, just five miles north of New Hope, along the Delaware River and canal. The bucolic region became the artist's most favored subject; one he captured every season from his studio in Point Pleasant. In a 1929 interview, the artist confessed the region’s powerful, almost mystical, hold over him: "There is a real 'church': go there at sundown and watch the changing colors in earth and sky and water. It is a place to worship." Of all the vistas Redfield produced, his Spring scenes appear amongst the most powerful, and sought-after works, as evidenced by Spring Veil, one of the largest canvases Redfield ever painted – a mythical oil largely reproduced and exhibited, which Redfield liked so much that he kept it his entire life. Executed en plein-air, "at one go" for about seven continuous hours, Spring Veil depicts in thick and short brushstrokes a plunging view of the Delaware River in full bloom. The scene abounds with brightness and life. Redfield's familiarity with landscape painting, the large scale of the canvas, paired with his bold and swift application of paint through colorful and contrasting hues, are able to convey the bursting and reinvigorating feeling of spring, and tempt the viewer to walk right into the picture plane and enjoy the warmth of a peaceful, sunny day. Redfield started to paint his first Spring scenes in Point Pleasant in the 1910s. Contrary to earlier canvases of the same subject such as Spring at Point Pleasant on the Delaware Valley (sold at Freeman’s on June 14, 2020) which incorporated picturesque details of Bucks County’s rural daily life such as a farmer, or animals, the present work seems to make Spring its sole subject, so lush, abundant and luscious that the main tree at center – the true vertical of the entire composition - in fact obstructs much of the view of the downtown habitations and river, barely noticeable through touches of turquoise spread out across the horizon line. Here, Redfield attains maturity, and puts his vigorous impasto to the service of the painting, which becomes less narrative but gains in expressivity, and bravura. The artist composes an all-surface pattern that enhances the immediacy of the scene, prompting the viewer to lose sight of its specific facts and instead dive into a mesmerizing abstract composition - one of the artist's boldest and more modern depictions of spring. In doing so, Redfield permeates the canvas with his own personality and charisma - a robust, masculine energy that impressed his peers as much as it stunted them, and which he puts at the service of the greater American Art, making Spring Veil a perfect example of what a real American landscape, miles away from the western canyons and mountain ranges, can look and feel like: grand, serene, and bold.

Redfield ," Public Schools of Bucks County, Unit 3, Doylestown, Pennsylvania, 1947, n.p. (as Carversville). Edward Redfield is regarded as the dean of the New Hope School of painters, centered around the historic mill town of New Hope, on the Delaware River in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The artist's painterly views of the Delaware River basin and its surrounding scenery tapped a well of national pride in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and his large-scale canvases depicting the Bucks County landscape rank among the finest and most esteemed examples of American Impressionism. Among the contemporary admirers of Redfield's canvases was his fellow artist Guy Péne du Bois, who wrote in 1915, "the Pennsylvania school of landscape painters, whose leader is Edward W. Redfield, is our first truly national expression. It began under the influence of the French Impressionists. It has restricted itself patriotically to the painting of the typical American landscape." (As quoted in T. Folk, Edward Redfield, Allentown, Pennsylvania, 1987, p. 36) In works such as the present example, Redfield developed a unique and direct manner of plein air painting that built on the legacy of his French Impressionist predecessors, but one which contemporary audiences and art critics found fresh, innovative and inspiring. His technique of thick long brushstrokes was much more muscular than the feathery, abbreviated strokes of his French peers. Redfield built up his surfaces with multiple layers of pigment, creating a rich impasto that was textured and dimensional. He painted his large canvases in a single outdoor session, in order to capture the fleeting effects of sunlight, shadow, and their interplay among the trees, streams, and hills, sometimes strapping his canvas to a tree on blustery days and standing knee-deep in snow. It was this sense of immediacy and vigor, along with a particular pride of place, that were the distinct hallmarks of Redfield's legacy. Born in Delaware, Edward Redfield, like many of his contemporaries, received artistic training both at home and abroad. After his studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts from 1887 to 1889, Redfield departed for Paris to receive further training at the Académie Julian. During these years he traveled to the French countryside accompanied by Robert Henri. In the forest of Fountainebleu Redfield learned to paint en plein air, our out-of-doors, commencing a lifelong preference for this novel manner of painting. Upon returning to the States in 1893, Redfield continued the plein air tradition in his renderings of the landscapes of Buck's County. The Brook at Carversville features a favorite compositional style for Redfield; that of a foreground creek winding into th

Note The present work will be included in the forthcoming Catalogue Raisonné of Edward Redfield's works being compiled by Dr. Thomas Folk. In 1898, Edward Redfield and his wife Elise moved from Glenside, PA to the Belle Island Farm in Centre Bridge, just five miles north of New Hope, along the Delaware River and canal. The bucolic region became the artist's most favored subject; one he captured in every season from his studio in Point Pleasant. Redfield started to set numerous spring scenes there in the 1910s, thus showing an early attachment to the locale, further confirmed in a 1929 interview during which the artist confessed: "there is a real 'church': go there at sundown and watch the changing colors in earth and sky and water. it is a place to worship." Executed en plein-air, "at one go," the present scene depicts in thick and short brushstrokes the titular narrow dirt road leading to the river, seen in the distance. The path itself is a recurring compositional device used by Redfield, and often placed in the foreground to convey a sense of immediacy and ultimately invite the viewer to penetrate the picture plane and experience a vision "full of lush air and running water and breeze," as described by Albert Sterner who was awestruck when he first discovered one of Redfield's similar "brave blossom pictures." The dashes of verdant greens and sand tones in the foreground successfully complement the white and pink buds of the cherry trees on the sides, and together form a bright symphony of colors. The scene abounds with brightness and life. Redfield applied paint very quickly, leaving some areas of the canvas completely bare. Such a trait further confirms that the artist never sketched his work, using his initial impulse toward the canvas to express the rawness and the energy of spring. Frame: 35 3/4 x 44 x 2 1/2 in. The relined canvas in excellent condition, with no sign of inpainting as seen under UV light. With a nicely preserved impasto throughout, especially in the cherry blossoms. Some parts of the canvas are bare (see, for example, at upper right quadrant surrounding the tree branches): this is part of the artist's working method, and not a sign of abrasions or loss. See specialist's pictures for more details.

CONTACT US Edward Willis Redfield (Pennsylvania, Delaware, 1869 - 1965) Born in Bridgeville, Delaware, Edward Redfield moved to Philadelphia as a youngster and lived much of his life near New Hope in Bucks County, an easy distance north of Philadelphia. There he became the leader of the colony of artists known as the New Hope Impressionists. In modified Impressionist style and methods, he did many landscapes, especially panoramic snowscenes of the area, and used thick paint applied to large canvases with long brush strokes instead of the feathery strokes of true French Impressionism. He usually finished his paintings in "one go" meaning plein-air, sometimes strapping his canvas to a tree on blustery days and standing knee-deep in snow. In the summers, he painted at Boothbay Harbor, Maine. He was also a teacher at the Pennsylvania Academy and a skilled craftsman who built his own house, cabinets and restored antiques. Redfield took his early training from a Mr. Rolf in order to pass the examination at the Pennsylvania Academy, where he studied from 1885 to 1889 under teachers including Thomas Anschutz, James Kelley, and Thomas Hovenden. A fellow student was Robert Henri, with whom he developed a strong friendship, and with whom he traveled to Paris in 1889. In Paris, he studied at the Academie Julian and the Ecole des Beaux Arts and his teachers were Adolphe Bouguereau and Tony Robert-Fleury. However, he wearied of the pervasive academic styles at these schools, and spent much time painting landscapes in the Forest of Fountainbleu outside of Paris. He also painted at Barbizon and Pont-Aven. Married, he and his wife returned to Pennsylvania in 1898 and decided to settle in Center Bridge in Bucks County near New Hope. His presence in Bucks County was enough to lure many younger artists to the region making it a nucleus for the American Impressionist movement. Holding a special affection for this man, author and fellow-Pennsylvanian James Michener wrote that Redfield "had a cluttered workshop on the canal in which he did large landscapes, especially snow scenes, and made furntiture and delightfully desinged hooked rugs. I liked his work, and I liked him, a big Russian-bear kind of man." (Folk 10) He exhibited extensively throughout the country and abroad, and won an impressive array of awards, including a Bronze medal, Paris Exposition (1900); Bronze Medal, Pan-American Exposition (1901); Temple Medal (1903), Jennie Sesnan Gold Medal (1904), Gold Medal of Honor (1907), Lippincott Prize (1912), and Stotesbury prize (1920), all from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; Silver medal (1904), St. Louis Exposition; Fischer Prize and Gold Medal (1908) form the Corcoran Art Gallery, Washington, D.C.; Honorable Mention (1908) and Third Class Medal (1909), Paris Salon; Palmer Gold Medal (1913), Chicago Art Institute; Hors Concous Prize (1915), Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco; Carnegie Prize (1918), Altman Prize (1919), and Saltus Medal (1927), National Academy of Design. His paintings are included in numerous museums and public collections throughout the country, such as the Boston Museum of Art, Brooklyn Art Institute, Carnegie Institute, Chicago Art Institute, Corcoran Gallery, Los Angeles Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Gallery of Art, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Towards the end of his life, he burned hundreds of paintings that he regarded as inferior. He died in 1965 in Center Bridge, Pennsylvania, and his work received little attention during the decade following his death. However, he has come to be regarded as a key American Impressionist and appreciated for his influence at New Hope.

AD: ART CONSIGNMENTS WANTED.

  • EDWARD WILLIS REDFIELD (AMERICAN, 1869–1965) MAINE SQUALL
    Dec. 05, 2021

EDWARD WILLIS REDFIELD (AMERICAN, 1869–1965) MAINE SQUALL

    Est: $60,000 - $100,000

Edward Willis Redfield (American, 1869–1965) Maine Squall Dedicated, signed and dated 'To Mattie/E.W.Redfield/1948' bottom left, oil on canvas 26 1/4 x 32 1/8 in. (66.7 x 81.6cm) In a Frederick Harer frame. Provenance Private Collection, Pennsylvania. Acquired directly from the above. Private Collection, New Jersey. Footnote: Note In 1903, Edward Redfield and his wife, Elise, started summering in Boothbay Harbor and Monhegan Island, Maine. With its rugged hills and shallow beaches, Maine's landscape provided Redfield the liberating opportunity to explore and capture untouched forms of nature unique to the northern seacoast. The seascapes Redfield painted in Maine during this period are considered among his best works. They reflect his ferocious painterly method with rapid, spontaneous brushstrokes echoing the artist's energy. Robert Henri, who often joined the Redfields in Maine, noted the impression the artist had on local inhabitants, "slinging the paint over big canvases, astounding the natives and astounding the local artists with his rapidity as well as his results..." Painted circa 1930s, the present work depicts an agitated sea along the rugged shoreline, with what appears to be Monhegan Island in the distance, where Redfield often stayed and in fact painted several canvases. Here the artist builds up paint with multiple layers of thick pigment to indicate a change in the weather and the upcoming storm, as revealed by the menacing clouds in the background and the already-pouring rain at upper right. The result is a rich impastoed texture reminiscent of the artist's earlier snow scenes set in Bucks County. Through lively and rigorous brushstrokes, Redfield infuses a sense of power to the scene, indicating an ongoing fascination with the ever-changing elements. Vividly colored rocks in the foreground provide a strong contrast with the pastel-blue sky and the water's whitecaps in the background, producing a well-balanced jewel-toned work celebrating Maine's so distinct landscape, and capricious weather. Condition report: Frame: 34 x 40 x 2 1/2 in. The unlined canvas in overall very good (close to excellent) original condition. Loight craquelure at upper right (very faint). Examination under UV light reveals small dots of inpainting along left outer edge of the canvas, at center mostly (in the sky, sea and top of the rocks) as well as at upper right. See Specialist's pictures.

  • EDWARD WILLIS REDFIELD (AMERICAN, 1869–1965) ABANDONED ROAD
    Dec. 05, 2021

EDWARD WILLIS REDFIELD (AMERICAN, 1869–1965) ABANDONED ROAD

    Est: $120,000 - $180,000

Edward Willis Redfield (American, 1869–1965) Abandoned Road Signed 'E.W. REDFIELD' bottom right; also titled and signed on upper stretcher verso, oil on canvas 28 x 32 in. (71.1 x 81.3cm) Executed circa 1925. Provenance Jim's of Lambertville, Lambertville, New Jersey. Acquired directly from the above in 2006. Private Collection, Carversville, Pennsylvania. Footnote: Note Executed at the height of the artist's career in the mid-1920s, Abandoned Road (presented here at auction for the first time) captures a crisp, beautiful winter's day in the countryside after a snowstorm has passed. As a horse-drawn sleigh glides down a narrow snow-covered path, the gentle flow of a nearby stream stretches into the distance. Unlike the artist's typically muted winter scenes (see Lots 65 and 79), this work bursts with life through warm, vivid colors and a bold, lush impasto that recalls the energy typically at play in Redfield's spring scenes. Here, the dazzling blue sky contrasts beautifully with the white patches of snow in the foreground, while the brilliant yellow and lime green foliage of the trees dots the canvas with a vibrancy that suggests the long-awaited end of winter and the swift return to life. Condition report: Frame: 39 1/4 x 43 x1/4 x 2 1/2 in. The unlined canvas in excellent original condition, with a superb, beautifully-preserved impasto throughout. Examination under UV light does not reveal any sign of inpainting. We notice some parts of the canvas are bare (untouched), especially in the foliage: this is part of the artist's working method, and not a sign of abrasions. With a very slight ripple in the canvas upper right corner.
