For a time he worked with his father who was an engraver before entering the Royal Academy in 1825. He began by painting historical genre in 18th century costume but in the 1840s he was among the first to depict contemporary social subjects in contemporary clothing ("The Seamstress", "Bad News from the Sea", "The Governess"). In 1836 he finally gained wider audience with his painting of "Gulliver on the Farmer's Table". Redgrave was involved with the organization of the Government School of Design (1847) as well as the first keeper of paintings at the South Kensington Museum (now known as the Victoria and Albert Museum). He was Inspector of the Queen's Pictures and co-author with his brother Samuel of "A Century of Painters of the English School", still a valuable book on English art. Redgrave exhibited some 175 works at the Royal Academy from 1824-1883, the British Institution, the Society of British Artists and others. Retiring from his many offices in 1880 due to ill health, Redgrave's later work was mostly painted while summering at his country house, primarily landscapes painted in a pre-Raphaelite style. Following the funeral, it was for many years stored in the crypt at St Paul's, being transferred to Stratfield Saye in 1981. Following Wellington's death at Walmer Castle on 14th September 1852, aged 83, the original design for his hearse had been initially commissioned from the royal undertakers, Messrs. Ranting of St James. Their proposal was, however, rejected by the Earl Marshal, Henry Howard, 13th Duke of Norfolk, who was responsible for the ceremonial aspects of the funeral. The project then passed to the Department of Practical Art, where Henry Cole and Richard Redgrave collaborated on a new design alongside the German architect, Gottfried Semper. Richard Redgrave has left a detailed account of how this drawing came about: "At a meeting of the Etching Club on Monday last, the members were very abusive about the new Department of Practical Art...They made, too, a general attack on the Wellington Car, and spoke contemptuously of it, not much mending matters by saying, 'But what had you to do with it? It was Semper who designed it,' etc. Now, though Semper carried it out, the full design was mine. The following are the facts of the case:- Although the great Duke had been dead some time, and Ranting had shown the Prince Consort several designs for the car, made by a Frenchman, it was only on Thursday, Oct 22nd, that our Department was called upon for suggestions. I well recollect that, as Cole and I walked home together, we talked over the sort of carriage it should be (since a carriage was required), and we settled that the coffin should be upon a bier, and that this bier should be mounted on a suitable vehicle; no sham, such as the upholstery ones already alluded to, but a real substantial work; and we decided that it ought to be made of bronze. I made two pen-and-ink sketches on half a sheet of letter-paper, and showed them to Cole in the morning. They were for a solid six-wheeled carriage, with a design for a pall, the whole thoroughly simple, as was the chamber of the Duke, the only decorations being the pall, the armorial bearings of the deceased, his coronet and arms, and the names of his great battles. Cole thought the sketches satisfactory, and set Semper to make two more complete yet hasty designs from mine, during the day (Friday), as he proposed we should go to Windsor in the evening of Saturday, in order that no time might be lost. I was going out to our chess-meeting on Friday evening, but, in thinking over the changes which Semper had introduced into my idea during the day, I felt it was not improved, or, rather, that my idea of the matter was partially lost. As soon as I had dined, therefore, I gave up my party, and, setting to work, I made a larger sketch on tinted paper, which I still have, completing it by about eleven o'clock. During Saturday, Semper finished up his two sketches, and mounted them, and Cole and I took them with mine to Windsor, about 5.30 on Saturday afternoon. Cole told the Prince that he thought the finest thing would have been, to have carried the Duke up from Walmer by soldiers, making several days' march of it; but he then showed first Semper's two sketches. The Prince looked at them, talked of those he had already seen (Ranting's), and listened attentively to our idea of making the car a solid, substantial thing, rather than a piece of upholstery. I then unrolled my little sketch, and the Prince at once said, 'This is the thing!'" (Richard Redgrave, CB, RA, a Memoir from his Diary by his Daughter, Miss F.M. Redgrave, 1891, pp.100-101). The final version follows the overall design of this drawing, although with the alteration of several details: for example, the putti were no doubt thought undignified and were banished, lions' heads were inserted into the wheel-bosses, the placing of the battle-inscriptions was altered, and the 'W' motif (perhaps overly Napoleonic) replaced by the Duke's crest and arms.

Property from a Private Collection, London GEORGE WILLIAM MOTE (BRITISH 1832-1909) Logging in a country vail oil on canvas 63 x 77 cm (24 3/4 x 30 1/4 in) PROVENANCE: Harold William Smith (1895-1984), grandfather of the present owner (acquired by the late 1930s. Smith was a painter and decorative artist born in Moseley, Birmingham. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and the RBSA, to which he was elected a member in 1938. One of his many decorative projects included a mural commission for Cadbury's Bournville factory.) Mote was self taught, and worked in his formative years as gardener to Sir Thomas Phillips of Middle Hall near Broadway in Worcestershire, one of the most acquisitive and eccentric bibliomanes in history. On leaving Sir Thomas's employ Mote subsequently painted full time, exhibiting regularly at the Royal Academy between 1857-73. The painter’s best and most characterful works, as in the present example, suggest some of the obsessive qualities that he almost certainly shared with the eccentric Sir Thomas. Mote's long appreciation for and understanding of nature instilled into him as a gardener is abundantly clear in the extraordinary high definition of the vegetation, which exhibits something of the fastidiousness of the style of Richard Dadd. Lovingly detailed, Mote clearly takes as much pleasure from painting every crevice of the nether regions of the uprooted tree as he does in portraying the forthright honesty of the game keeper. And his brush captures the surrounding vegetation, including dead wood, lichen, fungi, and leaves with a similarly knowing forensic intensity. More than being just an exquisitely observed bucolic country scene, however, the landscape suggests an underlying political message. In the meadow in the middle ground loggers have felled a numbered tree trunk that they are preparing to drag away, perhaps for use in the royal shipyards. Yet the massive form of the fallen oak in the foreground, similarly marked, seems to have come down of its own volition, the wood showing signs of infestation, canker and disease. In similar contrast, whilst the frank face of the gun toting game keeper surveys the viewer, hidden from his sight by the tree stump, a poacher steals a recently killed hare in broad daylight. And thrusting upwards on the right side, almost as high as the cultivated oak trees on the left, is a single wild thorny briar that flourishes insolently tall, as it stands proud against a clear blue sky. Mote’s incorporarion of visual metaphors into his composition, loaded with contemporary meaning, cleverly hint at the underlying political and social discontent of the day.
