Granville Redmond Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1871 - d. 1935

(b. March 9, 1871, Philadelphia, PA; d. May 24, 1935, Los Angeles, CA) American painter. At age two and a half, Granville Seymour Redmond contracted scarlet fever and was left permanently deaf and mute. His family moved to San Jose, California in 1874, and he attended the Institute for the Deaf, Dumb, and Blind at Berkley in 1879. During his schooling, he worked with deaf photographer Theophilus Hope d’Estrella, who recognized and encouraged his artistic abilities. Redmond went on to study art at the California School of Design in San Francisco and at the Academie Julian in Paris. In 1895, one of his large paintings, titled “Matin d’Hiver,” was accepted at the Salon. Returning from France in 1898, Redmond moved to Los Angeles where he opened his own studio. In 1899, Redmond married Carrie Ann Jean, also a deaf mute, and the couple had three children. From 1910 to 1917, Redmond spent time in northern California, painting the landscape and flowers that he loved. When Redmond returned to Los Angeles in 1917, he was interested in acting and became close friends with Charlie Chaplin. Between 1918 and 1929, Redmond had minor roles in several of Chaplin’s movies. Chaplin became a patron of Redmond’s work and gave him space on his movie lot to set up a painting studio. During Redmond’s career, he painted and lived throughout California, including the coast and is considered to have been one of America’s best Impressionist and landscape painters. He is renowned for his deep understanding and use of color; and depictions of California landscapes: poppies and lupines, rolling hills and seascapes.

Oil on Canvas Landscape - signed bottom right measures approx. 16" x 20" - Monterey California Care to preserve this painting is evident, it is re-lined and stretched and lives in a fine frame. Possibly from the period around 1908-1910 when Redmond was based in Monterey County, CA. The catalogue from the Oakland Museum's 1989 exhibition of Redmond's works says, of that period: “In April 1908, deciding it was time to recharge his energies, Redmond took his family north to Parkfield, Monterey County, where he had spent time on his uncle's ranch as a boy. The trip was supposed to last six months. They stayed for two-and-a-half years. Parkfield is and was a small community nestled among wheat and cattle ranches in the Cholame Valley between low rolling hills studded with live oaks and digger pines. Redmond settled his family in a tiny house on Turkey Flat Road not far from his Uncle Ed's ranch where he had spent many summers in his childhood and youth. Within six months he had thirty new canvases ready for a fall exhibit at the Kanst Gallery in Los Angeles. [Gottardo] Piazzoni joined Redmond for a month of painting and sketching in the summer of 1909. Both men loved the hills and valleys of the central part of coastal California since they were boys. [...] The two took time out from painting to pitch hay and bring in the harvest, perhaps playing the role of the absent peasants whom Piazzoni, a disciple of the Barbizon school, thought belonged in a rural landscape. [...] Redmond again had thirty paintings ready for another one-man show at the Kanst Gallery in September 1909.” The composition appeared similar to California Landscape (Oaks and Meadows), from 1904, cat. no. 13, which also shows a distant figure down a trail, and Evening, from 1910, cat. no. 29, which has the same provincial feel with its landscape of a rural home along a dirt road.
