Auction Date: Jul 18, 2021

Estimate: $1,500 - $2,000

Oil on Paper on CardBoard
Measure 8"in H x 10 1/2"in W and 15 3/4"in H x 17 1/4"in W with frame

Known for: Symbolism, charcoal drawing, religious painting
Biography: Odilon Redon was born in Bordeaux, France on April 20, 1840. He was the son of a French emigre who had struck it rich in New Orleans. Young Odilon was named for his Creole mother, Odile. He spent a sickly childhood at Peyrelebade, his father's estate in the Medoc. As an escape from loneliness, he turned to music, drawing and daydreams. Peyrelebade became a basic source of inspiration for all his art, providing him with both subjects from nature and a stimulus for his fantasies, and Redon returned there constantly until its enforced sale in 1897. Redon received his education in Bordeaux from 1851, rapidly showing talent in many art forms; he studied drawing with Stanislas Gorin from 1855. He also became an accomplished violinist. An indifferent scholar, he later tried and failed at architecture and sculpture, and lasted only briefly in academic painting classes. Not until he was thirty-five did he find his medium -- charcoal -- and then the lithographer's stone. He portrayed the strange creatures of his imagination; unfortunately he found a meager market for his work. Redon was a strange self-effacing painter of dreams and visions who perplexed his impressionist colleagues. Although he was a contemporary of such greats as Manet, Monet, Renoir, and Cezanne, he was out of step with his generation. By the turn of the century his dreams of terror gave way to a glowing world of pastels and oils. His favorite subjects were flowers and their fragile beauty. He died on July 6, 1916.

Redon, Odilon: Lutte de cavaliers

Lot 8474: Redon, Odilon: Lutte de cavaliers

Auction Date: Jun 12, 2021

Estimate: €3,600 - €4,500

Description: [*] Lutte de cavaliers Radierung und Kaltnadel auf Kupferdruckpapier. 1865. 10,1 x 13,6 cm (21,7 x 24,2 cm). Signiert "Odilon Redon". Mellerio 4, Harrison 3/III. Selten. - Literatur: Peter Morse, Foreword, in: The Etchings of Odilon Redon, a Catalogue Raisonne, Sharon R. Harrison, New York 1986 - Wir bitten darum, Zustandsberichte zu den Losen zu erfragen, da der Erhaltungszustand nur in Ausnahmefällen im Katalog angegeben ist. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue....

AFTER ODILON REDON: HEADS WITH FLOWERS

Lot 106: AFTER ODILON REDON: HEADS WITH FLOWERS

Auction Date: May 27, 2021

Estimate: $300 - $1,800

Description: Odilon Redon (French, 1840-1916) After: oil on paper, signed bottom right, framed. Odilon Redon was a prints man, draftsman, and painter best known for his brightly colored still lifes, which oftentimes intertwined flowers and landscapes with symbolist imagery. Initially intending, at his father’s behest, to study architecture, he was unable to pass the entrance exam to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, but remained in Paris, familiarizing himself with the intellectual circles of the city and honing his ideas. Upon returning to Bordeaux, he formally took on etching and lithography under the direction of Rodolphe Bresdin, an eccentric artist of the area. Although his early work was exclusively in black and white, his enduring friendship with Paul Gauguin and Maurice Denis greatly influenced his professional work, and by 1890, he was creating the colorful compositions for which he is remembered....
