Unlike in the numerous and sometimes austere shoulder pieces and half-length portraits, Rée has placed Hanna Nicolassen as a whole figure in a carefully crafted southern setting. The security of the flower-decorated terrace with its view of a beautiful landscape, the clear face of the young woman and her elegant dress, together with the color harmony of friendly light blue tones, lend the picture a special loveliness. - Literature: Cat. rais.: Maike Bruhns includes the painting to the cat. rais. as no. G68 - Provenance: Since the 1960s private collection Hamburg; thence by descent to a private collection in Lower-Saxony, North Germany - R. is one of the most eminents artists of Hamburg.     Spanierin Öl auf Malpappe mit Leinenprägung. 1930. 52 x 38 cm. Oben rechts mit Pinsel in Rot signiert "RÉE", verso (von fremder Hand?) bezeichnet "473" und "3663 Elbf.". Bruhns G 147. Sensibel und zugleich im Sinne der Neuen Sachlichkeit stilisiert erfasst Rée die junge Frau, die sich zwar entblößt, zugleich aber verträumt und distanziert zeigt, mit einer dezent erotischen Ausstrahlung. Das leuchtend helle, von links angestrahlte Inkarnat vor dem tiefdunklen Hintergrund scheint von Innen zu pulsieren. Die von der Künstlerin in dieser Zeit gerne verwendeten Blumenattribute bleiben hier nur am Rande und ganz dunkel im Hintergrund angedeutet. "Sie wurde eine Malerin der Frauen- und Mädchenschönheiten, deren Bilder, Zeugnisse eines unablässigen Schaffens von hoher Qualität, individuell auf die jeweils abgebildete Persönlichkeit abgestimmt waren und einen hohen Grad von Einfühlungsvermögen, Zuneigung oder sogar Zärtlichkeit für das Modell zeigen. Menschenkenntnis, ästhetische Ansprüche und emotionale Identifikation kamen hier nicht selten zu einem glücklichen Konsens." (Maike Bruhns, Anita Rée. Leben und Werk einer Hamburger Malerin 1885 - 1933, Hamburg 1986, S. 123). Nach ihrer Ausbildung schloss sich Anita Rée mit Franz Nölken und Friedrich Ahlers-Hestermann zu einer Ateliergemeinschaft zusammen. Im Winter 1912/13 hielt sich die Künstlerin in Paris auf und nahm Unterricht im Aktzeichnen bei Fernand Léger. 1913 trug sie zu einer Ausstellung der Galerie Commeter in Hamburg bei und gehörte nun der Hamburger Avantgarde an. 1919 war Rée Gründungsmitglied der Hamburgischen Sezession und lebte bald, hauptsächlich in Positano an der italienischen Amalfiküste. R. was co-fonder of the Hamburg secession a. the 'Gedok'.
