A group of 7 original watercolour and pencil drawings on paper, attributed to Heinrich Gottlieb Ludwig Reichenbach (1793-1879), all with manuscript Latin name identification below images comprising Agelaius phoeniceus (red-winged blackbird), Pycnonotus flavula Hodg. (ashy bulbul), Ramphastos vitellinus (channel-billed toucan), Larus brachyrhynchus (short-billed gull), Thalassidroma furiata (petrel), Eudyptes Antarctica Forsh. (penguin), Himantopus nigricollis (black-necked stilt), the first 30 x 21 cm, the others 17 x 11 cm and similar, some spotting and occasional paper toning, all framed and glazed, the last with some soiling between glass and print QTY: (7) NOTE: The first three have art gallery labels of Faerber and Maison Ltd., London, to verso and indicate that these three were taken from an album of studies for Vollständigste Naturgeschichte der Vögel (1845-1863). Reichenbach was the Director of the Botanical Gardens in Dresden.

Reichenbach executed a number of drawings for his monumental work Die Vollstandigste Naturgeschichte des in-und Auslandes, which was published in 14 volumes from 1845-62, in which he attempted to illustrate every bird in the world.

Er entfaltete eine rege publizistische Tätigkeit auf botanischem und zoologischem Gebiet. Eines seiner Hauptwerke, der "Conspectus regni vegetabilis" (1828), stellte ein eigenes, auf philosophischen Grundlagen beruhendes Pflanzensystem auf, das seinerzeit viel Beachtung fand; das vorliegende Werk stellt eine Überarbeitung und Ergänzung dazu dar. - Wenig stockfleckig, Titel stärker betroffen.

A valuable contemporary record of recently introduced ornamental trees, shrubs, and flowering plants, overseen by the “Société de Botanistes,” and reflecting the growing strength of botanical research in Belgium at this period.
