  • Robert Lewis Reid (1862-1929) American, Oil on Canvas with Pastel Highlights Figural Landscape "Mother and Child in Field of Flowers"
    Jan. 25, 2026

Robert Lewis Reid (1862-1929) American, Oil on Canvas with Pastel Highlights Figural Landscape "Mother and Child in Field of Flowers"

    Est: $6,000 - $9,000

Robert Lewis Reid (1862-1929) American, Oil on Canvas with Pastel Highlights Figural Landscape "Mother and Child in Field of Flowers". Soft-focus pastel work by Robert Lewis Reid, framed in a highly decorative gold frame. The piece depicts two figures, likely a mother and child, resting outdoors in a grassy area with a body of water or horizon visible in the distance. The woman is seated with her legs extended and is wearing a white bonnet and light-colored dress, while the child is nestled comfortably against her, also wearing a bonnet and light clothing. Reid utilized a light, Impressionistic palette, employing soft blues, greens, and yellows to capture the sunlit scene, emphasizing a gentle, serene moment of repose and connection between the figures. Signed lower right. Framed.  Overall Size: 16 1/4 x 20 1/4 in. Sight Size: 13 1/4 x 17 1/2 in.   Robert Lewis Reid (1862–1929) was an American Impressionist painter and muralist whose elegant, color-rich works made him a leading figure in turn-of-the-century American art. Born in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, he studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, then at the Art Students League of New York, and finally at the Académie Julian in Paris, where he immersed himself in the artistic currents of Europe. After returning to New York in 1889, Reid painted portraits and quickly gained prominence for decorative figure paintings — often depicting graceful young women amid flowers or idyllic landscapes — and for major mural and decorative commissions. His murals and stained-glass designs adorned prominent public buildings, including the Library of Congress, the Massachusetts State House, and institutions tied to the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. A founding member of the Ten American Painters, Reid helped spearhead American Impressionism’s move away from academic tradition. In the 1920s he taught at the Broadmoor Art Academy before a stroke in 1927 forced him to learn to paint with his left hand. He died in 1929, leaving behind a legacy of decorative beauty, nuanced light, and a distinctly American expression of Impressionism.

In 1897, an unnamed writer for The Critic, reviewing the National Academy annual exhibition, singled out two works submitted by Robert Reid, writing, "Two paintings by Mr. Robert Reid, Moonrise and Evening Song, may be mentioned in connection to Mr. Tarbell's work because they are, also, in a very high key, and broadly treated, but with a conventional breadth not out of place in frankly decorative work. To be properly appreciated, they should be seen in a room treated in harmony with their scheme of pale blues, greens and orange, and their few and simple lines." The ethereal work was so well received that it was awarded the Thomas B. Clarke Prize, $300 for the best American figure composition by the jurors for the National Academy exhibition. Robert Reid joined The Lambs Club in 1894 and was later elected as a life Member. The Lambs, Inc., is America's oldest professional theatrical club, founded in 1874, as a social club for theatre professionals. C
