    SIEGFRIED REINHARDT (AMERICAN, 1925-1984)

    Est: $1,000 - $3,000

Siegfried Reinhardt American, 1925-1984 Oil on board Signed and dated 1977 lower right, framed under glass. Surrealist image of hands reaching skyward, a bug lower right. About the Artist: German-born Siegfried Reinhardt of St. Louis has had no formal art training, but by the time he was eleven was intent on becoming a painter. A big (6 ft. 2 in.) and muscular 35, he went through an abstract phase ("esthetic nonsense," he calls it now), has since developed a wholly figurative style, which he boasts is "un-new, un-experi-mental and "un-angry." His main subject now, he says, is humanity, seen as the eternal lonely crowd—a torrent of faces and figures that gush out of "strange architectural settings that are unrelated to any recognizable place in the world." from Time Magazine (1950). This "torrent" describes to a T the incredible body of work St. Louis has seen from Reinhardt, from the "Gateway to the West" mosaic at the Gateway Arch to the mural series housed at Lambert International Airport, and the plethora of public works he has executed in between. Some of his notable accomplishments in the artistic world include in the following. In the late 1950s, he produced the painting "Man of Sorrows" in a series of seven installments on local public television station KETC, explaining his decisions and techniques to viewers as he went. From 1955 through 1970, Reinhardt taught at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts at Washington University. Reinhardt also served as artist in residence at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale from 1950 to 1954 then again from 1968 to 1969, and St. Louis Community College Meramec (Kirkwood) from 1971 through his death. Additional works are housed at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, the Saint Louis Art Museum, the Vatican Museum Picture Gallery, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Siegfried Reinhardt, Germany/ St. Louis (1925-1984), [A Naked Female Body Standing in 1943], Ink on paper

    Est: $500 - $800

Siegfried Reinhardt Germany/ St. Louis, (1925-1984) [A Naked Female Body Standing in 1943] Ink on paper A detailed drawing of most of a body of a naked woman standing on the ground with nothing around her. Her left hand is enormous, exaggerated and elongated, and her fingers and fingernails resemble knobs and roots of a tree. The joints of her hips and right shoulder are exaggeratedly rounded, she has extra rounded joints on her limbs and some long hair--but the woman is missing her face and other chunks of herself. A part of her body (possibly a part of her face) hovers in the air near her head. She looks ancient and youthful at the same time while a volcano erupts in the distant background creating large smoke swirls around her legs. A few large ink spots that have been splotched around her body round out the work. Reinhardt sketched in the contours of what appear to be an old piece of paper that serves as the backdrop for the image, likely grounded in the climate of total war and destruction of 1943. The piece is signed and dated: Siegfried Reinhardt-17-1943.

Siegfried Reinhardt Missouri / Germany, (1925-1984) Interior Allegory, 1961 oil on masonite Signed and dated lower right, in original frame. Provenance: Private Collection, Buffalo, N.Y. St. Louis-based artist Siegfried Reinhardt (1925-1984) loved to combine elements of realism with elements of surrealism, sometimes called super-realism. His main subject was humanity, and he excelled at capturing faces and figures in architectural settings that include seemingly miscellaneous objects painted in extraordinary detail. He served in the Navy during WW2 and later worked for many years teaching art at WashU and designing stained glass images for Emil Frei. His work is in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Nelson-Atkins Museum, the Saint Louis Art Museum, the Vatican Museums, et al. Reinhardt painted what Rusty Freeman of Cedarhurst Center for the Arts calls "puzzles." And his puzzles, loaded with signs, symbols, and iconographic messages (from art history, pop culture, the 1960s, everyday life, literature and religion), remain open to interpretation—since Reinhardt declined to say what his paintings meant. His 'Interior Allegory' here includes a nude woman reading a large book from an armchair, two naked children reflected in a mirror, a fancy chandelier, an ornate terra cotta sculptured form, a large bird calling out next to a gemstone and a carved face of Jesus wearing his Crown of Thorns, and a still life kind of vase with flowers--and all set in front of a room made out of blocks of classic Missouri red granite. N.B. One of the most thought-provoking details is perhaps the string tied around the woman's finger that is tied to a smaller bird that is twice tied upside down to the chandelier. What (hidden?) themes stand out for you in Reinhardt's work here? What do you believe are his messages in this complex, moody 1961 "Interior Allegory"? And how would you say this painting reflects the tumultuous, progressive or psychedelic mood of the 1960s? Signed and dated lower right, in original frame. Provenance: Private Collection, Buffalo, N.Y.
