              Est: $25,000 - $50,000

Oil on Board. 42 1/2" by 73". Panel features two Indians smoking, the park's vast mountain range sprawls behind them. Indians featured are: No Runner; Calling First Provenance: Ex Stainsby Collection. Prior to his collection they were acquired from a farmer outside of Glacier National Park. The story we are told is that they were cut off the side of a barn outside of Glacier National Park. A passerby noticed them and asked the farmer if he could have them, and the farmer stated that he could if he was able to remove them from the barn siding. There is evidence of glue on the back. The panels were likely hung in a train station near the park, and most likely removed following renovations. Panel is being sold as-is, and in the manner of Winold Reiss. We reached out to Renate Reiss and in her opinoin they are not done by Winold. Winold (Fritz Winold) Reiss (1886 - 1953) was active/lived in New York, Montana, Nevada / Germany. Winold Reiss is known for Indian portrait and mural painting, illustration. Born in Germany, Winold Reiss grew up in the Black Forest and came to be a foremost American painter of Indian portraits. He is also considered a modernist, a part of the Art Deco vanguard. In Munich, he studied at the Royal Academy and the Art School, and having been impressed by novels of James Fenimore Cooper, came to the United States in 1913 with the purpose of painting Indians like those he had read about. He arrived in New York City with little money and realized he was still a distance from Indian country, so he first got established as a portrait, landscape, and mural painter, art teacher, and interior designer. In the latter capacity, he successfully decorated several restaurants and other public buildings and had a commission for the Hotel Crillon. All of this activity allowed him to save money for travel. In 1919, he went West, visiting the Blackfeet Indians who made him an honorary member of the tribe, naming him "Beaver Child." He returned to their reservation in Browning, Montana most summers between 1920 and 1940 while continuing to live in New York. Eighty one of his portraits were published by the Great Northern Railway. Also during the 1920s and 1930s, he painted many scenes of Harlem, during the creative period known as the Harlem Renaissance. In 1939, he completed, what was then, the world's largest mural for the New York World's Fair. Also he ran art schools in New York City, Woodstock and Glacier National Park. In fact, he spent many summers teaching at Glacier National Park and at that time, was probably the state's leading art teacher. He painted other western scenes including the Grand Canyon. and he gave lectures on color and mural painting. His technique was to work quickly on a large sheet of Whatman Board with pastel and tempera, media that dried quickly so he could quickly finish his portraits. Often the elderly Indians would fall asleep, so he would fill on the decoration on their clothing later. He often used motifs from the Indian crafts in the background of his paintings. His art was also used in advertising as evidenced by a Great Northern Railway travel advertising poster of 1941, depicting his painting entitled Sundance-Piegan Chief-Glacier National Park.

1950 Great Northern Railway Calendar Winold Reiss

              Est: $300 - $600

Featured in this lot is an original 1950 Winold Reiss calendar from the Great Northern Railway, copyright 1949. The portrait title figure, "Tom Dawson, Mountain Man," lived in the region known as Glacier National Park in Northwestern Montana for over 50 years. He helped make the first survey of the park region and worked for the park's first superintendent, Major W. R. Logan, for whom Logan Pass is named. The story of Tom Dawson is found underneath the calendar pad. F. Winold Reiss was a German-born American artist and graphic designer. In 1920, he went West for the first time, working for months on the Blackfeet Reservation in Montana, painting 36 portraits of tribal members. Over the years Reiss painted more than 250 works depicting Native Americans. These paintings by Reiss became known more widely beginning in the 1920s to the 1950s, when the Great Northern Railway commissioned Reiss to do paintings of the Blackfeet which were then distributed widely as lithographed reproductions on Great Northern calendars. In 1931, and 1934-37, Reiss organized a summer art school, also referred to as an artists' colony near Glacier National Park. This calendar features the iconic ledger art imagery on left and right borders. Empire Builder Oriental Limited operated between Chicago and the Pacific Northwest via Glacier National Park, a route map is right below the portrait. The Empire Builder was the flagship passenger train of the Great Northern Railway (1889-1970), originally operating a steam powered service that was re-equipped in 1947 to a streamliner service; it was relaunched in 1971, when it was taken over by Amtrak and now runs daily intercity services between Chicago and Seattle and Portland. This calendar is in very nice overall condition, original top and bottom metal are still attached. Very slight edge scuffing noted. Age tanning noted throughout and very light foxing. Calendar months are December 1949 through December 1950. Original Great Northern Railway mailing tube included, original mailing label from a "district passenger agent" addressed to original owner still firmly affixed to tube with original cancelled US Mail 7 cents stamp affixed as well. This calendar is in good overall condition, age tanning noted. Slight scuffing exhibited along border edges, no other obvious marring noted. Measures 33"L x 16"W.

Winold Reiss (American, 1886-1953) Plenty Treaties, 1943

              Est: $70,000 - $90,000

Winold Reiss (American, 1886-1953) Plenty Treaties, 1943 pastel on paper signed Winold Reiss (lower left) 39 x 26 inches Property from the Collection of Ned Jacob Exhibited: Montana State Historical Society, Helena, Montana, 1964 C. M. Russell Museum, Great Falls, Montana, 1986 Winold Reiss was an ardent multiculturalist and champion of racial, ethnic, and cultural diversity long before those terms were terms at all. His art thrived on diversity; he drew and painted anyone and everyone, including the portraits of important figures of the Harlem Renaissance and of the Mexican Revolution. Reiss's approach to portraiture, combining sculpted realism with modernist elements one might call expressionistic, makes both his style and oeuvre unique among twentieth-century figurative artists. What brought Reiss to the United States from his native Germany? In short, Native Americans. Having been inspired-as many German artists were-by the dime Westerns of German author Karl May, it is said that Reiss was dismayed to learn that he would not be greeted by a war party when his ship docked in New York. In 1919, Reiss finally made his way West, to the Blackfeet Reservation in Montana, where he painted thirty-five portraits in thirty days and earned the name "Beaver Child" because of his hard work and persistence. Reiss was always a hard worker and always had a hand in any number of projects. In addition to painting portraits, Reiss taught art, did illustrations for books and periodicals, designed hotel interiors, and planned and took numerous trips, especially to the West, to paint. Plenty Treaties is a 1943 pastel, one that shows the artist's style at its peak. I mentioned "sculpted realism" earlier, and Reiss's portrayal of Plenty Treaties, a Blackfeet leader in traditional dress, exemplifies this approach. The face, hands, and legs, are sculpted in a way that almost mimics bas-relief sculpture. Reiss's style is topographical; Plenty Treaty's body, sitting at ease on a buffalo robe, conveys a kind of solidity and strength suggestive of endurance over the course of his life. As for the expressionistic aspects, consider the thick, almost electric outlines around the figure in yellow and sepia. These are characteristic of Reiss, imparting an Art Deco edge to his work that simultaneously seems to represent the vital force of the subject, the electricity that unites all of humanity. -James D.
