Dutch artist Rembrandt Harmensz, whose full birth name was Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn, is considered one of the most revered artists in all of history. Rembrandt paintings for sale are very rare, but do come up at private and public auctions on occasion. Pieter Lastman, a mentor of Rembrandt's, helped him master his techniques to do the historical and religious paintings he became famous for.
Artist Rembrandt Harmensz used his skills in etching and painting to create multiple self-portraits and biblical scenes. Emphasis on blending light and dark pigments draws attention to the subject, and this method was used for the background in most of Rembrandt Harmensz's prints and paintings. This print came from a collection of prints that were removed from the private collection of Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring in "Berghof" in the area of Berchtesgaden. The collection of prints were mounted into fine albums and were liberated May 4, 1945 by the second armored division commanded by General Leclerc, which captured the compound "Deuxieme Division Blindee G. 5". The front blank of each album was stamped "Cette piece provident des collections personnelles d'Hermann GOERING au Berghof, [Berchtesgaden] 4-5-1945..." (This piece is from the personal collection of Hermann Goering at Berhof, 4-5-1945) and below this "for authentication" and the stamp of the division "Deuxieme Division Blindee G. 5.” Each print also had a small card mounted underneath which described the image, reference number and the collection where original image for the print came from. In 1953, in France, a State sponsored sale resold the works of art from the collection of Hermann Goering, for which no owners or provenance have been found. Winning bidder will receive the framed print, a photo certificate of the authentication stamp, the original mounted description card, and a gallery certificate of authenticity showing both the front of the print and the Durand stamp on the reverse.
