Edinburgh' in pen and ink verso (Lugt 1224), with a thread margin or trimmed to the borderline, a small skinned patch lower left verso, generally in very good, well preserved condition, 40.5 x 27.5 cm (15 7/8 x 10 3/4 ins) in a conservation mount QTY: (1) NOTE: Provenance: Martin Folkes (Lugt 1033); George Walker (Lugt 1224). Martin Folkes (1690-1754), archaeologist and numismatics scholar, elected a Fellow of the Royal Society at the age of 23 and President from 1741 to 1753. He was also President of the Society of Antiquaries (1749-1750). His portrait was painted by Jonathan Richardson in 1718, and by Hogarth in 1741. George Walker (died 1815) was an 18th century landscape painter, and member of the Scottish Academy. Bartsch 45.

              Guido Reni (ambito di) (Bologna, 1575 - Bologna, 1642) Crocifissione olio su tela cm 265x182; con cornice cm 207x187Il dipinto in esame riprende una icona di enorme fortuna, il Cristo crocifisso commissionato a Guido Reni da Girolamo Resti per l’altare maggiore dell’oratorio della confraternita del Santissimo Sacramento, o delle Cinque Piaghe, presso la chiesa di Santo Stefano a Reggio Emilia. Il Malvasia (1678) riferisce che l'opera fu eseguita nel 1639, basandosi sull'iscrizione che sormontava l'altare, recentemente ricomparsa a seguito del restauro. Il ritrovamento del rogito stilato dal notaio reggiano Francesco Cignani (1 aprile 1637), in cui Gabriele Bussoli, un confratello di Resta, retrocede dal diritto di patronato dell'altare maggiore «avendo saputo che a spese di uno dei confratelli (Girolamo Resti) è stata dipinta da un egregio pittore una pala raffigurante il crocifisso al fine di porla sopra lo stesso altare maggiore», anticipa la data di esecuzione al 1637. Il dipinto proposto, come, invero, nella esecuzione primigenia, raggiunge un risultato di eccezionale qualità, in quanto la figura, che è bene ricordare è volutamente "a grandezza naturale" si staglia, quasi fosse illuminata da una misteriosa luce che spiove dall'alto e che concentra i suoi fasci solo sul corpo del Messia, contro un cielo livido, in una spazialità senza tempo, in un luogo che è assenza di luogo, su un Golgota che assume la dimensione simbolica dell'intero universo.  Una "rigidità" propria dello stile fiammingo quattrocentesco in una fissità e immobilità sovrannaturale, che l'autore concentra in quel lembo di perizoma voltato in alto contro ogni legge di gravità, al fine di raffigurare l'immobilità del tutto, anche di quel velo, mentre il solo movimento avvertibile, con il suo potente richiamo, è nello sguardo del Cristo e nel suo dialogo: l’Eterno irrompe nella storia umana con la Redenzione. Sein Haupt ist von einem schmalen Nimbus umgeben, was ihn als Heiligen kennzeichnet. Er trägt ein weit geöffnetes bläuliches Hemd und darüber einen rot-braunen Mantel.               DIE HEILIGE MARIA MAGDALENA MIT ENGELN Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 156 x 129 cm. Maria Magdalena als Büßerin im Eingang einer Höhle sitzend, durch die der Blick auf eine Landschaft und auf den hohen hellblauen Himmel fällt. Sie sitzt mit ihren langen dunkelblonden Haaren in einem weißen Gewand, das den Brustbereich frei lässt, und rötlichem Umhang auf einem Felsstück und hat ihren Kopf zurück gelehnt; dabei stützt sie sich mit ihrer rechten Hand ab. Ihren linken Arm hat sie ausgestreckt und ihre Hand ruht dabei auf einem Schädel, der auf einem weiteren Felsstück liegt. Sie hat ein feines, fast weißes Inkarnat und mit ihren dunklen Augen blickt sie reumütig zum Himmel in dem zwei große nackte, geflügelte Engel mit einem orangefarbenem Band zu erkennen sind, die auf sie herabschauen. Qualitätvolle, minutiös ausgearbeitete Malerei in zarten, weichen Farbtönen. Es existieren mehrere Fassungen dieses Gemäldes, darunter eine der Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Antica (Palazzo Barberini), Rom, bei der zusätzlich ein aufgestelltes Kruzifix neben dem Schädel zu sehen ist. Anmerkung: Guido Reni war einer der berühmtesten und bedeutendsten Künstler des 17. Jahrhunderts. Er wirkte vor allem in seiner Heimatstadt und in Rom und war der Hauptvertreter eines barocken Klassizismus in der Malerei. Renis Geldknappheit aufgrund seiner Spielsucht führte teils zu einer Art Serienproduktion, beispielsweise gibt es jeweils mehrere, oft leicht abgewandelte Versionen von Renis Himmelfahrt Mariä oder/und Immaculata, ebenso wie Maria Magdalenas. Einige dieser Gemälde entstanden zum Teil unter Mithilfe oder gänzlich von seiner Werkstatt. Das vorliegende Gemälde ist jedoch von hervorragender Qualität, so dass es ihm und seiner Werkstatt auch zugeschrieben werden könnte.
