Louis J. Rhead Lundborg's Perfumes vintage window card 1894 17.75 h x 12 w in (45 x 30 cm) Rhead was one of the most active poster artists of the 1890s, producing around one hundred designs over the course of the decade. His style reflected a deep admiration for French Art Nouveau, marked by graceful line work, decorative patterning, and a harmonious use of color. Though some critics viewed his fidelity to Eugene Grasset's style as overly derivative, Rhead remains notable as one of the few artists to successfully bring the spirit of French Art Nouveau to the American poster movement. His designs were commissioned by major newspapers, publishers, and magazines-including The Sun, The Journal, and The Century-as well as by commercial clients, such as a perfume company for which he created several striking advertising images. The Sun / Merry X-Mas.

    Est: $3,500 - $4,000

ARTIST: LOUIS J. RHEAD (1858-1926) SIZE: 31 1/2 x 48 3/4 in./80 x 123.8 cm PRINTER: Liebler & Maas, New York DESCRIPTION: Christmas: a time of peace on Earth and goodwill to Men—and let’s not forget, it’s also an extremely important season in the mind of merchants. And though dolls would appear to be the gift of choice in Rhead’s Yuletide scenario, complete with a candlelit tree, The Sun wants to remind every purveyor of commercial goods that their publication reached the most desirable demographic for their advertising dollars. Rhead was one of the first poster artists to gain an international reputation. Born in England, he was quite active in London, New York, and Paris with equal success; his exhibition of posters in New York in 1895 was America’s first, and was well received. He was heavily influenced by Grasset, whom he admired and met while in Paris. Rare! (Art Nouveau; Literary; American)
