Rudolf Ribarz Sold at Auction Prices

Landscape painter, Flower painter, Painter

Rudolf Ribarz was an Austrian landscape painter. His father was a successful merchant; a profession he initially trained for, until he discovered his interest in painting. At first, he secretly took lessons from the landscape painter, Joseph Holzer [de] then, around 1864, enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna, where he studied with Albert Zimmermann. In 1868, he visited an exhibition in Munich, and was especially impressed by the French art. From 1870 to 1872, he travelled to the South Tyrol, Trentino and Venice. This was followed, in 1875, by a study visit to Brussels. In 1876, he finally found the means to make an extended stay in Paris, where he came into contact with the works of the Barbizon School. Thanks to the art dealer, Charles Sedelmeyer, who was originally from Vienna, he was able to meet Charles-Francois Daubigny, one of the group's last surviving members. More study trips followed, to Oldebroek, Dordrecht and Rotterdam in the Netherlands, and to Normandy. He also participated in numerous exhibitions, including the Columbian Exposition in Chicago. It was 1892 before he returned to Vienna and, despite his long absence, was soon offered an appointment as manager of the flower painting department at the Arts and Crafts School (now the University of Applied Arts). There, he cultivated a simple, intimate style of landscape painting; inspired by his time in France. During the 1890s, he experimented with Japonisme. In 1899. he was forced to retire, due to a worsening "nervous condition". He died in 1904 at a psychiatric asylum, and was interred at Dobling Cemetery. A street in Vienna's Ottakring district was named after him in 1936.

        Jun. 06, 2023

        Mill in the rain

        Est: €2,700 - €3,500

signed lower right, framed, black wooden frame with gilding. Rudolf Ribarz´s art was formed under the influence of Corot and the Barbizon School, with whom he came into contact during his stay in Paris. Although he incorporated elements of Dutch landscape painting into his works, he found his personal style painting landscapes that were elevated beyond their mundanity with a restrained, but nonetheless decorative touch. His Mill in the Rain reflects the double nature of his landscapes: the scene is real, but nature becomes a benevolent, gentle entity for the viewer to observe.

RUDOLF RIBARZ (1848-1904), OIL ON PANEL ‘MEDITERRANEAN GIRL ON THE SHORE’ 1872

        Est: €250 - €500

Rudolf Ribarz (1848-1904) Oil on panel Austria / Italy, 1872 This oil painting by the Austrian landscape painter Rudolf Ribarz (1848-1904) shows a young Italian woman with a tambourine. A sailing boat that has not yet been completed can be seen on the grass behind the woman. A little girl is also lying on the grass in a dreamy pose with the sea in the background. This small work was painted by the artist during a study trip in northern Italy in 1872. Rudolf Ribarz (1848-1904) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Albert Zimmerman and befriended Emil Jakob Schindler and Eugen Jettel there. He travelled to South Tyrol, Trentino and Venice between 1870 and 1872 as well as Brussels on a study visit in 1875. In 1876 Ribarz moved to Paris, where he was in contact with Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot and the Barbizon school. He travelled to and studied in Holland (Wezep, Dordrecht, Rotterdam) and Normandy. In 1892 he returned to Vienna and was offered to head the flower painting department at the Vienna Arts and Crafts School, despite his long absence. There, he first preferred the plain, introverted landscape painting of the French (Paysage intime) and later a more decorative form of landscapes. In 1900 he had to give up his position due a worsening nervous disorder. Signature: Signed and dated lower left ‘R Ribarz 72’ Frame: Gilt wood and stucco frame Dimensions: 40 x 54.5 cm (size incl. frame); 15 x 29 cm (wood panel) Condition: Painting in good condition with soiling and slightly darkened as well as a few scratches.
