Framed: 129.5 x 99 cm. (50 3/4 x 39 in.) Provenance: Private Collection, UK Notes: Richards was born in Philadelphia in 1833 and first exhibited his art at the Pennsylvania Academy in 1853. (1) His remarkable accuracy was accomplished through intense outdoor study and painting en plein air. His son remarked that Richards "stood for hours [...] with folded arms, studying the motion of the sea, until people thought him insane. After days of gazing, he made pencil notes of the action of the water." (2) Richards artistic style had roots within the Hudson River School, perhaps most notably in the manner of Jasper F. Cropsey, whom he admired and met during his early career in the year 1854. (3, p.15) From 1857 onward, Richards focused his artistic attention on coastal topography, such as the present example. In a recorded letter, the artist vividly described observing the waves at Chesil Beach: â€œI watch and watch it, try to disentangle its push and leap and recoil, make myself ready to catch the tricks of the big breakers and am always startled out of my self-possession by the thunder and the rushâ€. (3, p. 33) True to his words, Richards masterfully captures the atmospheric severity and raw power of the rugged coastline in this piece. It is recorded that Richards travelled to Europe in July of 1891, and visited Ireland, Scotland, England and Paris. Oil on Canvas on Board Provenance: Noyes & Blakeslee Art Gallery William Trost Richards (1833 - 1905) was active/lived in Pennsylvania, Rhode Island. William Richards is known for Marine-seascape, landscape and botanic painting. A native of Philadelphia, William Trost Richards had a fifty-year career as a noted landscape and marine painter whose mature work combined extremely detailed aspects of nature with atmospheric qualities. He was especially innovative for his time because he borrowed informal composition techniques from the Pre-Raphaelites of England, painting lights and colors outdoors as he actually observed them. His formal education ended at age thirteen when he quit school to support his family by working as a commercial draughtsman designing ornamental metal fixtures. He studied painting privately with William Stanley Haseltine and Paul Weber from whom he learned a meticulous graphic technique. He was supported by local persons in Philadelphia who financed a year of study in Europe from 1855 to 1856, and in 1867, he went abroad for a second time. He did numerous pencil drawings and paintings of Italy and Switzerland and much painting along English coasts. By the 1850s, he had decided that landscape was his favorite subject matter and was especially inspired by American poetry but was much more inspired by American landscape painting, especially that of John Kensett and Frederic Edwin Church. He did a series of brilliant Adirondack landscapes and also coastal landscapes and marine subjects from New Jersey to Maine. The latter part of his career, he was firmly established as a coastal and marine painter, ever fascinated by the tumultuous phenomenon of water hitting rocks and beach. His works on paper--watercolor and pencil drawings--were some of his earliest and most important contributions, and hundreds of them survive in spite of an 1854 studio fire. Having been working in oil for some time, he began working in watercolor in the late 1860s, which was linked to his growing interest in the seashore. Watercolor was best for plein air sketching and was excellent for expressing the atmospheric effects he sought to achieve. Two patrons of his watercolor painting were Elias L. Magoon and George Whitney, and their support allowed him to work without the worry of money.

He first exhibited his work in an exhibition of watercolors organized by Alfred Bierstadt in 1858; later exhibiting at the National Academy of Design from 1861 to 1899 and at the Brooklyn Art Association from 1863 to 1885. He eschewed the romanticized approach of the Hudson River painters and instead focused on meticulous rendering of detail. Attributed to William Trost Richards (American, 1833-1905) A forest interior with figures inscribed 'William Trost Richards' to the reverse of the frame by a later hand oil on canvas 25 x 37cm Although distinct from the artist's late work, which featured predominantly coastal subjects, the present painting can be compared with Richards' early depictions of forest interiors, executed during the 1860s. His landscape and nature studies of this period were directly influenced by John Ruskin. The artist's paintings rarely featured people, but figures can be found in some of his early woodland works such as Autumn Woods, 1865 (sold Christie's, New York, 20th November 2019, lot 50). 34 x 45cm framed

William Trost Richards (American, 1833-1905). Oil on canvas painting titled "Spring Tide" depicting a serene seascape, 1875. Signed and dated along the lower right. With a title plaque affixed to the verso. Lot Essay: William Trost Richards was an American landscape artist known for his association with both the Hudson River School and the American Pre-Raphaelite movement. Born in Philadelphia, he attended Central High School before studying under German artist Paul Weber while working as a designer and illustrator. His artistic career began with a public exhibition in 1858, organized by Albert Bierstadt. Over the years, he gained recognition, becoming an honorary member of the National Academy of Design in 1862 and a full Academician in 1871. He also joined the Association for the Advancement of Truth in Art, reflecting his commitment to precise and realistic depictions of nature. Richards traveled to Europe in 1866, and upon returning, he spent summers painting along the East Coast. During the 1870s, he produced highly detailed watercolor landscapes of the White Mountains, some of which are now housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He exhibited extensively at institutions such as the National Academy of Design and the Brooklyn Art Association. In 1881, he settled in Jamestown, Rhode Island, where he lived and worked until his death in 1905. His artistic style emphasized meticulous realism, distinguishing him from other Hudson River School painters who often took a more romanticized approach. In his later years, he focused almost exclusively on marine watercolors. Richards' works are featured in many prestigious museums, including the National Gallery, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. His daughter, Anna Richards Brewster, also became a painter.
