In 1721, he was appointed Commodore of a small squadron that cruised in the Mediterranean for the protection of trade. He died unmarried in Jamaica, having his Commodore's pendant on board the Dragon, on 14 September 1725.

Attributed to Jonathan Richardson Senior (English, 1677-1745) A pair of portraits of a lady and gentleman, believed to be Sir Richard Child, 1st Earl Tylney (1680-1750), and his wife Dorothy (née Glynne, 1682-1744) of Wanstead, Essex oil on canvas 73 x 60.5cm Provenance: By descent within the present vendor's family since the 19th century Richard Child was an English politician best remembered for the construction of Wanstead House, a Neo-Palladian mansion designed by Colen Campbell. Commissioned in 1715, it was completed in 1722 but tragically demolished little over a century later. Richard was the son of Sir Josiah Child (1630-1699), Governor of the East India Company, 1st Baronet of Wanstead. In 1704 he succeeded his half brother to the Baronetcy. A year earlier he had married Dorothy Glynne, daughter of John Glynne and Dorothy Tylney, daughter of Francis Tylney of Tylney Hall, Hampshire. Richard was created 1st Viscount Castlemaine in 1718. In 1730, upon the death of her cousin, Dorothy and her husband inherited the Tylney estates. Richard was subsequently made 1st Earl Tylney which the family adopted as their surname thereafter. Likely executed circa 1710, this elegant pair portraits, acquired by the present vendor's grandfather in Essex in the 19th century, were traditionally identified as Sir Richard and Lady Child by old inscriptions to the reverse of the canvases (see Fig. 1), now covered by relining during conservation by the current owners at the end of the 20th century. The likenesses of both sitters are corroborated by their depictions, albeit on a smaller scale, in William Hogarth's group portrait, The Assembly at Wanstead House, c. 1728-1731 (Philadelphia Museum of Art, no. M1928-1-13). The identity of the present portrait of Richard Child is further susbstantiated by its close facial resemblance to hitherto his only known individual portrait, recorded in the Wanstead House sale of 1822 as by Richardson, which shows him dressed in blue (Private Collection, see Miles Barton, 'Sir Richard Child of Wanstead: a Portrait Revealed', The Georgian Group Journal, Vol. XIX, 2011, pp. 184-85). Furthermore, a comparable portrait of 'Dorothy, Countess Tylney' by Sir Godfrey Kneller (sold Sotheby's, London, 9th July 1997, lot 25) additionally supports the traditional identification of her present portrayal. Although the present work depicts Richard Child in a more restrained manner to his other known portrait - which shows him cloaked flamboyantly in blue - the attribution of that work to Jonathan Richardson highlights the family's association with the artist. Indeed, Richard's father, Sir Josiah Child, had previously been painted by Richardson's teacher, John Riley (NPG 5932).

He was responsible not only for executing a large number of portraits, but also for three treatises on painting. The influence of these works was significant, especially on the young Sir Joshua Reynolds, who claimed that Richardson's writing inspired him to become an artist.Richardson trained under the portrait painter John Riley, later marrying Riley's niece. His career as a portrait painter prospered and, by 1731, he was described by the contemporary art historian George Vertue as one of the three foremost masters of the day. He executed accomplished and sensitive portraits, with a richness of colouring that set him apart from his two main rivals Sir Godfrey Kneller and Michael Dahl.

Stretcher Size 48 3/4 x 40 1/4 in.; Frame dimensions 55 x 46 3/8 in. Jonathan Richardson the Elder was a noted portraitist and the first English painter to write a significant treatise on art. His works were of great influence to William Hogarth and Sir Joshua Reynolds. Additionally, he assembled one of the most important English collections of Old Master Drawings of his time. Sir Andrew Fountaine (1676-1753) was an English antiquarian, art collector and influential courtier. The present portrait depicts Fountaine wearing the gilt bronze key of his office as Vice-Chamberlain to Princess Caroline of Ansbach. This portrait also highlights Fountaineâs interest in Italian art, alluded to by the classical nude, and his intellectual acumen, illustrated by the open books before him. Another portrait of Fountaine, also depicting his status as a collector and connoisseur, by William Hogarth is in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Jonathan Richardson (British, 1667-1745), Group Portrait of the Artist and his Son, with John Milton oil on canvas (lined), unsigned, retains two exhibition labels to verso, presented in a later frame. Stretcher size 25 x 29 1/4 in.; Frame dimensions Jonathan Richardson was a noted portraitist and the first English painter to write a significant treatise on art. He considered his writing and painting to be of equal importance and merit. His son, Jonathan Richardson the Younger, shared many of his father's interests. Together, they wrote a book on art in Italy that would serve as a the guide for many embarking on the Grand Tour. In 1734, Jonathan Richardson and his son published Explanatory Notes and Remarks on Milton's Paradise Lost. In the engraved frontispiece to this book, Richardson created a portrait of Milton with a laurel crown. This same image is found in the present portrait, with the addition of divine rays illuminating the poet. Portraits by Richardson of Milton are in the collections of the Royal Collection Trust and the Princeton University Art Museum. Richardson was known to complete a self portrait or a portrait of his son on an almost daily basis. He viewed his painting practice, and the creation of poetry, as a means of self reflection. A portrait of the artist's son held in the collection of Tate London, acquired in 2010, is an interesting comparison to the present work. In the portrait, Richardson depicts his son in his study, surrounded by a bust of Homer, a classical nude sculpture, books and writing implements, while portraits of the artist and his wife hang on wall. Provenance: Private Collection, USAThe present portrait has been traditionally attributed to Jonathan Richardson and Sloane is known later to have sat for the artist when he was older, in 1730 (the portrait now belongs to the University of Oxford). Further likenesses of the great connoisseur were made by Sir Godfrey Kneller (engraved), Thomas Murray, Stephen Slaughter and Attributed to John Vanderbank.A physician by trade, Sir Hans Sloane (1660-1753) is celebrated today foremost as a prolific collector of all kinds of objects from around the world. By his death in 1753 he had amassed over 71,000 items. Largely misunderstood by his contemporaries he can be regarded as something of a visionary. After being appointed a trustee for Sloane's collection Horace Walpole (himself a notable collector) characterised his trust as 'guardianship of embryos and cockle-shells'. Equally sceptical was Sir Charles Hanbury Williams, who, when asked by Sloane (whose medical care had saved his life) to send him any curiosities he came across during his travels, ended his facetious reply with the words: 'This my wish, it is my glory,To furnish your nicknackatory.'The ever spiteful Lord Hervey, furthermore, in one of the pieces he wrote to amuse Queen Caroline, complimented her as follows:'Who every Sunday suffers stupid SloaneTo preach on a dried fly or Hampstead stone,To show such wonders as were never seen,And give accounts of what have never been.'Yet, by way of vindication the Sloane Collection was subsequently purchased by the nation to be joined with the King's and Cotton Libraries, The Harleain Manuscripts together with other major collections and by an Act of Parliament in June 1753 the sum of £100,000 was ordered to be raised by lottery, and a number of 'Trustees for the British Museum' appointed, consisting of great officers of State, representatives of the families of Sloane, Cotton, Harley, Townley, Elgin and Knight, a nominee of the King, and 15 elected members. For housing these collections Montague House was acquired for £10,000. The British Museum was opened to the public on 15 January, 1759, 6 years after Sloane's death. While the Museum on its foundation was of value mostly to men of science, the accessions which it received rapidly made it a centre for all aspects of learning. The Trust was charged with the duty of ensuring that Sir Hans Sloane's and the accompanying collections might be preserved and maintained, not only for the inspection and entertainment of the learned and curious, but for the general use and benefit of the public to all posterity. Today the global and unquestioned reputation of the British Museum more than compensates for the ridicule Sloane received from his contemporaries for his 'nicknackatory'.
