7 Rickerby photos: Pres. Eisenhower w/ Mamie TLS

    Est: $400 - $600

[Rickerby, Arthur B./Eisenhowers] 7 gelatin silver photos by Arthur B. Rickerby (1921-1972) and Mamie Eisenhower TLS. ++ TLS by First Lady Mamie Eisenhower on White House stationery, with WH envelope, to Miss Betty Beale. Beale was a "society writer" for the Washington (DC) Star newspaper, chronicling events in the Truman through Reagan administrations. Mamie Eisenhower's letter refers to an incident at the WH where Beale spilled something on the President's shirt and apologized with a gift of flowers. Letter dated May 7, 1953, signed in blue pen on 9 x 6 in folded note paper. ++ Gelatin silver photograph of 1957 Inauguration. Extremely rare photo shows President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Vice President Richard Nixon laughing during the public inauguration ceremony held on the east portico of the White House, Jan. 21, 1957. Both men are holding golf balls and it appears that they are tossing them into the audience. Because January 20, 1957, the date set by the Constitution as the official inaugural date, fell on Sunday, Jan. 20, Eisenhower and Nixon had a private swearing-in ceremony at the White House. They repeated the oaths-of-office the next day in public. Shown from left to right are Pres. Eisenhower's son, Brig. Gen. John S. D. Eisenhower, his wife, Barbara Jean Thompson Eisenhower, Mamie Eisenhower, Pres. Eisenhower, VP Richard Nixon. Photo 8.5 x 14 in., stamped "PHOTO BY/ A.B. RICKERBY" on back. Trimmed, minor surface blemishes from negative showing as white streaks, most notably by Eisenhower's face; slight watermark visible by John & Barbara Eisenhower; .5 in. tear top right. ++ Gelatin silver b/w photograph of a smiling Dwight D. Eisenhower holding hands with Mamie Eisenhower, reacting as poll returns from the 1952 Presidential election are posted on a chalkboard behind. Connecticut Republican Senatorial candidates Prescott Bush and William Purtell are shown leading their Democratic rivals Abraham Ribicoff and William Benton. Unmarked, attributed to Arthur Rickerby. 13.5 x 10.25 in., trimmed, very good condition. ++ 2 gelatin silver b/w photographs of the 1957 Eisenhower Inaugural Parade show Eisenhower standing in motorcade car with the Capitol Building in the background. Both stamped on back "PHOTO BY/ A.B. RICKERBY", one stamp barely visible, both trimmed. Larger 12 1/2 x 8 3/4 in., smaller 14 x 7 ½ in. Larger photo paper with surface creases, smaller very good. ++ Photograph of Queen Elizabeth II shown in car with Pres. Eisenhower during her 1957 tour of US and Canada. Photo 14 x 11 in., stamped "PHOTO BY/ A.B. RICKERBY" on back. ++ Photograph of President and Mrs. Eisenhower waving to crowd; President shown wearing his American Legion cap. 10 ½ x 13 ¼ in. Stamped on back "PHOTO BY/ A.B. RICKERBY" with United Press Association credit caption. ++ Photo of Gen. Douglas MacArthur, possibly giving a "thumbs-down" to the audience, standing with a US Army Major General. 11 x 14 in., stamped on back "PHOTO BY/ A.B. RICKERBY" with United Press Association credit caption. Condition very good.
