George Warren Rickey Sold at Auction Prices

Sculptor, b. 1907 - d. 2002

(born 1907; died 2002) American sculptor. George Warren Rickey was born in South Bend, Indiana in 1907, but was raised primarily in Scotland, after his father was relocated there by his company, Singer Sewing Machine in 1913. He received a European education, studying history in Scotland and at Oxford. During his studies at Oxford, Rickey discovered the Ruskin School of Drawing, and gave up playing football for his college to study art part-time. Rickey then decided to pursue art and studied at the Academie Lhote in Paris. In 1964, he returned to the U.S. and taught at various schools and colleges. During the Second World War, Rickey joined the Army Air Corps. It was during this time that he gained engineering experience which would have a great impact on his future artistic endeavors. In 1948, back from the war, Rickey studied art at the Chicago Institute of Design. He is best known for his “Kinetic Art” sculptures which were sculptures that moved free of motors and power. These sculptures were often made of polished aluminum parts that would swing around a fulcrum in the breeze. Later in his life he was based in East Chatham, New York.

Lot Essay George Rickey was an American artist renowned for his innovative contributions to kinetic sculpture. His sculptures are celebrated for their graceful and dynamic movements, which are achieved through careful balance and precision engineering. These works often consist of slender metal elements, typically in stainless steel, that respond to natural forces such as wind, creating mesmerizing and ever-changing patterns of motion.  Rickey's fascination with the interplay of art and physics is evident in his constructions. His works, like Two Open Rectangles Up Wall, exemplify his mastery of geometry and the intricate mechanics required to make his sculptures come to life. These works engage viewers with a captivating dance of shapes and shadows, challenging the boundaries between art and science. George Rickey's legacy as a pioneer in kinetic art continues to inspire contemporary artists, as his innovative approach to metal sculptures and constructions expanded the horizons of what art can be and how it can interact with its environment.

George Rickey, Three Lines up Staggered, 1990

            Est: €30,000 - €40,000

Signed, dated and numbered 'Rickey 1990' on the plinth (scratched). Numbered 2/3. The present work is registered in the George Rickey Estate, East Chatham. George Rickey was a close observer of nature. The structure of a young tree, its branches and its quiet movements in the wind have been the inspiration and starting point for the son of an engineer’s early kinetic metal sculptures since the beginning of the 1960s. With the thus won knowledge, Rickey designed basic shapes and structures of lines and areas which he assembled, following the laws of gravity, into seemingly simple, in reality highly complex, mobile constructions. “For the kinetic artist also,” Rickey wrote in 1970, “nature is omnipresent and touches him constantly. […] Nature has presented the landscape, the figure, and still life – as well as geometry, light, and mediating space – to the artist’s eye [...]. It is not in the imitation of appearance that kinetic art makes use of ‘nature’, but in the recognition of regularities, in the awareness of analogies, and in the correspondence to the comprehensive repertoire of movement in space.” (Quoted from Eberhard Roters, George Rickey, ein Porträt, in: Wieland Schmied, George Rickey, St. Gallen 1976, p. 11). The sculpture on offer “Three Lines up Staggered” pertains to the group of works “Lines and Blades” created from 1961 onwards, in which Rickey combined one, two, or three needles with one another, and balances them out. Like hardly any other group of works, it embodies the idea of a moving coordinate system whose lines constantly form new constellations. Continuously changing images are thus created in front of our eyes.
