    Jessie Beard Rickly American (Missouri), 1895-1975 Oil on panel Signed. Still life showing flowers in a vase on a table, backside of panel showing a portrait of a nun, framed. Jessie Rickly was born in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. She studied at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts under Edmund Wuerpel and Oscar Berninghaus, and was a member of Shikari, an honorary sorority consisting of artists within the program. In 1932, Rickly was key in founding the Ste. Genevieve Artists' Colony, along with fellow artists Aimee Schweig and Bernard Peters. The colony's impressive roster included prominent Missouri artists such as Thomas Hart Benton, Joe Jones, and Joseph Paul Vorst. Rickly had powerful convictions and was a strong political voice in the art community. Her work is in the collection of the National Gallery of Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

    Jesse Beard Rickly (American; 1895 - 1975) St. Genevieve Landscape Watercolor on paper c. 1940. Signed. Jessie Rickly was born in Poplar Bluff, Missouri and educated at Harvard and Washington University School of Fine Arts. Further training came from Charles Hawthorne in Provincetown, Massachusetts, and upon returning to St. Louis she also studied with Oscar Berninghaus and Edmund Wuerpel, the director of the Washington University School of Fine Art. In 1934 she and fellow artist Aimee Schweig co-founded the Ste. Genevieve art colony, whose members included Joe Jones, Joseph Vorst and Thomas Hart Benton, among others. Rickly was an artistic voice for women in the 1930's and very active politically. She was involved in creating organizations to help educate the public and other artists about the role of art in society including the Independent Artists, The Missourians and the New Hats. In 1935, Rickly made St. Louis her permanent home where she continued her art career.During her career, she exhibited at the St. Louis Artist's Guild, 1927 (prize), 1931 (prize), 1932, (prize), 1945 (prize), 1957; Missouri State Fair, 1917 (prize), 1932 (prize); Kansas City Art Institute, 1929, 1934 (medal); City Art Museum, St. Louis, 1928, 1939; Southern States Art League, 1933, 1934, among others. 14" x 9 3/4" (image)
