Jh. in Köln ansässigen, vermögenden Kaufmannsdynastie. Hyacinthe Rigaud, Perpignan 1659 - 1743 Paris, Portrait of Cardinal André-Hercule de Fleury

    Est: €4,000 - €8,000

Hyacinthe Rigaud Perpignan 1659 - 1743 Paris Portrait of Cardinal André-Hercule de Fleury Oil on canvas, relined 81.5 x 63.5 cm, with frame 95 x 79.5 cm Hyacinthe Rigaud was an important French painter of the Baroque period. He showed exceptional talent from an early age and received formal training from his father, a modest portraitist. Rigaud's skills soon attracted the attention of influential patrons, establishing him as one of the most sought-after portrait painters in France. Rigaud's style was characterised by meticulous attention to detail, rich colours and magnificent compositions, reflecting the opulence and splendour of the French court. His portraits often depicted aristocrats, clergymen, and other prominent figures, whose stature and personality he captured with remarkable precision. One notable work is the portrait of Cardinal André-Hercule de Fleury (Lodève 1653 - 1743 Paris). He was a French cardinal and prime minister who headed the government of King Louis XV from 1726 to 1743. Against a dark background, Cardinal Fleury is depicted in a white habit decorated with intricate details and complemented by a bright red cloak and headdress. He looks at the viewer with a warm smile that radiates confidence and wisdom and exudes a gentle authority. The voluminous robes worn by the cardinal emphasise his majestic aura and envelop him in an air of stately splendour. The skillful use of light and shadow gives the portrait depth and dimension as well as a sense of dynamism and vitality. This painting, an extremely high quality repetition of Rigaud's earlier work from 1730, now in the Wallace Collection (P130), by his own hand, is an example of the artist's mastery of portraiture and his ability to capture the essence of his subjects with unrivalled finesse. Through his artistry, Rigaud immortalises Cardinal Fleury and invites the viewer to contemplate the enduring legacy of this influential figure in French history.

BILDNIS VON LOUIS DE BOURBON Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 54 x 41 cm. In prächtigem vergoldeten Rahmen. (1401465) (19)

PORTRAIT EINES ARISTOKRATEN MIT RÜSTUNG Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. Im Hochoval: 77 x 61 cm. In teilvergoldetem Rahmen. Beigegeben ein Gutachten mit Vergleichsabbildungen von Mirko Gambaro, Brescia, 11. Dezember 2022, in Kopie. Vereinzelt kleine Retuschen. (1390861) (18)

Circle of FRANÇOIS HYACINTHE RIGAUD (Perpignan, 1659 - 1743). "Portrait of Louis Alexandre Comte de Toulouse". Oil on canvas. Re-drawn. Size: 41 x 33 cm, 57 x 47 cm (frame). The psychological capture of deep character in the look, the point of view represented in the scene, the sumptuousness in the details of the clothes and objects, and the use of the colours between lights and shadows allow us to place the artist of this work in the circle of the great French painter Hyacinthe Rigaud (1659-1743), one of the best portraitists associated with the era of Louis XIV. He made an outstanding contribution to French painting from 1688 onwards. He was particularly noted for his portrait art, depicting members of the French royal family. Notable, for example, is his famous state portrait of "Louis XIV at Coronation Robes" (1701, Louvre, Paris), one of the finest Baroque paintings of the French court. Rigaud's broad, vigorous style and the way he relied on the nobility of posture and splendour of his models were the basis of his success. Indeed, he is the creator of an original genre, that of the "portrait of pomp" which spread through the European courts of the first half of the 18th century. Examples of his great output can be seen in some of the finest art museums in Europe and North America. For details of other famous artists and master craftsmen active in France during his day, see: French Baroque Artists (c.1600-1700) and French Decorative Designers (c.1640-1792). The pictorial quality of the work is superb. It shows great mastery of the portrait genre. It is thought to have been executed in Rigaud's own workshop, which, due to the multitude of royal and noble commissions at the time, had a large number of artists in its employ who worked on the completion of these portraits. Marie-Casimira Louise De La Grange was known by the nickname of "Marysie?ka". She was born in Nevers (centre of France) on 28 June 1641 and died in Blois (France) on 1 January 1716.) She was Queen consort of Poland and Grand Duchess consort of Lithuania as the wife of John III of Poland from 1674 to 1696. She was the daughter of Henri Albert De La Grange d'arquien and Françoise de La Châtre.

Measurements: 73 x 58 cm; 92 x 79 cm (frame). The psychological capture of deep character in the glance, the point of view represented in the scene, the sumptuousness in the details of the clothes and objects, and the use of the colors between lights and shades allows to place the author of this work in the circle of the great French painter Hyacinthe Rigaud (1659-1743), one of the best portraitists associated with the era of Louis XIV. In this work of oval format the artist shows us a portrait that starts from the artistic historical tradition with the main model of bust on a neutral background that brings greater prominence to the effigy. However, the artist goes a step further and forces the usual "three quarters", without placing the figure in profile, so as to create greater depth in the scene thus enhancing the volume and space, an idea that reinforces the movement of the fabrics carried by the protagonist. Rigaud's work was an outstanding contribution to French painting from 1688 onwards. He was especially noted for his portrait art, depicting members of the French royal family. Hyacinthe Rigaud, Portrait of the Surgeon Alexandre Passerat

    Est: €25,000 - €35,000

Inscribed on the back of the canvas: “Portrait de M Passerat” The present portrait of Alexandre Passerat by Hyazinthe Rigaud was discovered only a few years ago and published online by Stéphan Perreau in 2017 as an addendum to his catalogue raisonné that was printed four years previously (loc. cit.). Ariane James-Sarazin, whose two-volume catalogue raisonné was published in 2014, also viewed the present portrait in person and confirmed it to be a work by Rigaud (Tajan auction catalogue, December 18th, 2019). An old inscription on the back of the canvas names the sitter in our portrait, the Parisian surgeon Alexandre Passerat, who died in 1702. The book, which he leafs through with an elegant gesture, shows illustrations of a skull and a bone, a reference to his professional activity. Passerat is said to have treated, among others, the composer Jean-Baptiste Lully after he stabbed his ceremonial staff into his foot while drumming the beat and subsequently died of blood poisoning despite our sitter's best efforts. Madame de Sévigné, the famous writer of letters, referred to the surgeon as "le beau Passerat" ("the beautiful Passerat") in a correspondence from June 1683.

RIGAUD, HYACINTHE 1659 Perpignan - 1743 Paris and associate Title: Self Portrait with Palette. Date: ca. 1705-1706. Technique: Oil on canvas. Mounting: Relined. Measurement: 96 x 63cm. Frame: Framed. Verso: Inscribed on the doubling canvas. Provenance: Private ownership, Germany. When one thinks of Louis XIV's France, of fabrics and velvet in dazzling colours, of calm and deliberate elegance, one also thinks of paintings and, above all, of portraits by Hyacinthe Rigaud. Rigaud has immortalised the faces of the historical figures we all learned about at school and whose deeds have been praised by historians, extolled by novelists and sung about by poets. Hyacinthe Rigaud sums up and glorifies an unrepeatable era in his work. The artist was born in 1659 in Perpignan, far from the French capital, and became the undisputed star of French painting in the first half of the 18th century. He became best known for his depiction of the Sun King in the famous portrait of Louis XIV in his coronation robes, which earned him the appointment of court painter in 1701. From then on, he began to paint portraits of most of the prominent figures of the Ancien Régime. With his work, Rigaud celebrated not only the splendour of the Versailles court but also his loyalty to the French Bourbon dynasty, whose portraits he painted over four generations. He also worked for figures of the nobility, clergy, bourgeoisie, financiers, industrialists and ministers, helping to create an almost complete portrait gallery of the leading figures of the Kingdom of France between 1680 and 1740. A small part of his painting output consists of more discreet personalities such as friends, relatives, other artists or simply merchants. Even during his training, the young Rigaud chose the works of the Flemish painter Anton van Dyck as his sole artistic guide, whose paintings he copied and whose works he collected. Biographers and art writers are unanimous in emphasising that Rigaud's painting is indebted to that of his famous Flemish predecessor, so that the French painter is referred to as the French Van Dyck. Antoine Joseph Dezallier d'Argenville, who wrote the most comprehensive summary of the life of the most famous painters (1745), wrote after Rigaud's death that "France has lost its Van Dyck in Hyacinthe Rigaud". In view of the enormous volume of work that Rigaud had to complete in just a few years, the French painter was forced to hire collaborators from 1694 onwards to help him realise his works. Joseph Christophe, Jacques Mélingue, the engraver Claude Leroy, Nattier, Barthélemy and Hérault were among his closest collaborators in this respect and worked with him in his workshop, learning his techniques and studying his most important works. From 1695 onwards, as the number of commissions increased, Rigaud had to further increase the number of his assistants. At this point the question of Rigaud's authentic autography in his works arises. Given the precision he maintained in the details of the faces, the hands and the animation of the draperies, one can conclude, as with other important painters and portraitists of his time before and after him, that Rigaud reserved the most complex parts and the most distinctive features of his works for himself, leaving the outlines or less significant elements to his assistants. Like other artists, Rigaud made several portraits of himself: These portraits were either intended for friends or commissioned for collections of artists' portraits. The present work bears the date 1705 on the reverse, referring to the self-portrait commissioned from the painter by the Grand Duke of Tuscany Cosimo III in 1705, but which sank in the sea in 1706. According to Ariane James-Sarazin, the treatment of the face, the open shirt collar, the hand holding the palette and the gold-rimmed robe seem to be of high quality and to fit Rigaud. The wig, on the other hand, seems to the art historian to be of inferior quality, as does the depiction of the blue bow in the hair. For this reason, James-Sarazin considers this to be the work of Rigaud himself and his workshop, perhaps the work of Adrien Leprieur, or perhaps the little-known Monmorency, which is limited to the area of the hair. However, the question cannot be conclusively settled: Although Rigaud and his workshop produced some replicas of the self-portrait sunk in the sea in 1705-1706, the present work has been restored in the very part that James-Sarazin assumes to be that of the workshop. For this reason, it is unclear whether it is a modern intervention - a restorer - or an ancient intervention, i.e. Rigaud's workshop. We are grateful to Ariane James-Sarazin, Paris, for her help in cataloguing the present painting. Explanations to the Catalogue

Atelier of FRANÇOIS HYACINTHE RIGAUD (Perpignan, 1659-1743). "Portrait of Marie Casimira. Oil on canvas. Size: 130 x 104 cm. The psychological capture of deep character in the look, the point of view represented in the scene, the sumptuousness in the details of the clothes and objects, and the use of the colours between lights and shadows allow us to place the author of this work in an environment close to the school of the great French painter Hyacinthe Rigaud (1659-1743), one of the best portrait painters associated to the era of Louis XIV.
