Notre tableau représentant une scène de réjouissance mêlant les allégories du plaisir charnel à ceux des sens nous fascine par la facilité d’exécution et l’ambitieuse et originale palette utilisée. Comme souvent, cette composition est réutilisée par l’artiste avec des variantes. Une autre toile (fig. 1), anciennement chez Jan Moust à Bruges, illustre cette joyeuse compagnie, avec des variantes dans le nombre de personnages et dans les couleurs des costumes ou de la robe des chiens1. La sua produzione conta generalmente scene di vita contadina, mostrando una chiara influenza di Adriaen Brouwer e dei due David Tenier, raffigurando alchimisti, ciarlatani, calzolai, pittori e locande con contadini, ma anche feste paesane. Molte sue opere sono firmate e datate facilitando la comprensione cronologica e stilistica dal 1637 al 1661 e scorrendo il catalogo si evince che alla fine degli anni Quaranta il pittore iniziò a realizzare opere più eleganti e di maggiore complessità scenica, tralasciando i temi prettamente popolari (Cfr. B. van Haute, David III Rijckaert. A Seventeenth-Century Flemish Painter of Peasant scenes, Turnhout 1999). La tela in esame trova confronto con quella di simile soggetto della collezione Zamek Królewski a Cracovia (olio su tela, cm 84,5 x 120- inv./cat.nr 36; Cfr. https://rkd.nl/explore/images/59520). Il tema, invece, può ricordare il proverbio olandese 'Zo de ouden zongen, zo piepen ook de jongen' (Come cantava il vecchio, così il giovane suonava), cioè i bambini imparano dai genitori cose buone e cose cattive. In einem Innenraum, der durch einen Gewölbebogen und ein Feston an Tiefe gewinnt sitzt an einem Tisch eine Frau mit weißer Haube und geöffnetem Westerwälder Steinzeugkrug, aus dem sie soeben ein Stangenglas wohl nicht das erste Mal am Tag gefüllt hat. Der Maler war Schüler seines Vaters David Ryckaert II (1586-1642) und wurde bekannt durch seine Handwerker-, Bauern- und Gesellschaftsbilder. The present suggestive scene, from the hand of the Flemish genre master David Ryckaert III, with its bold colouring, dramatic costumes and trompe l’oeil effects is a fascinating example of the master’s diverse oeuvre. The archaic costume of the minstrel, replete with the hidden sexual symbolism implied by the act of making music, along with the theatrical setting, immediately captivates the viewer. Indeed, the spatial effects employed by Ryckaert here – on right the scarlet curtain apparently draped over the picture plane, and on the left, the bucolic view, which could either be a genuine staircase leading down to the paysage behind or simply a painted backdrop - render the whole setting a sort of theatrical stage, are most intriguing. Finally, the brilliance with which he renders the foreground still-life details, such as the clay wine jar, lend the whole composition a carefully conceived balance. Van Haute suggests a date of execution for the present work between 1650 and 1653 (see literature). David Ryckaert III was born to a famous Antwerp artistic dynasty. He was one of Flanders’s leading painters of genre scenes, along with Adriaen Brouwer and David Teniers II. Furthermore, in spite of their styles differing tremendously, Peter Paul Rubens thought highly enough of Ryckaert to commission him to assist in the decorations required for the final triumphal arch for the Joyous Entry of Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand into Antwerp in 1635. Among Ryckaert’s pupils were Erasmus de Bie and Jacobe Lafosse II.

(Antwerp 1612–1661) Jupiter and Mercury with Philemon and Baucis, oil on panel, 54 x 80 cm, framed Provenance: sale, Sotheby’s, Amsterdam, 2 November 2004, lot 112 (as David Ryckaert III); where acquired by the present owner The present painting is registered in the RKD database under no. 0000279802 (as David Ryckaert III). The composition of the present painting of Philemon and Baucis, derives from Ovid’s Metamorphoses (Ovid, Met. VIII, 621–96) – a popular subject in seventeenth-century Flemish art: Jupiter and Mercury came disguised as ordinary peasants and asked the townspeople of Tyana for a place to sleep for the night, however they were turned away by all inhabitants. Only Philemon and his wife Baucis, an old couple living in a poor hut on the outskirts of the town, show hospitality, take them in and treat them to everything they have. As they recognise their guests as gods by the fact that the wine jug miraculously fills, they decide to sacrifice their only goose to them – which is the exact moment Ryckaert depicts in the present painting. In keeping with the story and yet alienating into the seventeenth-century-reality, the artist situates the mythologic scene in a genre setting. The artist displays his skill in great detail, on the table appears a bulging fruit basket, – which is actually diametrically opposed to the story about the poor people – in the foreground clay jars and baskets are shown, also a rough-woven carpet – all objects in which Ryckaert’s material consciousness comes to bear. In addition, the warm palette with individual colour accents, the harmonious composition and also the fine modelling are characteristic for the artist’s oeuvre. David Ryckaert III grew up in a family of artists, his father David II and his uncle Marten made a living as professional artists. As soon as he could handle a brush, he was apprenticed in his father’s Antwerp workshop and after the admission to the Guild of St. Luke in 1636/37 he started working as an independent master, concentrating on genre and still-life paintings.

Der Verbleib des originalen Querformats unter der Nummer A74 ist heute unbekannt. Obwohl die Kopie in den meistens Details wie Kleidung und Werkzeug des Schusters sowie in den sich am Boden oder an der Wand befindenden Elementen exakt mit dem Original übereinstimmt, unterscheidet sie sich im Format sehr von dem Original. Unser Gemälde (C22) ist nämlich nur die Kopie der linken Hälfte des originalen Gemäldes von David Ryckaert. Durch diese Teilung wird aus dem Querformat ein Hochformat. Der rechte Teil mit Bäuerin und drei weiteren Personen am Feuer im Hintergrund fehlt. Der Schuster wird in dieser Kopie stark in den Fokus gerückt. Die niedergeschlagenen Augen des Mannes sind auffällig geschwärzt und umrissen. Die zu seiner Rechten liegenden Werkzeuge bilden eine schöne stilllebenhafte Komposition. Viste le importanti dimensioni e l’altissima qualità pittorica, supponiamo che l’opera in questione sia figlia di una commissione estremamente importante per il pittore e che essa sia da annoverare tra le sue massime espressioni. Membro di una famiglia di artisti, David III fu figlio di David Ryckaert II, nonchè nipote di David Ryckaert I e Martin Ryckaert. Fu allievo del padre, diventando poi maestro nella Corporazione di San Luca ad Anversa nel 1636-1637. Tra i suoi allievi vi furono Hans la Croys, Jacob Lafosse II e Erasmus de Bie. Ebbe molto successo in vita, e tra i suoi committenti annoverò l'arciduca Leopoldo Guglielmo d'Austria, governatore dei Paesi Bassi meridionali dal 1647 al 1656. David Ryckaert III, who worked in Antwerp, was the most important Flemish genre painter of the mid-17th century, after Adriaen Brouwer and David Teniers. A shoemaker works in an interior on the left. Finished shoes hang on a shelf on the wall behind him. Small pieces of leather lie on the floor; larger ones lean against the table, or lie on it. His wife sits at the spinning edge and spins yarn. The couple is old. In the background on the right, three men linger by a fireplace; two seated, one man in the center standing with his back to the fire to warm himself. A copper engraving hangs on the chimney mantle. In the foreground on the right, the painter has placed a still life of kitchenware, including a Chinese porcelain bowl. The woman with the spinning wheel also appears similarly in a painting by Ryckaert in the Simferopol Art Museum, Simferapol, inv. no. Ж-386 (RDK database, artwork no. 282902).
