    John Riley (British, 1646-1691) William Chiffinch (c.1602–1691), Master of the Wardrobe to Charles II oil on canvas 60 x 50cm Provenance: Sotheby's, London, British Paintings, 17th July 1985, Lot 506, as 'Portrait of a gentleman' by John Riley William Chiffinch was an indispensable figure to Charles II, holding a number of offices at court, including Surveyor of the King’s Pictures, Keeper of the King’s Jewels and Master of the Hawks. He was also renowned for his mastery of intrigue and was involved in many court plots and matters pertaining to the King’s mistresses. He continued his roles within the royal household under James II but fell out of favour after the Glorious Revolution due to suspicions of Jacobitism. Indeed, his daughter Barbara was to become an active Jacobite. Another version of the present composition is in the Dulwich Picture Gallery (DPG568).

A great fellow to have watching your home! Provenance: Purchased from London auction house in the 1980's and since has been hanging in the Jack and Peggy McDowell estate on the Chattahoochee River in Atlanta.

    Attributed John  Riley (1646-1691) Portrait of Prince George of Denmark (1653-1708) Oil on canvas In a gilded sunderland frame John Riley emerged as leading court portraitist during the period between the death of Peter Lely in 1680 and the ascendency of Godfrey Kneller, with whom he was appointed joint Principal Painter to William III and Mary II in 1688. Prince George of Denmark was the younger brother of Christian V of Denmark. He married Queen Anne in 1683 and was described by the diarist John Evelyn as having 'the Danish Countenance, blound; a young man of few words, seemed somewhat heavy; but reported Valient '. Here Prince George is shown in semi-classical costume, wearing a breastplate with the ribbon of the Garter and holding a baton. This military image was appropriate to his position as Lord High Admiral and generalissimo of land and sea forces, to which he was appointed on his wife 's accession in 1702.     Attributed to John Riley (British, 1646-1691) Portrait of a gentleman (possibly a judge or a magistrate) half length in red with ermine oil on canvas h:74 w: 62 cm Provenance: By descent at The Manor House, Chatteris, and thence to Denston Hall, Suffolk, by 1908. The sitter is possibly James Cudworth (1604-1682), recorded as a magistrate from North Yorkshire, whose relation, Anne, married Nathaniel Johnstone (see Lot 519).

The sitter died in 1712 and his granddaughter, Sarah, married the then owner of Dullingham.
