Frank Rinehart Original 1898 Indian Photograph Photogravures By Ga Grinnell 1900 Chief Swift Dog

    Est: -

8x11.5 Frank Rinehart original 1898 photograph photogravures from a portfolio put together by G.A. Grinnell in 1900 and sold in very limited quantities. These large photographs of American Indian chiefs are from a private collection and seldom come on the market. G.A. Grinnell was an American Anthropologist, historian, naturalist and writer. Grinnell had extensive contact with the terrain, animals and native Americans of the northern plains. He also accompanied George A. Custer 1874 Black Hills expedition as a naturalist. Frank A. Rinehart the photographer was an American artist famous for his photographs, drawings and paintings depicting native Americans. Rinehart's portraist are especially impressive as a departure from earlier, less sensitive photographs of Native Americans. Instead of being detached, ethnographic records, the Rinehart photographs are portraits of individuals with an emphasis on strength of expression. While Rinehart was not the first photographers to portray Indian subjects with such dignity, this large body of work which was widely seen and distributed may have had an important influence in changing subsequent portrayals of Native Americans.
