Fish Vendor signed and dated 1990 (lower right) oil on canvas 30" x 42" (76 cm x 107 cm) Leon Gallery wishes to thank Mrs. Fatima Antonio Baquiran for confirming the authenticity of this lot PROVENANCE Private collection, USA Widely renowned for his vivid and colorful depictions of Filipino folk genres, ranging from market vendors, family life, and rural scenes, Angelito Antonio continues to celebrate ordinary Filipino people and communal resilience by creating masterpieces that abstractly reflect the daily routine and Filipino labor, reflecting the inseparable relationship between people and nature. Signed around 1990, Antonio presents a dense, claustrophobic composition that portrays a female figure seated on the left, in front of her goods—possibly a vendor — while a cluster of fish occupies the center-right space, and the object and figures overlap and blend within the canvas. Establishing visual rhythm and surface harmony between the subjects and the background. Turning the simple, familiar subject into a complex arrangement of shapes, color, and rhythms, Antonio creates a masterpiece that is both recognizable and abstract at the same time. By establishing the unbreakable relationship between nature (represented by the fish caught and displayed) and the people (the woman preparing and selling it for profit) as a major factor in everyday life, Antonio not only offers a stylized snapshot of Filipino daily life but also depicts the fusion between the subjects and the background—the harmony between man and nature.
