Biography from the Archives of askART: A Paris-born painter and printmaker, Manuel Robbe was noted for his experimental approach to printmaking, and during his career created more than 200 aquatints and drypoints. He was a great technician, "inventing a technique known as "sugar-life" which gave his prints a startling subtlety. Robbe's technique was developed over several phases. He printed his design with a mixture of sugar, India ink and gum Arabic, on his zinc plate. This was followed by heating the plate and working with the soft-ground etching process until the desired result was achieved. Finally, Robbe painted the subject on the zinc plate with an oil paint brush. For this process he used a special brush made of rags, which was called 'a la poupée' (with a doll). This process was used by French engravers of the 18th century. In completing his image, Robbe used his fingers to play with the tone on the zinc plate, whereby many of these color prints appear completely unique. He arrived at new shades of color every time he pulled an impression; for example, park scenes appear in spring colors and also in colors associated with autumn." (Christopher Clark) Robbe did images of daily life, especially of beautifully gowned women of obvious comfortable means with their children or involved in leisure activities such as looking in mirrors or perusing artwork. He also did some landscape subjects. With his images, Robbe reflected "la belle époque" or a happy, peaceful time in France at the end of the 19th century and early 20th century before the outbreak of World War I when spririts were relatively high because life seemed peaceful and progressive. He was born in Paris to French parents, refugees from the Franco-Prussion War, from Berthune in northern France. Robbe attended the Académie Julian and the Ecole des Beaux Arts and was mentored in his etching and aquatint methods by Eugene Delâtre. By 1898, he was exhibiting at the Salon of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, having changed his commitment from the Societé des Artistes Français. Along with Jacques Villon, Robbe was promoted by Edmond Sagot, Parisian publisher who was one of the most prominent print publishers in western culture at the turn of the century. Before 1914, Robbe completed a large number of aquatints in color as well as in black and white, and for his excellence received a Gold Medal at the 1900 Universal Exhibition. During World War I, he was a pilot, and after the war, his art career waned because of increasing focus on modernist movements such as Cubism and because of his basic shyness that meant he did not aggressively promote his work. He turned his atelier into a commercial printing shop that has continued into the 21st century. Biography from Armstrong Fine Art: A pseudonym of artist Manuel Robbe, "Alphonse Lafitte" was the name Robbe used when signing more idyllic works later in his life. Most of the works attributed to Lafitte are seascapes and the coastal area of French Brittany. It is hypothesized that he used this pseudonym to separate these landscapes from Robbe's reputation of creating portraits. Historically known for his lack of self-promotion, Robbe/Lafitte's legacy is more muted than one would expect from such an obvious artistic talent.

He studied both at the Académie Julian and the École des Beaux Arts in Paris where he was mentored in etching and aquatint methods by Eugene Delâtre. He exhibited in Paris regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français and was awarded a bronze medal in 1900 at the Exposition Universelle in Paris. Leaving that salon in 1905, Robbe became a member of the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts. He chiefly worked in the medium of colored aquatint engravings in which he had become quite accomplished. He was an innovator of the experimental "à la poupée" process of printing many colors from a single plate which gave his prints a startling subtlety, each print having its own uniqueness. Robbe's favorite themes were of scenes of Paris life, scenes of streets animated by young parisiennes of the Belle Époque and young women and children engaging in the social activities of the day. His prints were designed to be framed and hung on the wall just like oil paintings.

Signed bottom right. Condition: Image is in good shape. Frame shows significant damage on all edges, with some broken parts saved in a baggie. Commensurate with age. Overall Size: 33 x 26 1/4 in. Sight Size: 10 1/2 x 15 in. Frame Thickness: 1 1/2 in. Emmanuel Robbe (known professionally as Manuel Robbe) was born on December 16th, 1872 in Paris. He attended the Lycée Condorcet, where he became friends with Gaston de Pawlowski, and then transferred to the Lycée Louis-le-Grand, one of the best grammar schools in France. He then became a pupil at the Académie Julian before transferring to the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in order to pursue etching. There he learned the finer points of aquatint from the master etcher Eugène Delâtre. He exhibited regularly at the salons of the Société des Artistes Français and was awarded a bronze medal at the 1900 World Exhibition for his work. Robbe quickly became a successful etcher, specializing in the aquatint technique. He exhibited regularly at the salons of the Société des Artistes Français, and the Parisian dealers Edmond Sagot, Georges Petit, and Georges Pierrefort published and distributed his work. His drawings were published in Cocorico (1898-1900) and Le Frou-frou (1901-1902). Over the course of his artistic career, Manuel Robbe created hundreds of aquatint etchings, drypoint etchings, and advertising posters, as well as works in other techniques including oil paintings, watercolors, and pastels. He was also an avid sportsman, serving as captain of the Beaux-Arts fencing team at the inter-professional championships in Paris in 1912. In World War I he enlisted in the French Air Force and was awarded the Croix de guerre for his service, and several prints after this period depicted German and French military aircraft. In his later years Robbe developed a love of travelling and spent many summers in Brittany, which he captured in many prints and drawings. He suffered from an incurable illness that eventually led to his death on July 5th, 1936 in the 18th arrondissement of Paris, not far from where he was born.
