Leopold Robert è un pittore ed incisore svizzero, naturalizzato in Francia. Si forma a Parigi nell’atelier di Jacques Louis David, dove impara anche le tecniche di incisione. Soggiorna diverse volte in Italia a partire dal 1818, soprattutto a Napoli e a Roma. Nel 1831 trionfa al Salon di Parigi e ottiene dal re di Francia la croce della Legion d’honneur. Riscuote molto successo tra gli aristocratici perché incarna l’animo del pittore romantico. Ispira anche Victor Hugo e Lamartine con le sue opere. Si suicida nel 1835 per Charlotte Bonaparte, nipote di Napoleone, che non ricambia il suo amore. Si innamora di lei, infatti, durante le pose per la realizzazione di un suo ritratto ufficiale. Le sue opere sono conservate in importanti Musei, Louvre compreso, e in prestigiose collezioni private nel mondo. cm 46 x 37.

Follower of LOUIS LÉOPOLD ROBERT (France, 1794 - Venice, 1835). "Gallant scene". Oil on canvas. Signed. Measurements: 73 x 60 cm; 100 x 79 cm (frame). Intimate and narrative scene, where two figures, a young man dressed in popular clothes and a woman concentrated in her sewing work, establish a dialogue full of emotional subtlety. From the technical point of view, the work shows a precise drawing and a warm palette, with special attention to textiles and costume details, characteristic traits of Robert's followers. The lighting, soft and enveloping, contributes to highlight the main figures without breaking the harmony of the whole. Louis Léopold Robert was a Swiss painter who began his artistic training as an apprentice in Yverdon-les-Bains (Vaud). In 1810, he moved to Paris, where he began as a writer's apprentice. However it is known that in 1812 he joined the workshop of Jacques-Louis David began, where he began to paint and learn engraving, winning a second prize in Rome in 1814. At the fall of the Empire, Neuchâtel, his hometown, became part of Prussia and Leopold Robert lost his French nationality, thus being out of competition for the Grand Prix of Rome where he was working for the first prize. He returned to La Chaux-de-Fonds where he abandoned the chisel to devote himself to painting and painted many portraits that increased his reputation among the Neuchâtel bourgeoisie. Francis Roulet Mézerac, his generous patron, allowed him to continue his painting studies in Rome. In 1825, he attended the workshop of Juliette Recamier, on his trip to Naples, where a large family of bourgeois served as models and compositions of Italian scenes that earned him admiration and an elite clientele. He even worked on one of the representations of the four seasons and the four largest countries of Italy for the Salon of painting and sculpture in Paris. In 1829, he returned to Italy to visit the Pontine Lagoons where he met Louis II of Holland and his wife Charlotte Napoleon Bonaparte. After different stays and trips, in 1832 he went to the Papal States. Then he went to Florence. After this trip he began his last monumental composition, that of the winter season, The departure of the fishermen of the Adriatic, inspired by Victor Hugo and Alphonse de Lamartine.

Léopold Robert widmete sich zu Beginn der 1820er-Jahre dem Thema der gesetzlosen Briganten. Zwischen 1818 und 1835 hielt sich Robert in Italien auf, wo ihn insbesondere das Räuberleben faszinierte, was ihn dazu bewegte, Darstellungen von Vagabunden anzufertigen, die den zeitgenössischen Geschmack trafen und einen Einfluss auch auf nachfolgende Künstler ausübten. Mit unserer Darstellung vergleichbare Gemälde befinden sich unter anderem im Musée des Beaux-Arts in La Chaux-de-Fonds (Inv.-Nr. 738) und dem Musée d’Art et d’Histoire in Genf (Inv.-Nr. 1930-0019). Eine Beteiligung von Leopolds Bruder und Malerkollege Aurèle (1805–1871) bei dem hier angebotenen Werk, der es nachträglich auch betitelt und datiert haben könnte, ist gut möglich. Ariane Maradan bestätigt die Eigenhändigkeit des Gemäldes nach Prüfung des Originals, wofür wir ihr danken.

Jhs. nach dem berühmten, 1830 geschaffenen Werk Roberts, das er 1831 mit triumphalem Erfolg im Salon in Paris zeigte, wo es von König Louis Philippe erworben wurde und sich seit 1835 im Louvre befindet. Der 1810-1816 in Paris von Jacques-Louis David ausgebildete Maler ging 1818 nach Rom. Dort malte er als erster Künstler unmittelbar das Volksleben der italienischen Landbevölkerung und wurde zum "Begründer des italienischen Sittenbildes" (Zit. Thieme-Becker), wodurch er zu europäischer Berühmtheit gelangte. Öl/Lwd.; Auf einem Sack des beladenen Wagens monogr. "CA" mit Krone. 81 cm x 130 cm. BIOGRAPHY: He was born at La Chaux-de-Fonds in Switzerland, but left his native place with the engraver Jean Girardet at the age of sixteen for Paris.He was on the eve of obtaining the grand prix for engraving when the events of 1815 blasted his hopes, for Neuchatel was restored to Prussia, and Robert was struck off the list of competitors as a foreigner. Whilst continuing his studies under Girardet he had never ceased to frequent the studio of David, and he now determined to become a painter, and only returned to his native country when his master himself was exiled. At Neuchatel he attracted the notice of Roullet de Mezerac, who enabled him by a timely loan to proceed to Rome. In depicting the customs and life of the people, of southern Italy especially, he showed peculiar feeling for the historical characteristics of their race.After executing many detached studies of Italian life Robert conceived the idea of painting four great works which should represent at one and the same time the four seasons in Italy and the four leading races of its people. In the Return from the Fete of the Madonna dell'Arco (Louvre) he depicted the Neapolitans and the spring. This picture, exhibited at the Salon of 1827, achieved undoubted success and was bought for the Luxembourg by Charles X; but the work which appeared in 1831, the Summer Reapers arriving in the Pontine Marshe (Louvre), which became the property of Louis Phillippe, established the artist's reputation.Florence and her autumn vineyards should now have furnished him with his third subject. He attempted to begin it, but, unable to conquer his passion for Princess Charlotte Napoleon (then mourning the violent death of her husband, Robert's devoted friend), he threw up his work and went to Venice, where he began and carried through the fourth of the series, the Fishers of the Adriatic. This work was not equal to the Reapers. Worn by the vicissitudes of painful feeling, and bitterly discouraged, Robert committed suicide before his easel on 20 March 1835, on the tenth anniversary of the melancholy suicide of a brother to whom he had been much attached.There are a number of references to Robert's paintings in the novel The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, one being specifically to The Reapers.
