Measurements: 18.5 x 27.5 cm; 47 x 56 cm (frame). he composition shows a wild scene dominated by waterfalls, rocks and a rustic architecture that seems to be integrated in an organic way in the environment. The choice of a mountainous and dynamic landscape, with water in constant movement, suggests the indomitable force of nature, one of the central themes of the romantic landscape. David Roberts, an emblematic painter of English Romantic landscape painting, traveled between 1832 and 1833 in Spain, Morocco and Tangier. On his return to London, his watercolors were made known to the general public through their translation into engraving and lithography, under the name of Picturesque Sketches in Spain During the Years 1832 and 1833, and became very popular among a public intensely interested in the exotic and the oriental world. Thanks to his mastery of scenography, as he had worked in the theatrical field in his early years as a painter, Roberts achieved very effective compositions, adopting peculiar points of view.

He completed his sketches over an 11 month journey between 1838 and 1839. “Roberts’ Holy Land has a worldwide reputation; nothing of a similar character has ever been produced that can bear a comparison with it” (Ran, 6) ... “These prints are of excellence unsurpassed in Europe… The firm of Day and Haghe raised lithography to perhaps the highest point it ever attained… [In Roberts’ own words,] ‘Haghe has not only surpassed himself, but all that has hitherto been done of a similar nature. He has rendered the views in a style clear, simple, and unlabored, with a masterly vigor and boldness which none but a painter like him could have transferred to stone” (Abbey, 340-41).
