Dorothy Napangardi (1952- 2013) was a highly regarded Warlpiri artist born around Mina Mina, west of Mt Doreen and Yuendumu in the Northern Territory. Dorothy Napangardi began painting ‘bush tucker’ designs in 1987 when her children were still quite young and well after she moved from her ancestral Warlpiri homelands into Alice Springs, where she has lived the greater part of her life.

Later Dorothy Napangardi began experimenting with her painting technique. This, along with visits back into her homelands in the 1990s, allowed her to refine her visual representation of her Jukurrpa (Dreamings) and stories associated with Mina Mina, culminating in the finely patterned, minimal paintings for which she is now so widely recognised.

Dorothy Napangardi’s Jukurrpa includes Salt Pan images and Digging Stick Dreaming (Karnta-Kurlangu). In 2001, Dorothy Napangardi won the coveted Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award for a black and white work, Salt on Mina Mina. In 2002, she was presented a major painting survey at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney. Dorothy Napangardi’s innovative and distinctive painting style has earned her a reputation as one of the most important Aboriginal artists working today.

Mina Mina is a significant women's ceremonial site near Lake Mackay in the Tanami Desert, north-west of Yuendumu. It is associated with Karntakurlangu (belonging to women) and the ancestral journeys of Napangardi and Napanangka women. Across her career, Napangardi returned to this story, gradually refining its expression through an increasingly distilled visual language. Here, fine networks of white traverse a deep black ground, evoking the expansive claypans and salt lakes of Mina Mina, as well as the sinuous pathways of ngalyipi (snake vine, Tinospora smilacina), a plant central to women's ceremony. With its restrained palette and rhythmic composition, the work conveys Napangardi's understanding of Country as both a physical and ceremonial space.     DOROTHY NAPANGARDI c. 1952 - 2013 Women's Ceremony 1998 synthetic polymer paint on canvas Mina Mina is where the Karntakurlangu Jukurrpa begins. At this women's ceremonial site near Lake Mackay in the Tanami Desert, ancestral women of the Napangardi and Napanangka skin groups gathered, took up digging sticks that had emerged from the ground, and danced eastward through the country. A stand of desert oaks now marks the place where those sticks rose. Napangardi was born at Mina Mina in the early 1950s, the daughter of a Pintupi father and a Warlpiri mother, and spent her early childhood there. In 1957 a patrol officer pressured the family to move to Yuendumu. She eventually settled in Alice Springs, where she began painting in 1987. The decisive shift came around 1997 when she returned to Mina Mina for the first time in years. This canvas belongs to the very opening of that transformation. Two focal points anchor the composition, one in the upper third and one in the lower, from which fine white dots radiate outward in dense concentric arcs across a warm red-brown ground. The surface is built up with extraordinary patience, the dotting layered until the canvas holds a physical weight. Writing in the Catalogue for Dancing Up Country: The Art of Dorothy Napangardi, Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, 2002, Christine Nicholls described Napangardi's achievement as lying in her ability to evoke a strong sense of movement on her canvases, an effect she achieves because of her remarkable spatial sense and compositional ability. Here the country is alive with the passage of ancestral women. Her work is held in the National Gallery of Australia, the National Gallery of Victoria, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

Her refined, minimalistic compositions – often portraying Karntakurlangu, or Women's Dreaming – brought her critical and popular acclaim, and established her as one of the foremost figures in contemporary Aboriginal art. This painting refers to her father's Country at Lake Mackay. Interlaced networks of fine dotted lines create a topographical and ancestral map of the terrain, representing both the salt-encrusted clay pans of the desert and the ceremonial journeys undertaken by Napangardi and Napanangka women during the Jukurrpa (Dreaming). These women – aunt and niece – gathered digging sticks that had emerged from the desert oak trees, performing rituals of song and dance as they moved across Country to the site of Jankinyi.
