  • Sheila Robinson (British, 1925-1988) 'Literary London', 1951
    Oct. 07, 2026

Sheila Robinson (British, 1925-1988) 'Literary London', 1951

    Est: £600 - £900

Sheila Robinson (British, 1925-1988) 'Literary London', 1951 a pair of lithographic posters in colours designed by Robinson for London Transport, depicting houses of the writers Keats, Dickens, Carlyle and Johnson (visible 101 x 61cm; framed 105 x 65cm) (2) Footnote: Sheila Robinson was a British artist and illustrator, one of the celebrated Great Bardfield Artists and a lecturer at the Royal College of Art. Following her death, the RCA created the Sheila Robinson Drawing Prize in her honour. These two posters were among the first commissions Sheila Robinson undertook. She studied in the Design School at the Royal College of Art from 1946 to 1949, having been awarded an extra year. In 1950, London Transport - under the renewed impetus of Publicity Officer Harold Hutchison - commissioned her to produce several posters. As had been the case for many years, the organisation was keen to collaborate with talented artists fresh out of art school. For both of these designs, Robinson used her distinctive cardboard relief and linocut printmaking techniques to create the different elements of the image, before assembling them into a final collaged artwork. Catalogued in the London Transport Museum, reference number 1983/4/6416. Condition Report: Some paper loss and tears. Light creasing and time staining. Not viewed out of glazed frames.

▲ Sheila Robinson (British, 1925-1988) Proof for an unused stamp design for the British Rural Architecture stamp series, 1970

    Est: £300 - £500

▲ Sheila Robinson (British, 1925-1988) Proof for an unused stamp design for the British Rural Architecture stamp series, 1970 linocut (11.5 x 16cm; framed 14 x 18cm) Footnote: In February 1969, the Post Office Stamp Advisory Committee began planning the 1970 stamps programme. Following the launch of the British Architecture series with the Cathedrals issue in May 1969, the committee felt the theme was worth continuing and likely to be commercially successful. Various subjects were discussed, including Tudor Buildings, Ancient Monuments, National Trust Properties and Stately Homes. To provide contrast with the cathedral designs, it was agreed to avoid large, imposing buildings and instead focus on more modest town houses or country cottages. Sheila Robinson was among five artists invited to submit designs, alongside Richard Downer, Peter Gauld, Ronald Maddox, David Gentleman and Keith Hensby. Two of her designs, 'Welsh Stucco' and 'Ulster Thatch', were selected. Although the Post Office did not allow them to be issued as editions, a number of proofs were produced for each. Although the precise location depicted here is uncertain, the building may possibly be a house in Thaxted. We are grateful to Chloe Cheese for her kind assistance with the cataloguing of this lot. Condition Report: Not viewed out of glazed frame. Ink not strongly printed throughout - unsurprising for a proof that was meant for public.
