  • Laurence Roche Gouache on Board - Derelict Depot
    Oct. 24, 2025

Laurence Roche Gouache on Board - Derelict Depot

    Est: $700 - $1,050

**Originally Listed At $400** Laurence Roche (Welsh, b. 1944). Derelict depot. Acrylic on heavy paper, n.d. Signed at lower right. A haunting acrylic on paper by Welsh artist Laurence Roche, this work portrays an abandoned railway building silhouetted against a stark yellow sky. The derelict structure, with its weathered canopy and boarded windows, sits surrounded by overgrown weeds and rusting telegraph poles, while in the far distance a solitary signal box echoes the theme of isolation. A former President of the Guild of Railway Artists, Roche is celebrated for his ability to capture both the grandeur and the decline of industrial landscapes. Here, he renders the forgotten architecture of the railways with a striking balance of realism and atmosphere. The composition's sparse horizon and muted palette create an almost cinematic sense of desolation, inviting reflection on the passage of time and the fading presence of once vital structures. Size of painting: 16" W x 9.75" H (40.6 cm x 24.8 cm); of frame: 22" W x 16" H (55.9 cm x 40.6 cm) Framed under glass, this painting exemplifies Roche's enduring fascination with railways and his gift for transforming industrial decay into poignant visual poetry. About the artist: A Welsh painter, Laurence Roche was born in 1944 in Goodwicke, Pembrokeshire. He first studied at Swansea College of Art from 1962 to 1965, then continued his training at Edinburgh College of Art for a further three years. After qualifying as an art teacher in Edinburgh, he went on to teach in Reading and Colchester before dedicating himself fully to painting in 1979. Roche became President of the Guild of Railway Artists between 1998 and 2002. His work often focuses on railways, industrial subjects, landscapes, and seascapes, reflecting both technical precision and a strong sense of atmosphere. In the early 1990s, he served as artist-in-residence at Allied Steel and Wire, and a number of his paintings have been released in print form. Today, four of his works are held in the National Collection, with two in the University of Warwick Art Collection and two at Edinburgh College of Art.
