    Roget (John Lewis) Sketches, c.37pp. of sketches, including the Lake District and North London, mostly pen and ink, a few pencil, 'Sunset seen from my bedroom window 33 Regent Square' with watercolour, autograph captions, some offsetting, contemporary red calf, metal clasp, rubbed and marked, sheet size 95 x 163mm., 1840; Cornwall, c.23pp. pencil sketches, a few loose, autograph captions, contemporary morocco-backed cloth, gilt, autograph label to upper cover, sheet size 89 x 133mm., 1887; and 3 other albums by the same, including Switzerland, 1844 and Brighton and Worthing, 1870, v.s. (5) *** A charming little group of Roget's sketchbooks. John Lewis Roget (1828-1908), watercolourist, historian of the British School of watercolours, and son of Peter Mark Roget, creator of Roget's Thesaurus.     Ireland.- Roget (John Lewis, 1828-1908) Collection of 52 landscape studies from a Tour of Ireland, black chalk, pencil, the majority heightened with white, all signed with initials and inscribed with date and location in ink, neatly presented onto 32 loose album sheets, various sizes between 60 x 50 mm (2 1/4 x 2 in) and 250 x 175 mm (9 3/4 x 6 7/8 in), the album leaves each approx. 270 x 375 mm (10 5/8 x 14 3/4 in), some minor spotting and surface dirt, loose, presented in contemporary portfolio, spine broken and detached, worn, folio, [circa 1850]; together with a group of 53 original ink illustrations of Irish figures, possibly encountered by Roget on his tour but possibly executed by another hand, neatly presented over six loose album leaves, one sheet inscribed in ink 'Recollections of Ireland in 1850', pen and black inks, some pencil, many inscribed and dated, each album leave approx. 260 x 350 mm (10 1/4 x 13 3/4 in), some minor browning and surface dirt, all unframed, [circa 1850] ⁂ Many of the landscapes executed by Roget are from the Killarney National Park, Co. Kerry, Ireland, including the Eagles Nest, Gap of Dunloe, O'Sullivan's Cascade, the Lower Lake Killarney, with others from Co. Cork, and Co. Wicklow.

    Mathematics.- Roget (John Lewis) A Familiar Interpretation of the language of Mathematics, autograph title in ink, half-title 'Mathematics', 41 humorous visualisations of mathematical terms (each c. 95 x 80mm., and captioned in ink beneath), and a tail-piece in pen and ink and watercolour, occasional spotting or light staining, all mounted into a contemporary boards album (an unused Latin exercise book with 'Latin' in ink to upper cover), the artist's name and date of 1844 to engraved decorative label on the upper cover, 1845; and a copy of the 1859 edition of the published work, small 4to & small oblong 4to (2) ⁂ Original drawings for some of the illustrations found in Familiar Illustrations of the Language of Mathematics, 1850. Familiar Illustrations of the Language of Mathematics, or, A new Picture-alphabet for well-behaved Undergraduates, pictorial title and 9 plates, all illustrated by the authors, light spotting damp mottling to foot, original pictorial wrappers, spine worn, covers a little browned and soiling, remains of sticker to upper cover, oblong folio, 1850. ⁂ A scarce and charming work filled with satiric visualisations of mathematical terms. We can trace only a handful of copies at auction.

    ROGET, John Lewis (1828-1908). Sketches of Deal, Walmer, and Sandwich ... With an Introduction and Notes by S. R. Roget. London: Longmans, Green and Co., 1911. 4to (213 x 158mm). Half title, coloured frontispiece, half tone portrait of the author, and 38 plates, most coloured. Original green buckram gilt, top edges gilt, others uncut (a few light stains to upper cover). Provenance: "Florence Kate Rickword, from Gerry, Deal, Kent. Sept: 1923" (inscription on front free endpaper); modern presentation slip attached to front pastedown with adhesive tape. According to a pencil note, Florence Rickword was the wife of Edgell Rickword, poet.
