      Est: €1,400 - €1,600

LEOPOLDO ROMANACH (Sierra Morena, Villa Clara, 1862 - Havana, 1951). "Marina". Oil on canvas. Re-coloured. With label on the back of the Cuban Ministry of Culture. Work restored by the Museum of Havana. It has slight restorations, repainting and superficial dirt. Measurements: 26 x 33 cm; 44,5 x 51 cm (frame). 19th century. Although he was orphaned at the age of five and was taken to live in Spain, from then on, his love for the Cuban landscape is clearly represented in his attempts to put it down on paper, contrary to his father's wishes, who wanted to send him into the world of commerce. He returns to Cuba at the age of 14 and is then sent to the United States to study English and commerce, but due to his artistic hobby he abandons his studies and returns to Cuba without much success. He then convinces Miguel Melero, director of the San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts, to allow him to enter the Academy to take colouring classes. On his return to Caibarién, Francisco Ducassi encouraged him to follow his vocation and got him a scholarship to the School of Fine Arts in Rome, Italy, where he was taught by Enrique Serra, Francisco Pradilla and Filippo Prosperi, director of the school. After graduating and returning to Cuba, he became a professor of the Colouring Chair at the Academy of Fine Arts and then travelled to Paris to study the new pictorial theories of Impressionism, which changed the traditional teaching methods of the academy. The first stage of his work shows a marked tendency towards a pathetic conception influenced by the social-historical moment in which he developed and includes works such as: Nest of Misery, The Convalescent, The Abandoned and others. In the second period the new advances in pictorial technique, trichromy and impressionism are more marked. For his artistic work Romañach won numerous awards, for example, a bronze medal at the "Universal Exhibition in Paris", 1900; a gold medal at the St. Louis, Missouri Exhibition in 1904; a silver medal at the Buffalo Exhibition, 1904; a gold medal in Charleston; first prize in Cuba, 1912; in Panama, 1915 and Seville in 1929. For all these results he was awarded the title of Member of the International Artistic Circle of Rome, Full Member of the National Academy of Arts and Letters of Cuba, the Medal of Honour of the Circle of Fine Arts and the Cross of the Order of Carlos Manuel de Céspedes. For his achievements he was named Emeritus Professor of his Chair and Honorary Director of the San Alejandro National School of Fine Arts and its Annex.
