Alabaster or Marble Sculpture of Woman, Signed.

The back is signed, "Made in Italy, P.O. Romanelli". It may be by or in the style of Pasquale Romanelli (Italian, 1812-1887). The woman's head and limbs are white; the dress and base are brown. There are several chips and scratches throughout, and she has had her right arm and left fingers repaired. She is missing her left thumb (it is included, if you wish to reattach it). Pasquale Romanelli (Italian, 1812-1887), Life Size Carved Marble Bust of A Beauty Florence, Italy, 1881, carved white marble, signature with date and 'Firenze' incised to verso, mounted upon a polished white marble plinth. Sculpture dimensions 24 x 18 x 12 in.; Plinth 5 x 9 1/2 (excluding rod) At 15 years old, Pasquale Romanelli entered the studio runned by Master Sculptor Luigi Pampaloni and later moved to Lorenzo Bartolini’s studio in Borgo San Frediano. After Bartolini passed, Pasquale was often selected to complete the projects of Barolini's studio. Best known for his sculptures of allegorical, biblical and mythological figures of women, Romanelli also created monumental works including the monument to Vittorio Fossombroni for the Piazza di S. Francesco in Arezzo (1863) and the monument of Count Alessandro Masi for the Certosa of Ferrara (1864). He exhibited his works Ruth and La Delusa in Paris in 1851. His work La Delusa was bought by the Hermitage Museum in St Petersberg. The Museo Poldi in Milan has a bust by Romanelli of Bartolini, and another bust of Bartolini can be found in the church of the Santa Croce in Florence. In 1868, he was appointed Professor of Sculpture of the Academy of Fine Art of Florence. PROFESSOR PASQUALE ROMANELLI, ITALIAN (1812-1887): A MARBLE FIGURE OF AN ODALISQUE the standing maiden wearing a headdress with her hair arranged in a pair of plaits, her eyes downcast and looking to her left wrist as she adjusts her serpent style bracelet, her drapery falling to reveal her decolletage, an upturned urn of water at her feet, on a circular base signed 'P. Romanelli 1887 Florence',  105cm high The present marble can be compared with the marble Odalisque by Romanelli at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 30 September 2016, lot 19. Both feature the same headdress and drapery, intricately carved to replicate the design of the fabric, and in both depictions the sculptor pays meticulous attention to the hands of the girl, held at her chest as her drapery opens to reveal her flesh below. Professor Romanelli was a renowned sculptor who along with Cesare Lapini, Ferdindo Vichi and Pietro Bazzanti was responsible for Florence's reputation as the international centre for marble sculpture during the second half of the 19th century. This marble figure is typical of the work produced in Florence during this period, when Orientalism was highly fashionable and depictions of romanticised nude and semi-nude female figures from biblical, mythological and literature were popular.
