Signed in the lower left corner by Armando Romano (1953). The work is in excellent condition. Landscape has always played a central role in artistic exploration — not only as a setting or background, but also as a subject in its own right. The naturalistic depiction of landscapes has been a constant aspiration for painters. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation, contributing to the evolution of landscape art: beginning with a focus on spatial construction through Brunelleschian perspective in the early Renaissance; followed by atmospheric rendering in the 16th century; and culminating in the Impressionist emphasis on capturing every subtle vibration of light on objects. In particular, seascapes (“marina”) are a frequently recurring theme among artists. This is partly due to the inherent lyricism of views overlooking the sea or romantic images of small harbors, and partly because water surfaces allow painters to freely explore color and light through refined play of reflections and shimmering effects. The works of Armando Romano reveal a post-Impressionist maturity. The composition is compressed entirely in the foreground, with little attention to spatial depth. The artist’s goal is not to reproduce the visible subject, but to grasp its very essence and substance. To this end, he employs a rich, textured brushstroke which, despite the essentiality of representation, gives volume to objects, breaking them into different planes and capturing the vibrations of light and life on their surfaces. Thus, the sensory appearance is transcended in favor of a more complex artistic process, in which the artist’s gestural expression plays a key role. Romano’s work also shows a tendency to structure forms according to geometric principles reminiscent of Cézanne. Chromatically, the entire surface of the work is harmonized with a balanced palette of echoes and correspondences. Armando Romano was born in Naples in 1953. He is an artist closely tied to traditional genres such as landscape painting. His style reflects a strong connection to the School of Posillipo and is generally post-Impressionist with notable influence from the French painter Paul Cézanne.
