Die hier angebotene Tafel ist eine gut erhaltene und sehr schöne Arbeit aus dem Oeuvre des Haarlemer Malers Salomon Rombouts, dem Sohn des Gillis Rombouts (1630 – 1678), der sich insbesondere auf Waldlandschaften, Dorfszenen, Strand- und Winterlandschaften spezialisierte. Mit intensiven Erdfarben und dickem Pinselduktus führt Rombouts dem Betrachter eine, bis ins Detail feinst ausgeführte, bewaldete Landschaft vor Augen: Ein Bauer verrichtet, in seiner Linken einen Korb haltend, seine Arbeit am Rande des gewundenen Waldweges, der, durch die leichten Wolken am Himmel hindurch, von der Sonne beschienen wird. Hinter ihm und hinterfangen von hohen Bäumen, befindet sich eine Bauernhütte. Ein Flaneur mit Hund, als Repoussoirfigur fungierend, lenkt den Blick des Betrachters in der rechten Bildhälfte in die weite Ferne, wo eine Stadt, wohl Haarlem, zu erahnen ist. Die kompositorische Anlage des Werkes macht den Einfluss des Jakob van Ruisdael (1628/29 – 1682) spürbar, während die Gestaltung der Staffageelemente an Cornelis Gerritsz. Decker (um 1625 – 1678) und Roelof Jansz. van Vries (um 1631 – 1681) erinnern (vgl. Bernt, W.: Die Niederländischen Maler des 17. Jahrhunderts, Bd. II, o.S.). Somit fügt sich diese Darstellung, mit der für Rombouts typischen feinen Gestaltung des Himmels und der Vegetation, nicht nur überzeugend in das Oeuvre des Haarlemer Künstlers (vgl. RKD, Nr. 192780), sondern auch in die Tradition der vielgeschätzten und imposanten barocken Landschaftsmalerei der Niederlande des Goldenen Zeitalters.
