                  Est: $20,000 - $30,000

George Romney (British, 1734 - 1802) "Psyche in a Wood" Oil on Canvas. Provenance: Purchased at Sotheby's London 14 November 1990 Lot 61. The page from the original 1990 Sotheby's London catalog with this painting listed is included with the lot. Sight Size: 29 x 43 in. Overall Framed Size: 44 x 58 in. Literature: Gerhard Charles Rump, George Romney, 1974, Volume I, p.212, and Volume II p. 274. Romney became interested in the story of Cupid and Psyche shortly after his return from Italy in 1775. William Hayley, who met him in 1776 and became a close friend, records that early in their relationship they talked of 'producing a joint work on the adventures of Cupid and Psyche'. The story wasto be taken from "The Golden Ass" by Apuleius. Hayley described how Romney 'drew no less than eight elegant cartoons in black chalk'. Seven of these cartoons were given to the Liverpool Royal Institution in 1823 by the Artist's son, the Rev. John Romney, and were then presented to the Walker Art Gallery. Where they remain in 1948. Although Romney is thought to have gone on producing the cartoons until about 1783, this picture refers to the first of the set, "Psyche being blown by Zephyr" and was painted as early as 1776-7. In the finished painting the artist decided to portray just the figure of Psyche, omitting the head of Zephyr to the left, composing a new landscape behind and adding a scroll in the lower right corner. Romney alsways felt that history painting was more important than the portraits at which he worked all day; his son describes how these cartoons were produced in the evenings 'as a relaxation' and Hayley tells how painting by candlelight came to interest him. A drawing for Psyche on the reverse of a study of "The infant Shakespeare nursed by Tragedy and Comedy" was formerly in the collection of the Royal Institution, Truro, until sold in 1966.
